I'm Torres Strait Islander and family is from Thursday Island. I grew up eating dugong & turtle. Turtle is monitored and community is informed when it's not allowed to be hunted. My family generally eat it only at very important times such as wedding or funeral. Both dugong & turtle have their own particular flavour unlike any other meat, with turtle stew being my favourite. Children never ate turtle eggs when I was young, only adults. You have to remember Aboriginal & Island people treat the ocean animals as food, just like European Australians might eat pigs, sheep & cows. I had a friend who worked at a prawn farm once, which was great to see, coz I eat alot of prawns. It's Japanese fisherman that catch whales & it's sold in restaurants. I never tried it when I saw it in Japan though, but I saw it on menus. It just depends how you look at it. Some Australians eat the animals on our coat of arms...Emu & Kangaroo. Kangaroo is sold as dog food also. I've eaten Emu sausages which were exquisite and kangaroo steak. I've also eaten crocodile. Each persons opinion is both valued and different depending how you look at it. I agree that conservation is very important for these animal though.

they are only allowed to hunt Turtle and Dugong for ceremony only e.g. Weddings, funerals and Tombstone unveiling. I am of Torres Strait Islander heritage and that is the only time they are allowed to eat. We only do it then but are very respectful. They can't have cows on the island due to limited land and resources for those types of animals. it is also expensive to purchase this from shops it tends to be more than the mainland. I don't eat it and I have tried it.

Obviously endangered green turtles are not that respected! Australia is about to begin a new gas line, by Woodside being developed right through a well-known Green Turtle nesting isle.

it's emotional because they are magnificent creatures. Also since you mentioned whale, Sonny went to Faroeh Island. Please react to that. thanks.

Worst part is native species managed properly for thousands of years as a food source by Aboriginal people have gone extinct within a few generations of exploitation by European colonists and their descendants. Most Aussies today are generally not even aware that these species existed here only a short time ago. Thank you for always showing so much respect for other cultures.👍

Garbage, we know that they ate what they could find, ran out of food and just moved on to another place! Be honest!

I had a co-worker tell me he is part Aboriginal and can eat anything. When questioned, which side of the family was Aboriginal. He became very abusive. The co-worker is European White. Poor turtle though.

Unfortunately as a indigenous Australians we been hunting turtles for generations. Its been passed down through generations by our forefathers. I am sorry that this is disturbing for few , but its the way of life for our people, in particular for burial and wedding ceremony .

Im a white australian. I respect the hunting of dugongs and sea turtles by Aboriginals but damn as a turtle conservationist who has rehab'd river turtles, was hard to see the catch.
