Like how you used Japanese posters and trailers of the origin media of the references, it’s a nice little detail and really puts you in the shoes of the developers.

breaking bad 64 was such an interesting cancelled game i really would have loved to see the ambitious ideas it presented be realized.

Salsa was actually based off of a curious george plush the dev team had that they repeatedly tortured by dipping it in grape juice. Source: trust me bro

The only purple monkey I can think of is Kiki for A Link to the Past which is also a Nintendo game and still somewhat new at the time.

For Salsa, there's a purple monkey character named ChuChu in the Utena anime which wouldve aired around the same time. Not sure if that might be it.

It might have been unintentional but I've always thought of the Dragos and Flint could also be a homage to various Cowboy & Dinosaur films, such as the 1969 film The Valley of Gwangi.

i’ve been fascinated by earthbound 64 since i was like 5, when the fan translation was relatively new my dad installed it onto his pc, he was explaining to me how the gba version came to be and gave a basic explanation of its origins on the n64. later on i did my own research, i learned how the game evolved over time. anyway, i still wait for the day that i can experience the prototype of the original version of mother 3.

Is there any concrete evidence for the Jonathan Banks connection other than the fact that they kind of look similar? I honestly doubt it since, while he was in a lot of movies and shows, I don’t think he was really a big name in the way he is now thanks to Breaking Bad. His most famous roles were probably Wiseguy and Beverly Hills Cop, and he wasn’t bald or white-haired in either of those.

Okay so the video is awesome and all but the answer to the pigmasks question has a VERY simple response and it's the same inspiration that created dath vader as a character for example. Nazis, specifically imperial japanese soldiers and nazi japanese soldiers from WW2, Itoi has a clear anti war anti capitalist anti imperialist stance in his works, he might never admit it but representing those soldiers as nothing more than useless dumb pigs was DEFINITELY part of that message

the Pigmasks are literal "capitalist pigs"

Mr Yattore actually reminds me of a teletubby. This might not be the case but with the popularity of the show and it's year of release it could be possible.

I recall that Mother 3 was originally pinned as a detective story in its earliest stages of conceptualization so despite the common thread of spaghetti westerns for the inspiration of a lot of these 64-era designs, the chance that Itoi and staff had seen Cheap Detective is probably more likely than you may think. And now I'm just thinking about the possibility of a character being modelled after Peter Faulk in Mother 64.

8:40 I don't think this is related, the Darth Vader guy was a character that was featured in Brownie Brown's blogposts before they started working with Itoi.

Another awesome video. Also, maybe you could make a video on all the removed story content from EB64 to M3 on GBA. I think that would make for an interesting video. Whatever it is you do, hopefully you have more Mother 3/Earthbound 64 videos planned. Keep up the great work! 🎉

This is a pretty good video however, and this is not your fault at all, I'm always bothered at moments like 14:12 where they mention The Dollars Trilogy but skip talking about how it's a trilogy and instead just say "Oh, For a Fistful of Dollars (which kickstarted the Spaghetti Western genre) and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (which many insist perfected a lot of it)". Specifically, how they always skip talking about FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) which is in some ways better than For a Fistful of Dollars. The sequel bangs! It has a way better antagonist, an amazing soundtrack by Ennio Morricone (just like the rest of the trilogy but still) and some great visuals and story. Hell, go look up "For a Few Dollars More - El Indio's Showdown (1965 HD)" in KZbin right now. That's one of the best introductions for a despicable villain I've ever seen. The music, the editing, the framing, the dialogue, it's all so good!! It's not nostalgia blinding me here. That's just cinema! I understand this is a video about EarthBound 64 but I will NEVER waste a chance to try and sell people on watching that movie.
