The ultimate focus here on business misses the actual usefulness of AI: to use computational models to run processes including research in multiple domains. It's not just about the Benjamins, although US based tech giants certainly have that objective. An interesting aspect of AI development in China is that, ultimately, the state drives in a direction that disperses rather than concentrates technology use and the benefits. China puts limits on the accumulation of too much power in companies and that often proves wise. If Huawei, Alibaba et al had the power US observers tend to assume, DeepSeek would have been stillborn. Lastly, because DeepSeek R1 is open source, it can be run anywhere and is already running on servers in the USA not China, and obviously personal systems (albeit with lower computing power). I'm enjoying the show, including the exploding heads at the Senate Select Committee. Hi Paul, your X follower URN here.

DeepSeek is not developed by a tech company. DeepSeek is funded and developed by a hedge fund CEO with a few college researchers and students. it was never meant to be a money making project, that's why he was generous enough to give it away to AI user worldwide. for every free download. big tech will lose money they think belongs to them. LOL that it burst the AI bubble makes it even better. Bravo.

Jenny Xiao is incorrect with Nvidia. There will be more demand for GPUs, true, but it won't be for the high priced, high performance GPUs of Nvidia. There will be more demand for more cost efficient units like Huawei, AMD and other. Eventually, there might even be generic GPUs from China making its way to the Global South.

The accusation of theft by OpenAI is laughable. This is a company that developed a model by vacuuming-up the internet. Sam Altman is being ridiculed for his self-serving and disingenuous comments on social media. In contrast, Meta, which has also open-sourced their model is congratulating DeepSeek. Let's use a grain of salt and understand OpenAI got pawned and Sam lost some $$$.

Love Asia Society and a lot of the new formats and new contents, including new shows like this one. One word of caution is that this particular video, while informative, sounds a bit leaning too much towards China. Some balance in the analysis would be good. For instance, it is without a doubt that DeepSeek is replicating OpenAI's capabilities and even user interface. So that begs the question if DS is just a good copycat or does it truly possess innovative abilities. Also, how does it make money? what is its purpose if it is not used for commercial gains?

It's a copycat because open AI said so. You believe anything these people tell you without using the minimum critical thinking. If it's is a copy how come it's way better and how come it's using way less powerful chips and way less of them too, Dum dum

DeepSeek's ultimate goal is to achieve AGI . AGI has the potential to cure incurable diseases and extend human lifespan. DeepSeek's innovation lies in its energy-efficient algorithms, and it is made accessible for free to everyone. Currently, DeepSeek generates revenue through API calls by engineers worldwide. However, DeepSeek has publicly stated that this stage is not about making money but about exploring and advancing technological innovation.
