I know I’m a tad late to the Barbie convo…but this video really is a labor of love that couldn’t be rushed and undoubtedly the most heart and thought I’ve put into making a video 💕 7 different costume changes, 11 parts, and countless hours of research. I filmed and edited every second this video entirely by myself and I really hope you all love it as much as I enjoyed creating it for you!

I wish mattel could have kept Barbie pink and glam while also making her more inclusive. There's nothing wrong with being hyper feminine, that shouldn't take away from the fact Barbie was always meant to be a role model. She had over 200 different professions and all people could focus on was her appearance. Barbie just doesn't feel like barbie anymore.

I still don't get the people who think they need to shield children from "mature" topics like puberty or pregnancy. Especially the latter. Plenty of kids see their mothers be pregnant with their siblings, and the existance of older siblings proves that it is possible to explain pregnancy to children without explaining sex. When my mom was pregnant with my sister when I was three, all I knew was that there was a baby in her stomach, no one told me how it got there or anything, and I never cared. Also plenty of children see their older siblings grow up and go through puberty. They see their older sisters grow curves, and it's just normal, why do people treat it as something improper that must be hidden from children? There is nothing inherently mature about it.

Well said & agreed, it seems a tad odd to keep information about our human bodies that we're bound to be exposed to.
@TadanoCandy

I’m not sure it’s so much shielding than it’s not encouraging it. Children who see their pregnant moms might have a neutral opinion of pregnancy, but things like dolls that represent a pregnant woman might make them have a positive opinion as in “I’d like to be pregnant too”. I feel it’s a stretch, but it’s one interpretation, I think

I was totally saying something along those lines to a friend earlier this evening. It's just ridiculous

It was said the pregnancy baby thing wasn’t an issue it’s the fact they thought midge was 16 or a bit older but in a re adapted version of the doll has her husband and son in the background to show she’s a married women and is of an “appropriate age”

I’ll never get over how I didn’t get the pregnant midge doll as a kid, I wanted her so bad.. i've seen the barbie movie three times and to me, it's not really about Feminism... it's about humanity and what it means to be human. barbie & ken go through the same character arcs in different ways-- they're both learning who they are beyond what the world has decided they are and, as is normal, they're reacting in vastly different directions. it's ultimately about the human experience, not feminism.
@Clawdeena9
@Clawdeena9 Жыл бұрын

@KingOfGaymes
@KingOfGaymes Жыл бұрын
It’s still very much focused on the issues women face in society though and how hard being a woman can be, which is the feminist part. So yes it’s about the human experience, but it’s about feminism as well.
@keekermojo
@keekermojo Жыл бұрын
I'm gonna throw it out there and say that it's neither about human experience or feminism. It's about the experience of women and being female. The entire joke the whole movie was that Ken is the accessory to Barbie. Barbie World is completely the opposite of the real world yet exactly the same way reality is built around men with women often treated like the "accessory". Ken's story arc was never important but was needed to build Barbie's. The Ken's never faced any real conflict beyond the "oppression" of being Barbie's accessories (case-in-point: the entire movie). Simply existing as a woman, both the good and the struggles, doesn't automatically equate to feminism. There isn't really a lot of advocacy or gender equality- kind of the exact opposite, which is the again, the point of the whole movie. That's why I also think with the end of the movie, Barbie stayed in the real world because she realized that not only is she staying human, but became a "real" woman because she discovered how much she felt like a " " real " " woman even in a world built entirely around men vs Barbie World's dynamic. So the movie is just about women. A movie about women using men to make the point of how it feels and what it's like to be women.

@@keekermojo I absolutely love your take, I can totally see this perspective as well. All my body image issues came from society, not Barbie. Clean eating culture, patriarchy, workout culture, super models, etc. Barbies end up reflecting society back at us and instead of critiquing society, people critique Barbie. I think the movie tried to put in a lot of social commentary and touch on different issues with Barbie and being female, but there was so much crammed in, I can understand why people got confused. There's just too much about being human and society to put in any one single movie. The reason I stopped buying Barbies was that they didn't have good clothes anymore. What's the point of a fashion doll who has no fashion??? And so many of the playline dolls that have actual clothing items have the most random mismatched clothes. Barbie Fashionistas? That sack is a dress? I love the diversity, but the dolls are so cheaply made, they're not even worth spending money on. Barbie Extra? Fashion is definitely not her passion. :/ Thank god for the Barbie movie dolls. They have actual fashions! Hopefully Mattel learns the right lessons from this. But I doubt it. A most of the Barbie collabs are just basic pink colored things with the Barbie logo slapped on. No design or thought went into 80% of these products.

39:06 I will never quite understand this. I always grew up saying that I wanted “to grow up LOOKING like a Stepford housewife, but not BEING a Stepford housewife.” No one should be shamed for being or not being feminine. I can enjoy archery and makeup-we all can-because neither are in opposition of each other and neither are exclusive to a single gender. Be like Barbie by being who *you* want to be. A doll cannot tell you who or what to be; you tell the doll who and what it is. Children understand this. The adults who are projecting their insecurities onto the dolls are the ones who seem to forget this simple fact.

i'm glad my parents didn't fall for the tree change, or the anti feminism thing trying to change barbie's signature looks. I got to grow up with barbies before the change and stuck with those, I turned out fine with the hyper-feminism barbies. barbie's dream-house web series was amazing and my parents even loved it too, my dad would always laugh when walking past when i used to watch it. Even when i had barbies I would still be obsessed with franchises like fnaf! it doesn't affect other hobbies or things i like. the barbie blogs were pretty nice though, even if I didn't personally watch them, it was nice to hear positive things from it. Though I do think everyone missed her multi jobs, and feminism.

I Agree that the Barbie Movie doesn't need to address all of the Feminism problems in just one film, as a Barbie fan as long as I can remember Barbie doesn't say how strong she is but she shows it on her actions and still all feminine not that I didn't like the speech about that in the movie but I hope they present it in a not too much self aware lens (more subtle not in your face) . and I hope on the upcoming Barbie films it's more about the fun and magical story just like what she used to do on the animations. Live Action of Princess and the Pauper or Island Princess would be fantastic! ✨

Thank you, Thank you and Thank you for not just this video but for every video you make. I loved seeing all the dolls i use to have as well as seeing how Barbie went through it throughout the years. My daughters have been watching you for so very long. As i sat there and watched you talk about your love for dolls and also your walk through life. You became part of our family without even knowing it. What you bring to the table is more then reviews and info but a heart full of realness. All 4 of my daughters have collected dolls just like me. Although my collection got lost in a move and the rest in a fire. I was so greatful when my daughters found the same love in dolls and collecting. Now we all collect together and i love that i get to do something like my dad did with me. Although i collected not just dolls but comics and Starwars as well. I thank all that to my amazing dad. He taught me that dolls are just dolls to some people and to others so much more. Although he passed away when he was 55. I tried to raise my kids the same way. Its ok to love who you are and express yourself because not everyone is meant to fit in the same mold. Growing up there werent alot of dolls with different ethnicities. My dad would go out his way to go to different stores and small shops and even fleemarkets to find me dolls that were different and unique. Although i ended up liking Barbies i always wished there were dolls with different ethnicities. Being multiracial there wasnt anything that represented others or me. Yet today there is representation everywhere. Although my dad was still alive to see the Bratz come to life and loved buying my daughter's them. I wish he was still alive to see how much more there is now. He would of loved it, especially Monster High. I just want to say thank you for including everyone and for your beautiful outlook on dolls and the in's and out of the doll world and community. I think my dad would of loved your KZbin channel. Did we always play that Barbie was perfect? Probably not, playing is therapeutic, there's conflict, sadness, drama, problem-solving, and the list goes on. Basically, you will re-enact real life with your toys as a way to better deal with or process the world around you, so that movie Barbie didn't want to go back to always having the perfect day makes total sense, for me at least. I don't think it will mean that Barbie won't be glamorous any more, 'cause we all want and need those moments in our lives as well.

I have to say you did a wonderful job on this video! The history of the doll was so informative and, in some instances, made me laugh out loud. I did not see the Barbie movie, but I did see previews. The trailer I saw was with Barbie stepping out of heels for the first time and being told she could actually put her feet flat to the floor. I saw it as a comedy and would have enjoyed seeing it as a comedy. Through your video I saw where some may have taken offence to the dolls at this point or that point in time. I say it's a doll that changes with the times.

The Chanels in FX's Scream queens (2015-17) house had a very barbie glam aesthetic. And with Emma Robert's character was very Barbie in appearance and embodied 2010s mean girl shallow and superficiality to a scary level.
