What an incredible fighter. In every way. Part of that is gaining the respect of your captures, so they don't just shoot you on sight. He had to be cunning, smart and brilliant. And Andrew Barr was all of that. Rest in Peace, Great Warrior. Barr's example is one of massive character under fire and relentlessness. Australian proud, for sure.

Amazing story of courage and skill and determination. Just one criticism. "Old Nick" was BORN in Wellington, New Zealand!!!! While clearly he moved with his parents to Oz and was given his flying break with the RAAF - he was at all times a KIWI (New Zealander!!) NOT and Australian!!!! As an "AustraZealander" I have noted that Aussies quickly "adopt" New Zealanders who have stories to tell like this!!!! I am proud of the ANZAC spirit and the camaraderie that has always existed between the Aussie's and the Kiwis - (apart from on the Rugby and Cricket pitches) - however I truly recognise that this is primarily the story of an extraordinary KIWI flying ace!!!!❤❤❤

Barr was indeed a gifted pilot along with Bobby Gibbes and Clive Caldwell, flying the old Tomahawks and early Kittyhawks. As Caldwell said, without the ability to fight the LW above 15,000' he would allow himself to be used as bait and take some rounds simply to lure the 109's down from their perch. Aussies were tough lads, but the LW & Desert Afrika Korps held the advantage with better aircraft until their supply lines were cut in 1942 by the forces in Malta. By Sep 1942 the RAF had air superiority with more, albeit less effective aircraft (Kittyhawks) .
