Although the story this was based on is in Gary IN; the movie is based in Pittsburgh. My understanding of the move is that they moved from another home in Pittsburgh, because how else would Cynthia be so familiar with the family? That's how I reconcile the potential plot hole of Ebony and the kids' familiarity with the corner boys--that they're just in a different house in the same or nearby neighborhood.

I believe the film indicated it was Pittsburgh. Whereas the actual story was based in Gary Indiana. After understanding the back stories of many films where there’s always an actor’s schedule conflict that impacts the original script; whereas filmmakers are having to go back to the drawing board to rewrite a part in a short timeline. They tend to not step back to connect the dots; it’s all about connecting the editing. Andrea Day was good eventually but in the beginning it was obvious she simply regurgitating dialogue without believable emotions. I wouldn’t be surprised if Glenn Close gave her some parters. But Glenn in the grandmother role was excellent! I would have never thought she could pull that type of character off! Lee Daniel, like Tyler Perry, will continue to depict BW as deplorable human beings based off of their own experiences with BW in their lives. This type of trope has actually become generic ploy to make money. I agree he should have developed the plot on questioning the credibility of the possession claims. It would have made a better intriguing story. The local newspaper article with the actual mother was more intriguing to argue was she just trying to get out of paying rent. Anyway, I’ve never got a good feeling when I traveled through Gary.

I could tell - after the first 1/3 of the movie - that it would lean more drama than horror, so I reset my expectations, which made me enjoy it more. I agree with you on the pacing and some of the shots - there was one shot midway in (the pulpit) that appeared to be recorded with a shaky iPhone. The very last 5 minutes seemed rushed and made me say “really???” out loud. Definitely one I’ll watch again though. Andra Day’s performance was stellar!

I watched this movie knowing almost nothing about it beforehand. I LOVED the first 2/3, but was disappointed by the ending. Not as much as everyone else was, apparently (or at least judging by the reviews I watched afterwards), but I definitely think there was some missed opportunities and that they just phoned it in with some generic tropes at the end. But Glen Close and Andra Day were amazing! Actually, all the acting was wonderful. The script just needed some work to make the ending stronger. ETA: now that I watched the whole review, I will say I agreed with everything mentioned in this video besides 2 things: 1) I didn't think the pacing was as bad as Mr Movie Files did. For example, when Andra Day beat up the bullies on the corner, her daughter hadn't referred to them by name, just as 'the corner boys' or something like that. In other words, they might have not known them well at all, but had a couple initial run-ins with them in the first few weeks they lived there. This seemed absolutely believable to me. 2) I also thought all the young actors did great jobs. Yeah, there were moments that weren't so strong, but I think that was mainly due to bad dialogue, directing, and CGI. Just my opinion anyway

The most compelling part of the story, or the facts of it, was the actual police report. It was well written and not biased. The kid walking up the wall was true, but he had used the grandma as leverage but it was still weird. I think the movie would have been better without the deliverance, but there’s a lot of criticism from the public that a deliverance did not take place in real life. Cinematic wise, it did not disappoint though.

I think people are being too hard on it. Usually with these movies the characters are dull and the movie focuses on jump scares. People are being too hard on this. If it were white characters putting up the performances that these people of color did this movie would’ve get compared to Tyler Perry. It was cheesy but all these demon possession movies are.the fact that we didn’t get much demon activity until the 3rd but the first 2 acts were the most entertaining says a lot.

Also Netflix is known in making subpar movies.

Most of these thriller horror films that are based on true stories are very loosely based on actual events and rarely do the people that it's based on participate in making these films. Films like the Exorcist Amityville horror Texas chainsaw massacre the strangers are dramatized and not intended to be a documentary on the actual events. Although I enjoyed the film, I was left wondering is this supposed to be a comedy, because there were a lot of hilarious scenes. I would give this movie a three out of five stars, but Glenn Close 100% did her thing.

If that's where they hang on the regular, then you will see them on the regular. I'm from Chicago. However I lived in Indianapolis for 5yrs. Almost each year I lived on a different part of the city. My kids meet someone the 1st day and say this, my friend. Lol.. you wouldn't believe how many kids I helped. Then, for these same kids to turn their backs on them barely a month later. I was confused when the social worker said she moved, but she's in her old neighborhood I figured it's her mom's house, but it's not 😅

I understand Lee Daniels wants to get into a new genre and do his thing but I really think that he should have had a experience horror person on his side to help him make things a little more enjoyable
