What an incredible fighter. In every way. Part of that is gaining the respect of your captures, so they don't just shoot you on sight. He had to be cunning, smart and brilliant. And Andrew Barr was all of that. Rest in Peace, Great Warrior. Barr's example is one of massive character under fire and relentlessness. Australian proud, for sure.

“We are born into this time and must bravely follow the path to the destined end. There is no other way. Our duty is to hold on to the lost position, without hope, without rescue, like that Roman soldier whose bones were found in front of a door in Pompeii, who, during the eruption of Vesuvius, died at his post because they forgot to relieve him. That is greatness. That is what it means to be a thoroughbred. The honorable end is the one thing that cannot be taken from a man”. ~ Oswald Spengler

Amazing story of courage and skill and determination. Just one criticism. "Old Nick" was BORN in Wellington, New Zealand!!!! While clearly he moved with his parents to Oz and was given his flying break with the RAAF - he was at all times a KIWI (New Zealander!!) NOT and Australian!!!! As an "AustraZealander" I have noted that Aussies quickly "adopt" New Zealanders who have stories to tell like this!!!! I am proud of the ANZAC spirit and the camaraderie that has always existed between the Aussie's and the Kiwis - (apart from on the Rugby and Cricket pitches) - however I truly recognise that this is primarily the story of an extraordinary KIWI flying ace!!!!❤❤❤

Barr was indeed a gifted pilot along with Bobby Gibbes and Clive Caldwell, flying the old Tomahawks and early Kittyhawks. As Caldwell said, without the ability to fight the LW above 15,000' he would allow himself to be used as bait and take some rounds simply to lure the 109's down from their perch. Aussies were tough lads, but the LW & Desert Afrika Korps held the advantage with better aircraft until their supply lines were cut in 1942 by the forces in Malta. By Sep 1942 the RAF had air superiority with more, albeit less effective aircraft (Kittyhawks) .

"They won't do anything" is their mantra because it's true! Witness joy reid yammering provable lies nightly ratcheting them up daily when her words don't get traction. Time to stop ignoring them assuming they'll get over it - they're no longer pubescent teenagers - they are adults! Time for accountability!

I suppose the 'winners' re-write the facts! The germans were top notch in most aspects. Air, tank, u-boat..weapons. proof is that they fetch the highest prices at auction. Bookies know..

Auctions have nothing to do with what is better. They only show what collectors want. A lot of German equipment was destroyed by the Allies. You know, when the Germans were losing the war.

@@oldesertguy9616 German equipment was simply better. From the Jerrycan (still used the world over) and MG 42 (still in use today in the form of the MG3) to the Me 262 and everything in-between. Compare the German Stahlhelm to the ridiculous Brodie helmet which hadn't changed from WW I.

@@biernut8723 You mean like the Kar 98 that hadn't changed since 1898? The Germans had some good stuff, but they also had some crap, and all that great equipment didn't win their battles, did it? The Allies had some excellent stuff, and didn't field jets simply because they didn't have to. If you'll notice, nobody used 262's after the war, and nobody used Panthers and Tigers except for France, which quickly abandoned them. The German stuff The Allies had the proximity fuse, better radar, and a host of technological advances that were held back because they didn't need them. We also had the atomic bomb.

No loss on 12.12.41! So, fake claim. On 13.12.41 only one Me 109 was lost due to fighter near El Adem, second due to A.A. at Tmimi airport. Only one Ju 88 was slightly damaged 10% at Derna airport with two crew killed. No loss either on 31.12.41 or 1.1.42 in Afrika. On 11.1.42 two Me 109 were lost, one S.W. Brega (pilot killed) and second El Agheila (pilot captured as PoW).

3 SQN RAAF helped kicked Rommel back to Germany, and flew all up through Italy till 1945. Most of Nick Barrs combat was before the US entered the war!
