For many beginners to kitesurfing, water starting and riding those first few meters feels like an almost unattainable goal.
The amount of variables you are trying to put together in a split second with perfect precision makes this one of the hardest physical activities we ever learn.
Fear not in this podcast we break down the most common errors of waterstarting and give you a solution for each, and this isn’t the normal “Just point the board downwind” advice.
Amongst other stuff we cover:
* Why the normal advice for learning to waterstart is actually counterproductive in most cases
* How what you do with the kite is more important than anything else
* Solutions to the most common errors
* Why the water start is much more than just one simple stroke

I can easily relate to every mistake explained... This is the most comprehensive water start explanation on KZbin by far. You know exactly where most of us newbies need some extra pointers. Great job and thanks!

Perfectly explained. I don't know why but I've been watching lots of videos of waterstarts and you're the only one that perfectly cleared the picture. Explaining that water start consist basically of the first 3 power strokes and how to do each one is something that no one has ever explained to me. And that makes the rest clear. Thank you mate. Can't believe how the exact same things are happening to me during the waterstart. You are awesome. thanks for this video. It almost seems to me now that with the correct kite-flying, the problem is less on the way the board is pointed.

Glad it helps mate, yup if you get the kite right, the board should (mostly) sort itself out as the kite naturally pulls you out in the right direction.

Hi mate, the best video I've found on this is this one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap_JqmBre796gKc If you look at 1:33 you'll see exactly what she does with the bar...pushing it out as the kite passes over and then pulling in (slightly) to ride...that's exactly what I'd recommend!

Honestly amazing podcasts/videos!! Quick question: i’ve been taught to do the waterstart in a fairly different manner: in case of sailing left; when laying in the water, kite at 1 -> pull the bar in -> steeply steer kite to 11 and release the bar -> once you are coming out of the water a little, pull the bar a little (so basically sending the kite horizontally through the powerzone instead of the regular method) My question is: i’ve been really getting the hang of the waterstart through this technique. However, online i almost don’t see any videos covering this method. Hence, im a bit worried that this might not be the best technique. Can you comment on this? What’s your view on this technique?
@kitingholger9826

Great technical explanation! I think it is important to mention that it's best to get out of the water with the kite going up because this gives you the lift to get up . Many beginners are pulled over the board while getting up with the kite on the way down with too much power when reaching 10h position or below, in many cases crashig kite afterwards on the water....I also started like this until I met a kite teacher who told me to get zp on the board after I steered the kite up again...in any case will come to see you guys in Tarifa one day...great video!😎🌞🏄🏻

For sure that works and if you're really struggling with the downstroke it can help to get you up out out of the water. The downside of practicing like that is that it tends to leave you a lot more uncontrolled for the initial few metres of actual riding as the pull is now coming from above you which is a lot more difficult to control and turn into forward motion. But hey whatever works for you is fine by me!! See you on the beach.

Tantrum Kitesurf Thanks for your feedback. Agree: both works. What I mean is to get up when the kite at least got the stearing impulse back upwards - this helps as it avoids that the kite goes further down to the powerzone after getting up - the kite should of course not go just up, but up and forward towards the direction of ride...Overall I think we are on the same page...;-)) And your videos are really great! See you on the beach!

Really helpful, I am just now getting up and riding and wondered what your thoughts are on how trimmed your kite should be on the first dive? Should I have the kite trimmed so that my bar is fully pulled on or out or halfway for getting up on my feet? So far I have it fully pulled in a TBH am not aware of how much it is in or out for the next three dives as that is as far as I have got.
@TantrumX
@TantrumX 7 жыл бұрын
Haha...great question! The true answer is...as trimmed in as it needs to be...which isn't very helpful...the key is you must be able to send the kite back up to 11 or 1 o'clock for the second stroke quickly, the mistake most people make at this point is they pull the bar all the way in and hold it there with the idea of "well I'm up now if I just keep doing what i'm doing all will be good!" The truth is you need to get that second stroke in fast and often having the bar all the way in prevents this as the kite kite stalls at the bottom of the window. SO while yo can bring it in as much as you like while actually coming out of the water, once you are up you need to squeeze it out to prevent the kite from stalling and allow you to steer back up for the second stroke.
