I saw this when I was 18. Martin Scorsese has made some fantastic films but for my money this is his masterpiece. Obviously I’m biased because I saw it at an impressionable age but boy what a flick.

Scorsese has more movies, apart from 'The Departed,' deserving that masterpiece title, ie.; Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Raging Bull, to name but a few. But, I agree with you The Departed is a masterpiece made by a movie maker at the peak of his powers. Period.

Not sad. Absolutely terrified by the fact that Queenan was the only person who could identify Costigan as an informant, protecting him from prosecution as part of Costello's gang. Maybe Dignam could/would protect him, but he's a prick and the two of them can't stand each other. Costigan was just praying that by some miracle Queenan might be alive even though he was thrown from the building. He believes at this point that within the next few days he will end up arrested, wanted by the FBI, or dead. He catches a break when Costello's entire gang is killed in the shootout, giving the opportunity to bring himself in, but ultimately the fact that he was never able to identify Costello's mole came back to get him killed.

Great movie, but the writing for this scene was soooo lazy. Undercover cop's supervisor goes to some old empty office building in the middle of the city and he goes to the 6th floor roof in the middle of the day to talk with his mole, with no exit plan? 100% deserved to be thrown off that building, along with the writers.
@EGRJ7 күн бұрын
He deliberately sacrificed himself to distract the bad guys Billy could escape. That WAS the exit plan. Either they both got caught and died, or the boss probably would. Best case scenario, they take him alive, which gives the other cops a chance to save him, and maintains Billy's cover. Did you miss when he crossed himself? This could've happened anywhere. Anywhere it wasn't practical for both of them to escape, which could happen even with an "exit plan". No plan survives contact with the enemy. I feel like a lot of people just want to dunk on the writers instead of engaging with the movie.
@repealthepatriotact7 күн бұрын
@EGRJ Durr. You missed my whole point. No one would have been sacrificed, and they both would have gotten away clean if they had a better meeting spot. All they really had to do was to get two burner phones and talk to each other, but no.....they had to meet in the middle of the day on the roof of some empty building. If they wanted to sacrifice Martin Sheen's character they could have easily done it in a more creative believable way. But no, let's just have the interns write a scene while we get massages, and then go home early.
