Getting a chain to fit on a single speed setup without pensioner requires some time and patience, especially when your bike doesn’t have horizontal dropouts, you probably would need a half link to fine tune the chain tension.
Today we’ll take a look on the half link installation, on the Singlespeed coaster bike with vertical dropouts.
Full-link chains are traditional bike chains pairing a sequence of outer and inner links. (A full-link contains an inner and outer link)
The half link connects to the outer and inner links of the chain, it allows you to add or remove a single link, therefore, it reduces the amount of variation from 1” to 1/2”.
There are different sizes of half links, the 1/8” half links are designed for single speed chains.
If you are using a 5 to 8 speed chain for you setup, get the 3/32” half link.
Chains width:
Single speed chains have inner width of 1/8″ (3.175 mm).
Multi speed chains, from 5 to 8 have inner width of 3/32″ (2.38 mm).
Multi speed chains from 9 to 12 speeds have inner width of 11/128″ (2.18 mm).
Connect the half-link to the inner link and then the outer link.
Enjoy your single speed conversion.
