The DEFINITIVE Mario Kart Double Dash Course Rankings

As someone who grew up on the Nintendo Gamecube, this is a video I've been wanting to make for a while! From Yoshi Circuit to Daisy Cruiser, Mario Kart: Double Dash has some of the strongest courses in the entire Mario Kart series, but how do its races stack up against each other? I hope you enjoy my attempt to answer that question!

The interesting thing about Baby Park is that it relies heavily on the Boswer Shell to make it chaotic. Other renditions of Baby Park just don't hit like Double Dash's Baby Park does. It's an S tier Double Dash track but a B tier at best in other games

What is also important is how forgiving it is to get hit in DD where you keep most of your momentum, which is crucial to a map like that.

Wow this is a great video GameGuy! I especially liked your numbers expert; I think he did a very handsome job. I was so hype to hear what number came after 9 when counting down from 16! I hope we get to see him again for some more counting. One thing, I was shocked to see Toad Circuit wasn't on your top 16. Just because it's not in double dash doesn't mean you can't rank it first in this video.

The Pipe Shortcut in Mushroom Bridge is brilliant to use less so for actually taking a shortcut, because lets be honest its not a shortcut, and more for getting the guaranteed double item box. I play this game with my Uncle every year, whenever we get this track we instantly go down that path, hope we fall down to last place, get the powerful items and basically fight back up to first place. Also its where the Bomb Cars appear from (I assume to replace any that get blown up)

I played MKDD so much I could beat the 50CC with my feet just for fun. My go to combo was Bowser Jr + Diddy Kong + the train kart. It was super light, but small and the specials were awesome!! I'd pay $60 for a MKDD remaster. Heck, I paid $60 for a Sunshine remaster and got two other games as a bonus.

That is an impressive feat, you are a man who is clearly dedicated to the art of Double Dash. And that is a deadly combo - great acceleration and handling combined with those heavy hitting specials = recipe for a blowout I would buy a Double Dash remaster in a heartbeat - but since they probably wouldn’t remaster a Mario kart game before just remastering it’s courses, I’d be equally as excited if they did a sort of Double Dash 2

@@GameGuy53 Too dedicated some would say. But GameCube games were ludicrously expensive in Brazil, so I had Sunshine, Double Dash, Wind Waker and Mario Party 4 for my first 3 years with the console. So I got to play them a bit too much. Double Dash 2 would be amazing!! More tracks, more characters with unique power ups, more everything + online... Ahh... To dream... :)

Excellent ranking, GameGuy53. The video was beautifully edited, very funny, and the tracks were very thoughtfully ranked. The ranking had clear points, was agreeable, and felt based on a more objective perspective on what each track added to the game itself. I would generally agree that this video warrants its title as being called a definitive ranking for these tracks. Mario Kart Double Dash!! may only have 16 tracks, but every track feels like it brought something different and unique to the selection to justify its inclusion. It really feels like there is at least one track here that satisfies everyone’s diverse array of personal tastes. I wouldn’t swap out a single track for another. I’ve been working on a really thorough and critical analysis of the entire Mario Kart series, and I think it would be a fun activity to add some of my own commentary about the courses in this ranking. I would mainly respond to questions asked in the video itself and offer some further validation and critiques for certain tracks and their overall ranking. I haven’t made a commentary video for another channel’s content before, but this video was really well done and genuinely stood out to me to make me really interested in potentially doing that. I’d love for your permission for me to consider making that sort of direct response video. It sounds like a pretty fun project for me to be able to add to the conversation. - Noah

Cool video dude. I would have probably ranked one or two of those a little differently, but you have a good list nonetheless. Even though you have Daisy Cruiser ranked at 9th, it’s the one course I’m really hoping comes back in the MK8D Booster Course Pass DLC. Daisy Cruiser is my all time favorite Mario Kart track!

I don’t necessarily agree with the ranking. I’d have Dry Dry Desert (although I don’t like the remake) and Mushroom City much higher. And Waluigi Stadium and Baby Park much lower. The video was really well produced and well justified though, you’ve earned a new sub!

Great video! I know you did a ranking of all the cups based off of your system but do you have a favorite cup to race in general? Also I really wish they'd bring back the all cup tour mode I know with 96 tracks it would be way too much in the modern iteration but it would be cool to just pick like your top five cups and then just race all of them

I feel like Double Dash has such a distinct style and feel that I almost don't even care what cup I'm playing, it's always fun - but I do think generally the Star Cup would still be my pick. Also, I totally agree with bringing back all-cup tour - I say give us the full 96-course gauntlet. People do it anyway, just give it to us as a menu option! Glad you enjoyed the video, Nemo.

I’m really glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the kind words! And honestly this entire ranking list was one big toss up for me because I love this game so much. I bet I could rearrange the whole list and come up with good reasons for why the races should all be ranked higher. It really did all just come down to my gut feeling when I play each race! I also realize that baby park is a rather divisive track, I don’t really love some of its remakes either, but I do like the original a lot. My friends and I used to play baby park over and over until someone won 7 times. So there’s a bit of nostalgia there for me!

I will say that I like every race in this game enough where I probably could have ranked them in any order and made arguments for their placements - this might be the only Mario Kart that doesn’t have any tracks that I dislike!

Haha yeah I did think if that - but it looks more like a pseudo-3D style to me. The character sprites are still 2D, but the environments help create more of a 3D illusion. Put it next to Mario 64 though and I don’t think it’s quite what they considered 3D at the time. DD is where they definitely went all in! Maybe I’m wrong but I think if it as like halfway there.

Mostly agree, but cannot agree with where you put boswers castle. That is one of the best bowser castles/tracks made! Its up there with wii and 8, sure the colour scheme is a bit dull, but track itself is very good

@GameGuy53 In 8 Deluxe, Baby Park _really_ looks like a baby park. *Awesome.* The DS version is the most nostalgic for me, as that Mario Kart is not only the first I’ve ever played, but also the first _video_ game I’ve ever played. The music is also nostalgic. Luigi Circuit was in Mario Kart DS (how could you *NOT* mention that, dude?!), and the DS rendition of the music for that course I enjoy WAY more than the original GameCube music. I know a s***ton about Mario Kart and about Mario in general.

I feel that Double Dash has the strongest base roster of tracks in the series. It's hard to pick one that doesn't feel great because they all pretty much do. I'd choose Dry Dry Desert for it being the most generic.

I agree this whole lineup is very strong - there’s also something special about it being the last Mario Kart to only have the 16 original tracks. The 16 Wii Retro tracks draw some attention away from how strong the 16 Wii originals are in that game.

I can definitely understand your peach beach and Waluigi/Wario opinions. Peach Beach is a really simple straight forward track, and Wario Colosseum is quite a spectacle for a track. Maybe I’m subconsciously favorable towards Waluigi because that’s in Wii too so I’ve spent more time with it overall - Wario Colosseum definitely deserves a remake! Also I agree in terms of Toads Turnpike, I played that one the other day and quickly realized I was wrong on that here lol. However as brutal as Moonview Highway tends to be, I am a proud enjoyer of it! I think I just like pain.

That’s fair. If I’m being honest though, none of the Double Dash!! tracks are really bad. I just find Peach Beach to be the least interesting of the bunch. At least we can agree though that Wario Colosseum is far more deserving of a remake. Also Moonview Highway isn’t bad. I just always found Mushroom City far more fun to drive through.

That title is so wrong lmao. 8 Deluxe is the true definite MK. Or depending on what kind of person you are. Tour can be classed as a ‘definitive’ Mario Kart game. Double Dash though? It was good for its time, but it’s not that good anymore

Definitive is in reference to my personal rankings of the Double Dash races, not Double Dash as a game! I definitely agree that 8 Deluxe is the “definitive” Mario Kart right now! Maybe I should put quotes around the title of the game so people don’t read it that way.

@@GameGuy53 It’s okay, Yes I love Dino Dino Jungle very much however the reveal of DK Mountain and the quality and attention to Detail they’ve done for it makes me believe Dino Dino Jungle probably won’t make the cut for MK8 which does deeply saddens me. As long as we get Daisy Cruiser’s Gorgeous remake it should be okay. I’m really hoping Riverside Park comes to MK8 as well. The video was really good and well put together. You should do the other Mario Kart’s sometime and rank them!🥰💖

​@@GameGuy53 Probably either your number 16, Mario Circuit, or Dry Dry desert. Either one of these tracks make it on my last place, I think both of the tracks aren't the best... I consider Mario Circuit a filler track and Dry Dry Desert the must-have, usually boring desert track of most Mario Karts. (The exception here is Kalimari Desert though). Also yeah, I'm a sucker for ice levels too, I'm probably the only one who kinda likes Sherbet Land (N64), Frappe Snowland, and Vanilla Lake, (and I've even played through them multiple times) but honestly GCN Sherbet Land (Along with DK Pass) are the only ice tracks that are extremely unappealing to me, not visually-wise, but music-wise (mainly) and gameplay-wise Important note: I'm talking about the original versions of these tracks, their remade versions are getting better and better over the years.
