This should've been Leo's Oscar for best actor is well.
@8301TheJMan7 ай бұрын
@@carlosoto6245 Amen! But the way the Oscars work, the artist has to put forward their work and literally campaign for it within the Academy, and can only put forward their work for one specific award in a year. That year, Leo was also in "Blood Diamond," and Leo could put his work in "Blood Diamond" up for consideration for the award for best actor, therefore he couldn't and didn't put forward his performance in this. Which really sucks he didn't win it for that film either. I love the "Last King of Scotland" and Whitaker's performance in it - which he won best actor for that year, but I'm sorry - Leo in both this and in "Blood Diamond" were imo better and more deserving of the award . It's sort of funny though that he'd go on to finally win it for his work in "The Revenant," because both that film and his performance, though really good - no doubt, but were still imo not remotely as brilliant as "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond" films as well as when it comes to Lep's performances in both! Those two movies in combination, similar to what "Fight Club" and "Snatch" did for Brad Pitt - convinced me Leo was a legit phenom of an actor - rather than some pretty boy

@@aTofuJunkieyou are correct, this was inspired by the trilogy but it's one of the rare occasions where it improved over the original. Something so many especially non-American reactors get confused about is Billy's family situation. His father was working class from Southie, his mother was upper middle class from the north shore. He spent his weeks with his mother, and the weekend with his father. His father was an honest law abiding citizen who worked at the airport, his uncle Jackie who was his father's brother was a criminal associate of Costello's who was murdered by the mafia(Italians) in 97'. Mark Wahlberg mentions he was "popped by DiCastro" the funeral was closed casket. The uncle he admonished was his mother's brother from the wealthy side. He gave him a hard time about trying to be a cop because its a working class profession not because he's a gangster. The oxygen tank lady and scumbag young guy were his aunt and cousin from the working class criminal side of the family.

This is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. Others have noted that it is a remake of Infernal Affairs, the first film in a trilogy from Hong Kong; but Scorsese's version re-imagines the Costello character as an extremely thinly disguised version of Whitey Bulger, the powerful crime boss who ran much of the Boston area's underworld for a long time before the authorities were finally in a position to arrest him and he had to flee. When the movie came out twelve years later, Bulger was still in hiding, but he was finally caught five years after that, and died in prison.

I love how movies make it like there is some kind of rule that if someone asks you if you are a cop you have to tell them. It's the oldest cliche in the book. If that were the case, no one could ever go undercover because if they were asked if they were a cop, they would have to lie. If it were against the rules to lie, any evidence would be inadmissible.
