I did that in my 2nd or 3rd attempt of my will. Not because I didn't want to play it anymore out of boredom, but out of sadness from what flowey says at the end of the true pacifist. The only thing that can end a happy ending and put all of them back there is YOU. This game is like none other. You don't see sans as skeleton data, but as a skeleton friend. Also flowey couldn't feel emotions. The genocide was a desperate attempt at regaining those. Let's be real here. You would go insane if you were in his condition too. Now I proudly say I didn't play the genocide ending, so I don't know chara's personality, but the true pacifist after genocide makes you feel you made the difference. IN A BAD WAY. These three characters are the key to you being bonded emotionally to the game. Like the game has its own emotional moments but it's these three that makes you feel like everyone is special to you. Also few people know about this but the hacker ending is a way to handle you trying to outplay the system, stopping you on your tracks. I found no evidence but it might appear if you try to delete the genocide data.

@Airock the Great If something had to be entirely new to be interesting we wouldn't be interested in storytelling since ancient greece. Storytelling isn't about creating something new ex nihilo, but building a new and personnal take on pre-existing concept with the pieces laid out by previous work. Undertale isn't less interesting because of deadpool and bugs bunny already existing, it's actually made more interesting by those thing existing and laying the fundation for such a work. Just like Molière and Shakespeare did the same for deadpool and bugs bunny with character that had similar dynamics. The fact that undertale didn't resonate with you doesn't make it overrated. And you can't deny that a lot of what it does is subtle and well crafted despite the many flaws of the game. You can replay the game several time and still find new and interesting things and still seeing things with a new perspective. Nobody is saying that undertale is the only great work with 4th wall breaking, multiple metanarrative layers, symbolism, a use of it's medium specifics aimed towards strengthening storytelling, overall enjoyable, with a great message and full of great intent and passion. No but saying undertale has these thing doesn't lessen any other work... but it indeed does make undertale great for a lot of people. If it didn't work out for you that's ok, but you don't need to put people down simply because you didn't get the same enjoyment out of a game than they did.

While that is true, he is literally constructed to kill the main character; A) When you fight him, you can one-shot kill everything, so it doesn't matter how many hp he has. Only having one health is just as weak as one thousand at that point, so his ability to dodge is the most overpowered ability you could have fighting a human with 19 LOVE. B) When you fight him, you have an next to infinite defense, so any attack would do 1 damage anyways. Therefore, he could do 999 damage and it wouldn't make a difference. The only way to overwhelm this is hitting several times very quickly, and by dispensing of invisibility frames, he does this exactly.

Sans doesn't remember resets, he only knows about them. The reason why he seems to be able to remember other saves is because he's really observant. He's able to infer a lot of things. He guesses that you've died based on your facial expressions. Also, literally no one except you and Chara remember the genocide timeline because it was literally *erased*.

I also didn't have the heart to play again after completing the pacifist route. At some point I considered resetting to play pacifist again because I had missed a couple things and I'd been feeling nostalgic but, turns out that even if you do a "True Reset" after the pacifist ending Sans has proof that you got them the pacifist ending. In Sans' lab the photo album has a third photo in it and it's the photo you take with everyone when you get the true pacifist ending, so it feels like he knows you got them to the surface but decided to bring them back because you weren't satisfied meaning even if you break the barrier you'll never let them actually leave the underground... so, yeah I decided not to reset.

Oh yeah. Part the reason why sans can't kill and won't kill you in pacifist route cause his power is karma. Which is the posion which he inflicts Everytime he damages you based on how many lv and xp you have gained. Soo basically his attacks actually do 1 damage but the karma makes it hurt like a bullet train

I loved Undertale. It was a genuinely novel experience, crafted so well, with such attention to detail and emotional intelligence that I was floored multiple times through my first playthrough. I'll never forget fighting Toriel the first time. I couldn't shake my traditional RPG mindset, and though I'd spared every monster up to that point, I'd stockpiled Spider bake sale goods, just in case. I kept using them during the Toriel fight, to last a little longer, plead one more turn before she'd accidentally kill me, this happened over and over and over, each time seeing the split second of shock on her face and knowing she hadn't meant to kill me. Finally I thought, "hey.. maybe I need to reduce her to a small amount of HP and THEN she'll listen.", I accidentally killed her.. reset, and the next fight I used no items, and just let it happen, and she started MISSING ME on purpose! I was shocked. Then, after the tearful farewell, Flowey KNEW what I'd done, accidentally or not, I was a murderer.. This game was-- is-- brilliant and I will always Love it.

You know. It's funny you mention the importance of music within the game. I had never considered the idea of that single moment of silence having such a powerful meaning, but it makes a lot of sense. I also feel the music has a lot more of a meaning in and of itself. Particularly with the track "It's Raining Somewhere Else." I believe that the name is a reference to the genocide route. In the moments when this track plays, Sans is confronting you, explaining his promise and how he was able to keep it. In the pacifist route, it isn't "raining" there. Things are okay. People are happy, things have worked out so far, even if the journey isn't over yet. But it IS "raining" somewhere else. That place is the genocide route. People are suffering, a danger is sweeping across the underground as it falls silent with dust floating through the air. I may be looking into it too much, but I think this track and its name has a major significance to the idea of alternate timelines within the story. And that's only one example of something so insignificant as the name of a music track having all of the significance to the story considering how names of other tracks also have a lot of deeper meaning, or at least they appear to.

During the sans fight, he states that timelines were “jumping back and forth” and “looping into each other” and that “all of a sudden, everything ends.” My theory on this is that sans cannot see the resets. He can’t remember the saves, the loads or anything. Let’s say the universe of undertale is your computer. There are millions of universes, but none are linked. The timeline, however, is the current game you have loaded. Before the time undertale takes place, sans worked with gaster or used the machine in the lab behind his house and foresaw the changes in the timeline. This saved it in his memory from before the resets, allowing him to see the resets. The time and date of the universe at which the timeline occurs. He memorised the time and dates for the first 10 or so deaths of the player but can’t remember past that, hence he stops counting. He doesn’t remember he killed you, but he remembers seeing himself kill you and the load of the timeline, where it “loops back on itself.” He remembers it all, but not from his perspective, but from the perspective of the machine that he used to see the timelines. He “gave up trying to go back” when he gave up trying to prevent the tangled mess of the timelines that he foresaw and broke the machine, which is why it is broken at the time of the game. This is supported by his next line: “not the surface, I mean. That doesn’t appeal to me anymore.” Where he realised that when the player inevitably beats him and the king, they will destroy the timelines once and for all. Until they come back, which he doesn’t know about. When he kills you after you’ve spared him, the text that you hear is probably a dream, or nightmare, rather, that is shown just after death. This is supported by real life, where for a few minutes after death, you still have brain activity, similar to a dream. In game, when you sleep at Toriel’s house after she goes downstairs, you hear asgore tell you to get up. This is a dream, mirrored by the classic game over screens. You don’t see this in the snowed inn because you don’t sleep due to the snoring rabbits in the room next door. Now back to sans. In his dialogue, he’s not talking to frisk (or rather, chara). He’s talking to the player. He knows that something larger is causing this. He knows that he can’t convince the kid to stop, but the player. He says “you’re responsible for this, huh” meaning that the player downloading the game was what ended flowey’s torture and genocide and started frisk’s. The player was the catalyst that made frisk chose to fall into the underground and confront flowey. Start the game. It was the player. Sans also says in his last words hoping to make the player give up that “you don’t do it for good, or bad, you do it because you can, and because you can, you *have to.* ” stating that because the player knows that this game is just code and fiction, they can do whatever they want. They can play however they want and because they can, they “have” to find out what would happen. So they do. He only wants to kill the player in pacifist because he saw the timelines and knows something is going to go down. Long story short, sans doesn’t remember the loads, saves and resets. He remembers the things he saw, the timelines looping and jumping and changing due to the player dying and he hates them for it. The world ends. Sans was right. But then it comes back. Everything happens again, but its always slightly different. Everything is an anomaly. And sans knows that whatever he does it will always disappear. I promised myself I would do a pacifist run before I quit undertale. The difference is, how long will that last. Technology breaks down. In the final timeline, sans was right. “Then, everything just... ends.” It was my fault. It was the player’s fault. It was *our* fault.

sans doesn't actually remember the resets. the reason he can count your deaths is because he's excellent at reading people and he's extrapolating on your frustration to get a stab at how many times you've done this. the reason he stops counting at 12 is because the slight variations in your fury and determination become too slight for him to read, so he figures the answer is "more than 12" and can't get any more specific. which is why he asks you to count for him, starting at 12. the actual source of sans's power is knowledge. he perfectly understands the rules of his world, how a turn works, what a frame is, how many attacks one can launch per second, and he uses that to do things like: take the first turn when only you can do that, apply a poison effect in a game without status ailments, dodge attacks without a dodge mechanic, take two turns at once and extend his turn by warping you between frames. sans is overpowered because he breaks the rules established by every other character. the only other characters to do that are asriel: god of hyperdeath (who takes your ability to use the menu away) and photoshop flowey (who just breaks all the things), and both of those entities are gods and the same person.

SniperYoshi there is no dodge mechanic. undertale is a game and knows it. there is no code that allows any monster to dodge attacks, there is no dodge roll, no quickstep, nothing. no monster has the ability to dodge your attack because their code doesn't allow it. except sans. and no, asgore doesn't have a dodge mechanic either, no matter what the story says. asgore is incapable of dodging you in battle. it has nothing to do with frisk's speed and everything to do with the anomaly's presence. when i say status aliments, i mean "poison, blind, silenced, burn, frozen, shocked, armour broken" etc. the game doesn't have any of those debuffs that affect your stats, except for being faster or slower. i-frames are not a status aliment and removing them doesn't count because only sans is able to do it. not even asriel does that. and no, the soul changes are not a status ailment, they're closer to a stance change. nobody knows how karmic retribution works, don't quote hypothesis at me please. sans does his turn 23 and turn 24 in a single move, his gauntlet and then his special attack. sans dodges in a game where enemies can't dodge. sans takes the first turn when only the player gets the first turn. the battle music playing is not sans's, sans has a battle theme and it isn't megalovania. sans's attacks don't grant you i-frames, every other attack in the game, even hyper-goner, does. what do you mean, "sans isn't breaking the rules"? sans breaks every rule and keeps doing it, up to the point where even YOU get to break some rules by moving the battle box, attacking when it's not your turn and getting two attacks out instead of one, none of which are skills the player has at any other point in the game. you really don't want to argue undertale with me, i may have an obsession.

SniperYoshi and the part you're missing is that the code of the characters is part of them. undertale is a meta game, the characters aren't only what the story says. asgore's dodging falls under an informed attribute, because he is incapable of dodging in-game, and guess what? there's multiple stories reasons why asgore doesn't dodge in his battle too, not just mechanical ones. it's karmic. the removed text boxes calls the ability "karmic retribution", those same text boxes you're getting the "doomed to death of KARMA" information from. do you know what a hypothesis is? a hypothesis is an idea you present without evidence but that you hope to find evidence for. "sans's power increases with your bad deeds" is a hypothesis, because there isn't enough evidence to prove it. if you could prove it, it would then be a theory. it's not vague. sans takes the first turn for a thematic reason and for a shock reason. the monster gets the second turn, and the player isn't expecting it. sans breaks the rules there to confuse and anger you, it's the same reason that he will cut his speech short exactly once and suckerpunch you with the opening move. he's trying to break your will, make you rage quit and reset. "how the fight is stationed" isn't a sentence that makes sense, and whether it makes sense thematically or not, he's still broken the rule, a rule that literal god asriel didn't break, and he ate the timeline. right. the box is moveable. but not by the player. only in that specific moment can the player move the box, which breaks the established rules. if i made a story where the rule was that humans can only pick up boxes and elves can only pick up barrels, a human picking up a barrel breaks the rules. it doesn't matter how many times they do it, all that matters is that the rule was broken. monsters can move the box, humans can't. and then the human breaks the rule.

You know, everyone talks about sans' omniscience and ability to see into multiple timelines, but honestly I don't think that's the case. I think he knows things. Things he otherwise shouldn't. He knows about the resets, and the player's choices, and all of that. But I don't think he knows everything. I don't think he can see everything. As I kept fighting (and losing to) sans, something struck me as odd. At first, he kept track of how many times he's killed you. This would be a great piece of evidence for the whole all knowing sans thing, if not for the fact that he eventually stops. Eventually, he doesn't say anything but "let's just get to the point." I wondered why he'd stop rubbing our deaths in our faces. It would be a great way to break our wills. If we knew exactly how many times we died, we would be much more likely to give up. But he doesn't say it. Why? Because he doesn't know. The first 5 or so times, he tells us. "That looks like the face of someone who's died (insert number here) times." He knows by the look on our face, and the growing expression of frustration and anger. He's smart, and he knows way more than he should. But I really don't think he knows everything. He hates you because he knows you have the reset power, but he doesn't want to hate you. It's not like you wanted that power in the first place. You just happened to get it. He knows that. He wants to be your friend, but as long as you have that power, as long as you're underground, he can't be sure if you're abusing it or not. He can't be sure if you've killed people or not. But he's gone right back to the friendly act once the barrier gets destroyed. Because he knows you've decided to do good. In this world anyway. He does go back underground in the true ending, but I think that's more because he's afraid. Afraid of the future. He's been stuck in this loop for way too long. He knows he has. He's stuck, and he hates that he's stuck, but at the same time he's afraid to not be stuck. So he goes back, and waits. And braces himself. After that, it depends on the player. Either his story starts over, or he gets a happy ending. I don't know, that's just my opinion. It frustrates me that people just assume he's omniscient without really thinking about it. I think he's aware. Of a lot. Just not all knowing. But that's my opinion.

Personally, I wouldn't be able to keep track of how many times the fight went down without a piece of paper, even if I could remember them all happening. But then again, I also don't think I'd really want to know precisely how many times I'd killed somebody I had once called 'friend'. Definitely see where you're coming from, though.

I think there are good arguments for either side. There's obviously the in-game dialog where he claims that he won't be able to remember, but then there's the point that Sans might be an unreliable narrator and could be lying to us. After all, I doubt he would want a crazy murderer knowing that he knows. But whatever, it's all good stuff.

Sans admit in several points of several run that he cant remember, so he oficcially cant. Period. Other than that, its just dumb conspiracy. "what is papyrus is truly omnipotent and can free everyone from the underground, but he choose not to do it because he enjoys seeing other people suffer?" My previous argument that Sans could be lying to the player for his own safety sort of discredits his in-game admission, but yes; the game portrays Sans as somebody who figured things out by context clues. And that could very well be the case, he might not be lying. Still, if people want to come up with alternate portrayals or theories for the fandom, I see no problem with that. Though that Papyrus theory you randomly added makes pretty much no sense, I agree with you there. Papyrus never acts sinister or mean, so there is no ground for that to stand on. All I'm saying is that there is canonical proof that Sans is sneaky and secretive, so it's not entirely impossible that he misdirects the player into believing he does not remember. If you want to believe that Sans can't, that's your prerogative and what he himself says is true. And if other's want to arrange those pieces the game gave us differently, that's up to them. That's the whole beauty of fandom, taking a source and running with it.

Not entirely true, this analysis. Sans does not know about other timelines, he just knows that someone, like Flowey, can reset the game, or as he calls it, "time travel". He knows about it, so he studies the player's reaction to come to a conclusion whether they used their ability or not. He does not know exactly what the player did in an alternate timeline, but the player's reaction is sometimes enough for him to deduce what they did...

This actually has a lot of inaccuracies. The biggest being that sans does not hate you because of what you've done in other timelines. When you reset, everyones memory is reset, sans included. He simply knows that you can save and load and keeps track of that. The closest that sans gets to actually knowing about another timeline is when he attempts to spare you and says that you two may have possibly been friends in another timeline to get you to surrender. The reason why sans lets you know he could have killed you at the end of the pacifist route isnt because he hates you but because he has a job to do and if he didn't believe in toriel and her promise he would have done it.

Crippling Depression He mistakes Frisk for Flowey, as Flowey had the most determination in the Underground before Frisk fell and started fucking around with it after he did his own pacifist run. Not to mention, how could Frisk cause those anomalies in the first place? The aforementioned reports are a bit into the past (evidenced by the broken machine, badge, and photograph highly likely to be from said research), so how would Frisk be in the Underground early enough to cause them and somehow fall into the Underground after Sans falls into his nihilistic depression?

I think the degree to which Sans knows your actions in past timelines is debatable. He appears to know in general terms that you can save and reset, and that you're willing to kill, but the way that he talks (especially in his pre-fight quotes) seems to indicate that he doesn't directly experience or have any memories from past timelines. For example, in the ninth battle, he gets confused as to how many times you've died: -hmm. that expression... -that's the expression of someone who's died seven times in a row. -nope, wait, that's definitely nine, sorry. -or was it ten? and after the eleventh fight, he stops counting altogether.: -hmm. that expression... -that's the expression of someone who's died eleven times in a row. -well, give or take. -there's nuance to this stuff. -don't think i'll be able to count very well from here. -count for me, ok? -we'll start from 12. Also, the way he talks about the different timelines during his battle seems to indicate that he did not directly experience them: -*our reports showed* a massive anomaly in the timespace continuum. timelines jumping left and right, stopping and starting... -until suddenly, everything ends. -heh heh heh... that's your fault isn't it? So at least when I was playing the game, I felt that Sans had some way of knowing these things, but had not directly experienced them.

I also don't think he can really remember them. He knows they exist, and he apperantly can read your (-_-) expression well enough to infer how many times he killed you, but he doesn't have any determination. As for his powers, I think that he can manipulate the game files - Allowing him to edit his location to 'teleport', or alternatively unlock abilities that he should not have as the 'easiest enemy'.

Marik Zilberman, I doubt Sans can manipulate the game files. If he could he could just force you to reset, but he doesn't. Instead, I think that he 'teleports' by being in multiple locations at once. Sort of. Let me explain. When making a game in GameMaker Studio 2 (which was used to make Undertale) you put multiple areas inside of different 'rooms.' I was going to explain how rooms work, but the wiki explains what I needed to say about them perfectly. It says _"Each room in your game is independent of each other. Therefore, when you place instances of an object into a room, those instances will only exist in that room."_ (You can read the entire page here: gamemaker.wikidot.com/room) This means that if a character in the game is going to be in more than one room, you have to make a new instance of that character for each room that they exist in. Sans is in more than one room, so there are of course one of him in every single room that he appears in. 99% of the time when he 'teleports' it's in a transition from one room to another. Nothing that Sans does in one room will influence where he appears in the next room, and Sans knows this, so he plays off of that to make a joke. There is one room in Snowdin that contains two different instances of him, and then during his final attack he appears multiple times as the player falls towards the right, but these two times are the only exceptions that I can think of, and to me they seem to simply be slight alterations of the 'teleporting' joke.

bro that doesn't explain how he can have abilities he shouldn't have in the genocide fight though. Him being able to manipulate game files explains teleportation (by changing the location he's in in the files), and also explains his abilities in genocide (getsfirstturn=1, candodge=1). Granted, it's probably not all powerful, as he would need determination to mess with the saving function. But when it comes to lower priority functions, he has access. Occam's razor= the hypothesis that requires you to make the least amount of assumptions, is the most likely to be correct

With the way rooms are set up, while he can change the coordinates inside of each room that he's in, he can't put himself into a different room. getsfirstturn and candodge aren't values in the code, and there are no values in the code that dictate who gets the first turn and stuff like that, so no, it wouldn't really make sense for him to be able to manipulate those.
