The message I took away from this scene was that Leonardos character was the real deal, a true man. Earlier in the film we see Matt Damon's character chat up the psychiatrist, he shows that he is clever, witty, and motivated to get what he wants, appearing to be the embodiment of masculinity. However, later on we see him fail in the bedroom by not being able to get it up, not being able to perform when it mattered. On the other hand, in this scene Leo appears to be a little bit of a wreck, he is begging for pills and just about holding it together. However, what we do learn about him is that despite his shortcomings, he can 'perform' when it really matters, that he will do what needs to be done despite hardship, this is the essence of masculinity. Basically, this scene and the scene where Matt Damon cant get his cock up really define the characters for me. On the one hand you have Matt Damon who will do whatever he needs to do to get ahead but falters when serious obstacles are presented. On the other, you have Leonardo who may be flawed, but has true convictions and will not be prevented from doing what he must, despite obstacles.

That's really a critical perspective of the two characters with a bull eye which needs to be appreciated

Interesting breakdown, although I’d argue that Matt Damon in this role had a harder time balancing the fake cop-criminal role. He probably pulled that girl to further prove himself to the rest of the cops as a family man and someone with just general good intent... don’t think he genuinely cared about the female in the first place, like he did for making sure he stayed undercover for Costello

This whole movie has a weird tone to it. Like a surreal nightmare of pure tension with a laid-back soundtrack in the background. Good job of captivating the feeling of stress and bone-splintering anxiety.

I used to think DiCaprio wasn't that great but after I saw this movie my respect for him as an actor grew dramatically! This should've been his first Oscar win.

A possible reason why Leonardo DiCaprio did not receive an Oscar nomination for his performance in this movie was because the Warner Bros. Studios initially did not want to favor DiCaprio over his co-stars and place him in the leading actor category. The studio favored DiCaprio's leading performance in Blood Diamond (2006) (which eventually got him a nomination). DiCaprio himself refused to campaign against his male co-stars in the supporting actor category, so Warner bought no supporting actor ads for DiCaprio, and he did not receive a nomination.

The Departed has only grown on me over the years and especially the triangle of trust and betrayal between Frank, Billy and Sullivan and the relationship between Billy and Dignam and Queenan. Three men doing everything they can to deceive the other and three loyal to no one except each other. There's alot to chew on.
