If you're impatient (I am) ,try to make a pointed tip on your eraser with a hobby knife, it works much faster, especially with a new eraser.. It's a bit more difficult than using sandpaper, but with some practice it can be really worthwhile. You will go through your refills like crazy this way, but they're cheap...

I have one of these and agree its absolutely excellent. The only problem I find sometimes is that the shavings can stick to the paper and I have to use my Tombow Mono to drag them off

Derwent products are not always easily available outside Britain. And when they are, they may be quite expensive. I just bought a set of Derwent charcoal pencils here in Japan and they are almost twice as expensive as in Britain. I can't find the Derwent eraser here, but they sell an unbranded, dirt cheap (0.8 pounds) Chinese made electrical eraser here. It works reasonably well,but one has to always keep a clean eraser tip in it or it will smudge the drawing. I'm sure the Derwent one is better but if I can't find one ,that's the end of the story. For people who can't find a Derwent (or any other) electrical eraser, or who can't afford one, I would suggest to try a kneaded eraser for the things that Ms.Wider is demonstrating here in this video. Squeeze the eraser into a pointed tip, and give it a try...

Thankyou Finch. Yes the kneaded eraser is good for some techniques but not all. The way that the Derwent eraser avoids smudging is very special. Thats one of the benefits that I particularly enjoy about this eraser. Also, the battery-operated motor in it is particularly powerful I find. Do you have any alternatives for getting a sharp point when you don't own sandpaper?

Yes, do you have a nail file/emery board? You can use that. You can also use it just as it comes; flat and use the edge of the eraser tip.
