One thing I love about Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64, is that the MK8 DX remake has a flying train with Toads throwing coins, and the conductor being Iwata’s mii. Honestly… it brings tears to my eyes seeing how they updated the track to have him shortly after his passing. A man who made millions of people’s childhoods and can never be replicated… its one of the most magical and greatest experiences in any game PERIOD…

Another great thing about Kalimari Desert is that it’s an almost exact replica of the Monza racetrack in Italy, which has had its country’s Formula 1 Grand Prix there almost every year since 1950. It’s an iconic track in real life, made into an iconic Mario Kart track. It’s clear that the dev team had some motorsports fans in their ranks.

I like all the city tracks and traffic themed races like Mushroom Bridge, Shroom Ridge and Moonview Highway, but this one is the only one I'm not a fan of though. The remake in MK8 is solid to say the least.

Battle Mode on Block Fort was always the best. One other thing about it that is unique to the N64 version is that green shells don't break apart after a few bounces. They keep bouncing around forever unless they hit someone/something, or the maximum number of them is reached. So as Block Fort battles go on, the bottom levels become super dangerous because of all the excess green shells floating around there.

No, it really doesn't. The track design is bland, the orange sands do little to alleviate the visual design, and it implemented possible shortcuts so lazily. The train obstacle isn't even a good gimmick. It's barely used for the tight slips that Schaffrillas describes. It just wastes time by bringing the race to a crashing halt for most people. Hell, at some point, it just becomes irrelevant to people in 1st-3rd, and only acts as an obstacle to everyone else, all for the ultimate crime of being hit by items. It just doesn't work in 64 and 7. The background is so dull, and is only interesting due to being evening, there's nothing there. The music is so boring, the only good part is the flute, it's a failure as music in a racing game.

Here's my defense of Wario Stadium: Learning to hop the walls is the perfect sweet spot of shortcutting. It's not a blatantly advertised shortcut like in Koopa Troopa Beach, it's not glitchy stuff like in Frappe. It takes some degree of timing and skill, but reasonably dedicated kids playing the game can learn to do it, especially the one right from the beginning. Then you never know just exactly how many shortcuts your buddies know, and there's the risk/reward of screwing up the jump and killing all momentum. Also, I love the big jump being so punishing. It's this terrifying landmark looming over the race. I've had so much fun seeing that ramp littered with banana peels, trying to bait out friends' Thunderbolts (or desperately hoping for a Boo to steal it) without falling into the gap... This track has CONSEQUENCES, both good and bad, and that's exciting. If you had given me 5 guesses what the last track in your rankings would be, it never would have even crossed my mind.

Fun fact, MK64 was my first Mario Kart game, because my cousin had a N64 (which might actually get given to me soon!). No one even knew drifting was possible in my family for YEARS, and I didn’t know it was a thing until my brother showed me in MK8. That same brother also informed me of drifting in MK64 years later, and I still haven’t gotten the hang of it. Also I’m only ever able to play Rainbow Road and Mushroom Cup. The rest are too difficult for me, a casual.

Yeah, it's not _that_ ugly, all things considered. It's just a dirt track with a repeating Wario Face jpeg on the walls. And the layout reminds me the most of the Hot Wheels GBA games I grew up with, which is where I learned racing techniques. Not much is patently unfair like the snow courses or Banshee.

Now he was a little bit ahead of me, but when we were about to pass the castle, I said, "The castle's actually a shortcut." So what does my friend do? As a kid, the only two things I'd ever do in this game were occasionally play Battle Mode with family, and go into Time Trial and just explore the courses at my own leisure. I basically never touched the singleplayer GP races. Driving onto Peach's Castle in Royal Raceway really just blew my mind as a kid because it was the first time I had ever seen an area from ONE game also be in ANOTHER game. Also shoutouts to all the Machinima-style videos circa 2008 that would have Mario driving to the castle in Mario Kart 64, then hard cut to Super Mario 64 footage, lmao

While I've never played 64's Frappe Snowland, i have played the DS Retro version, and i must admit that does at least fix Lakitu's no fun allowed barriers somewhat by using differently coloured snow to tell you where you can't drive. And admittedly, going through the snow valley is quite nostalgic to me.
