15 November marks the 136th anniversary of the start of the Berlin Africa Conference. In commemoration of this date, the project Dekoloniale Memory Culture in the City is convening the Dekoloniale Berlin Africa Conference. The event will be transmitted live from the project space in Wilhelmstraße 92 in Berlin-Mitte. The project space at Wilhelmstraße 92 is located between the former sites of the Reich Chancellery and the Foreign Office, the settings where events took place back then. The Reich Chancellery is where the envoys of the European powers, the USA and the Ottoman Empire met in 1884 at the invitation of the German Reich and the Republic of France to reach an agreement about the rules for the colonial partitioning of the continent and thus also the exploitation of Africa.
While at the historic conference 19 white men brought their colonial interests on the African continent into balance over a period of four months, we would now like to convene an anti-colonial panel consisting of 19 women of African descent. The Dekoloniale Berlin Africa-Conference simultaneously serves as preamble and prelude to Dekoloniale Memory Culture in the City.
Together with the team of Dekoloniale Memory Culture in the City, Tarik Tesfu and the 19 conference participants.
