I recently upgraded from WF-1000XM4 to AirPods Pro 2nd-Gen! So far, I don't dislike the AirPods, especially since I use an iPhone as my main driver (ironically as an Android developer). Otherwise, I would've upgraded to the WF-1000XM5 to take advantage of the LDAC & custom EQ-ing that the AirPods lack. Anyway thanks for this insanely in-depth review! I'm so glad you mentioned how Sony can sound "muffled." I thought it was just me thinking I didn't have the ears for the amazing WF-1000XM4 and their default sound, thus me drastically lowering those mid bands in the EQ. (I'm not part of that group who believes in flat EQ audio purity or whatever, sorry!) So I was super surprised by how "airy" the AirPods sound, and especially impressed with the Spatial Audio feature; it sounds more like I'm at a live event rather than having speakers blasting directly between my head. This video confirms that either XM5 or AirPods would be a good choice though; for me, I'm reluctantly forgoing Sony's custom EQ-ing for Apple's "airy" AirPods and great ecosystem support. (Plus it helps that the AirPods are cheaper and Apple Music on the MacBook actually offers custom EQ-ing!) Thanks for your effort and time into this video! I certainly trust you as an audio engineer who knows what they're talking about! 🐢🐢🐢

Oh yeah, and just a heads up, I'm pretty sure LDAC only works on Android anyway, so AirPods would probably be the right choice. Just got my xm5's and I can certainly confirm that I would miss the custom EQ if I didn't have it. Turned the bass a bit up as I like to be able to *feel* the bade instead of just trusting that it exists.

The only draw back for me with the WF-1000xm5 is the touch control for volume. Tapping it 4x for volume makes it very uncomfortable and nerve wrecking and not as intuitive. They should make it like the Senheisser with touch and hold for volume control.

@@ThisIsTechToday Agree, touch and hold or swipe, both of them are far superior to tapping 4 times like an idiot. Even tapping 3 times is too much and I often miss tap it and the result is something which I don't want to do and further increases the effort. Tapping more than 2 times especially becomes a problem if you are moving. People like you can give this type of feedback to Sony and we can just hope they listen to you in their future updates. This comparison test is AMAZING! So far, audio/hifi reviews have not (really) been capable of conveying the differences in sound signature and therefore having to rely on the (subjective) description of the reviewer or the measurements/specs of the product. I think this is the closest you can come to concluding your preferences, apart from A-B testing different products in real life at the same time, something which is definitely tricky for the average consumer (especially hygiene wise when it comes to in-ears/IEM's) Aside from providing an unbiased approach, I applaud you for your natural and pleasant presence on camera and the slick editing and quality of the video. After listening to these samples I think separation in the mid range for the Airpods is incredible, you can clearly place vocals separate from the rest which is something I prefer a lot. Not only that but vocals sound clear and full. I think vocals sound pretty good on the Sonys as well, but it feels like the singer stands right next to some instruments. The Bose earbuds do a good job on the separation of vocals but the clarity is not great at all and it sounds "boxy".

Hi! XM4 user and fellow audio engineer here. The blanket sound you described with the XM4 is definitely an issue. This issue seems to increase drastically with the volume level, almost like the headphones starved for power. At full volume especially with harder bass heavy tracks or metal the top end would muffle severely, and the low end would quiet and become sloppy in response. If I turn the volume down, I notice significant improvement in clarity and bass response with each step down from max until it levels out about 3 notches downs from full (on IOS). Overall, what would make it worth it for me to upgrade to the XM5's would be if the EQ stayed clear, consistent, and thick throughout, even at max volume. Bonus points if it gained me a little more volume at max over the XM4's. Can you speak to this issue for me? Great video by the way m8
@NinaLarss Жыл бұрын
I just got the XM5 and I can now compare with the XM4 that I also own. I feel that they're a lil too clear for me, almost harsh, brighter in a "digital" way I don't know if that makes sense. And I miss the smooth and deep low end of the xm4. The kicks are very "bumpy", super super dynamic. If I want to feel the full freq range (especially in the low end part) of a song I have to crank up the volume more than before and it makes the feeling of the kicks hard on the ear and tiering eventually. My XM4 have a problem and I loose the battery quickly on right earbud... Making them unsuable for more than 5 minutes. If I knew I would have bought a second pair of XM4 instead of the XM5. But I'm only talking about my personal tastes. We all have a different perception of sound and everyone ear is different.
@colev39611 ай бұрын
@@NinaLarss Interesting. Genre can play a large part in this as well. Have you played with the EQ on the Sony app to remove some of the highs? Also, I will tell you that Sony is replacing the XM4's that have this battery defect if you call, they did with mine and sent me a new pair very recently. If you are still not happy with you XM5's I would be happy to work out a trade deal with you for my new XM4's. I'm wanting more high frequency at volume with hardcore music :D

Coming to the audio, to me the Airpods pro 2 sounded more wider in the lot, XM5 sounds good but soundstage and separation is not wide and clear as Airpods pro 2, bose were very unexciting in all the scenarios, XM4s were mellow through out. As an older person there are certain frequencies that I can't hear anymore which makes looking for hi fidelity earphones hard. A 20 something listening to earbuds aren't going to sound the same to a 50 year old. I like to use this feature called adapt sound on Samsung phones which conducts a hearing test and then boosts the frequencies you're having difficulty hearing. It makes earbuds sound a lot better. The Anker Liberty pro 3 has a hearing test on their app which is pretty good too, however the LP3 have, by default, a very V shaped sound profile. Lots of bass and treble. Currently I am using Huawei Freebuds pro 2 which is pretty good because it has a 10 band equalizer on their app. This makes adjusting the sound way more precise than what Sony or Anker has. Anyway, Sony and other companies should add hearing tests to their apps so it can adjust the frequencies which will make the sound profile consistent for all age groups.

I don’t get why people want even more vocals if these frequencies are what we our hearing picks the most. That’s why a V shape tuning is the most appropriate since it elevates the frequencies we have more difficulties with. Anyways, I guess that’s why people who listen to pop music are looking for. Flawless review. Great job!

Interestingly enough, the intimacy of the vocals are found in the low mids and the presence of them is the high mids, so everywhere that you wouldn’t be cutting out with a V shape, lol thanks.

I am one of the people that doesn't really like V shaped, I always boost the Mids on my Momentum 4, JBL Tour One and others, after setting the Vocals I play with the highs just to bring whatever got lost, I have tried V-shaped and is not for me, what gets me going on a lot of songs is hearing the lyrics, and when I don't care about the lyrics on a song the EQ goes back to Normal or a little Bass Boost.

The ANC is also preferable because I don't want to feel like I'm trapped in a box. If the ANC just drowns out the really loud noise I'm happy. Also another note is the talking test, I wanna be able to talk to people and actually hear them, though the microphone is kinda lacking in the Apple product its a well rounded set of buds

This is awesome stuff and greatly appreciated to see super duper indepth analysis, but I'd love to see more...mainstream (if that's applicable) versions added in. I feel like having a pixel buds pro or a samsung galaxy buds pro2 or whatever as comparison would be quite helpful. It's great to have all the super premium stuff because it's more of a 1:1 comparison, but most people (perhaps in the android space) don't have the highest end ear buds But for real, great stuff, super informative and I might be getting the xm5 now that I've fully embraced the xperia I V

Great comparision in detail 👏 You said ANC is not that different between bose and XM5. How is possible? I have both XM4 and QC2, and the main reason I will switch to XM5 will be ANC. Thanks in advance

Based on owning M4s I think that doing this test with default EQ settings is a big mistake. Cause setting your preferred eq is a game changer. Airpods dont have such an option. Default EQ is quite bland for many ppl and does not show the true capabilities of the headphones. Next time I would set my fav EQ for each pair and let ppl listen.

First of all, I know this video is a year old, but this is one of the best reviews, and most well-made videos I’ve ever seen. That being said, I think when it comes to sound quality and design of all of these, they’re all so fucking good that choosing between them is like choosing between a Bugatti, a Lamborghini, or a Ferrari. You literally can’t go wrong with any and you’re getting the best of the best With only slight minor differences that are mostly all just preference based. I have a feeling that even the people that seem to be super critical and think they can tell a huge difference between these headphones would be 100% happy using any of these as their daily driver because in real world applications these differences don’t mean much. What I mean again is that they’re all so high-quality that Regardless of which one you pick you’re still getting a pair of earbuds that are S tier amongst SS tier .

Thank you so much for what you do, it’s clear you have a passion for it and have the average consumer in mind. I listen to music non stop to the point where Spotify said every year I’m in the top 0.1 percent of users; ranging across all kinds of genres and gentle to harsh beats and so on. Different environments call for different vibes kind of thing. I finally decided to get myself a very decent pair of earphones after all these years. Having done a lot of observations from some of your videos about the factual stuff with all the earphones and my taste and realising you pretty much couldn’t be a better more authentic and fun to watch choice as to what I should buy, I decided on the Sony WF-1000XM5s and I can’t wait to try them and have a much more quality and comfortable listening experience. I’ve never really spent more than £60 on earphones where I have spent much more on other audio options prior and I have no clue why as they are one of the most important to me. Again thank you so much for what you do and being one of the good ones in the world!

I have a pair of Jabra 65s which I love the fit. You insert them and twist and bit and they are locked in. I don't think it had ANC but it performed very well for noise cancelling. I also have the Jabra 85 and the ANC is pretty good and better sound quality was better than the 65. However, the 85s don't fit as well so now I have the XM5s with the hope that I get good audio quality, fit and ANC. They sound great, the fit is good but I haven't been able to find an eartip size that works because ANC sucks right now on them compared to the Jabra 85. I would go as far as saying that the Jabra 65 provides the most noise cancelling (or ANC like qualities) because of the solid fit. Granted, I've only had the Sony's for a few days and still trying to find the right fit to maximize ANC on them. The other thing I like about those Jabra models is the physical tap "buttons" on the earbuds. I'm trying to get used to the Sony tapping method.

What a great professional test. Thanks a lot! I love my XM4s. I listen to them all day for about 5-8 hours. They are the only earbuds i know that have this full bodied organic sound with deep full bass and super sweet vovals. Even the XM4 and XM5 over ears, which i also know, don't have that organic sound and beautiful deep and full bass. The XM4 vocals have real body and sound realistic. I won't give my XM4s away. All Earbuds in this test have some kind of thin sound. Apple sound quite ok, but they have not enough mids body and not enough bass. I don't like the XM5 at all. Maybe there have little better highs. But the sound especially the vocals sound very thin, cold without body. For me it sounds even a bit harsh and clinical. In my opinion it is a big step back. My theory is that they have to shrink it 30-40% because customers want that and so Sony and the marketing wants that. Regarding amplifiers, chassis size and audio in general it is not good to shrink everything to the extreme. Sound "needs room to breath" and there laws of audio physics. Maybe they had to compromise on sound quality because shrinking it was the most important goal. Real: Maybe more highs, less mids, less body of vocals, less bass, less organic sound and a much thinner and a bit clinical sound. Marketing & lots of reviews on the market: New and better and bigger drivers, clearer and more open sound (...but clinical and thin imo) I am no fan of EQing in general. EQing degrades signal quality. Noone in Hifi uses EQ. If it don't fits something is wrong. The device hardware and setup, the source quality, the bluetooth quality. E.g. LDAC 990 is much better than LDAC 330/660. Much more body and fuller sound. Use the great Sony Music Center App to change to LDAC 990 permanently. Only because of LDAC 990 other devices with AAC (sounds clinical imo) or other lower bitrate codecs sound much thinner. Regarding your EQ setting it sounds more open but it looses body of vocals and music in general. The sound is more flat. For some people this is a good thing but not in my case. But thanks again for your great test!

The microphone issues is really annoying. All creators/reviewers had the same issue and a few pointed it out as you did at the end. As someone who really cares about call I'm afraid that is just an excuse and by the time the normal production comes out nobody will still be reviewing them. Looking forward to hearing what are your thoughts if you get a more recent model.

Awesome detailed video! I use the AirPods Pro but they kinda slip out of my ear pretty quick. How is the Sonys fit compared to Bose? I will be wearing the headphone for hours so I don’t want anything fatiguing. Are the Bose a lot more comfortable?
@ThisIsTechToday Жыл бұрын
The Bose combine the eartip and wingtip so that’s a dual setup. The sonys rely strongly, and mostly on the eartips themselves. That’s a hard one because I don’t know your ears, but I find the xm5 to be comfortable enough, but not as secure as the Bose, but the Bose app drives me mad.
@pierre3205 Жыл бұрын
@@ThisIsTechToday thanks for the response! I’ll give the Bose a try since ear tips usually don’t work with me. Hopefully they won’t be too much of a hassle! :)
