Graphics are at the point now - and have been for sometime - where design should take priority over gimmicky technological innovation in the visuals. The design philosophy and artistic vision were key to keeping it really fresh - not mere graphical fidelity. 2014 was the eight console generation so it's no surprise it looks good, it would be more surprising if it didn't look good. Most games in a console generation look about the same because they use the same technology. Sure improvements can be made as devs learn to use the resources better but most difference is in art direction and engines. Does TLOU2 (2020) look a lot better than Uncharted 4 (2016)? Not really. Does Sekiro (2019) look much better than Bloodborne (2015)? Even early 8th gen games like Infamous Second Son, Killzone Shadowfall, P.T, AC Unity or games from just a year later like Dying Light, Arkham Knight, Until Dawn, MGS5, The Witcher 3, Rise of The Tomb Raider look on par with games from 2020. If they released Alien Isolation 2 on current generation, it would look slightly better sure but not by a lot, there's a limit to how much they can improve. That's why I'm always a bit sad when a sequel releases in the same generation, because it means it won't be a big (technological) improvement over the original.
@adaptorperish13224 жыл бұрын
@@10secondsrule Yeah, but people are wetting themselves whenever ray tracing is mentioned. So, they wanna see it everywhere and that’s why we’ll see it in every damn next-gen game until new gimmick become propelled by console makers/devs that have nothing else to show, because they need to minimise the expense as much as possible to keep that €500 price and manage to profit at least half of it. I love how Control was showing off RT. That game like 3 puddles (all in poorly lit rooms) and no water at all, the environments are mostly concrete or hard rocky surfaces...that are reflecting most of the light, because that’s how it works. Yet, people loved it, because mankind is a lost cause.

@@Youcannotfalter truly, the lenght was an extra for me. The story was well developed and the pacing was balanced. What I meant about being overlooked was because at the time of release, not only major reviewers were lukewarm in their reception, but even people took a while to discover the game and appreciate the ammount of quality that went into developing it, the detail, the immersion, considering that at the time, Alien didn't have a proper videogame counterpart and the franchise was already a shell of it's former self (cinematic franchise). It has a cult following nowadays because this game was as you just said, ahead of its time and nothing short of a miracle by today standards.
@michaelmonstar42764 жыл бұрын
I don't think all opinions were based on the failure of "Colonial Marines". I think a lot of the "underrating" was done by the people this game wasn't for and they kind of discredited it as boring or something like that. - This game didn't have a global or very mainstream appeal. It was for fans of the movie(s), horror(games) and perhaps a few other kinds of people. But other than that it wasn't very appealing to the rest and so it didn't get all the credit it deserved. - This is a piece of art among videogames, even apart from the gameplay or even playing it. A very special piece of work at least.

Cause it went through a bunch of developers and development became an inconsistent mess because of it. - And considering that one team on a single project, like CA on "Isolation", already has trouble figuring out their own idea, imagine how difficult it would be to do it right one a project that has gone through different teams. I still wish that perhaps they could've taken the assets of "Colonial Marines" and then CA could've reworked or remade that game into a new and improved version. I mean, if I were Sega or part of CA I would've suggested that at the very least, considering the success of "Isolation". - I mean... money... But perhaps nobody cared anyway and even if they wanted to the stigma attached to that game might have been too hard to get rid of and convince people. - Then again, had they marketed it with "remade by the creators of Alien Isolation" or something... Who knows! - It's getting late, but I think there's still a window to do that.

I put in approx 8 hrs then set it down and always wanted to go back to it but at the time was finding it hard to get the time. I finally came back a year after release, still didn't know much about it but knew I wanted to play it. I decided to start over and by the time I got about 10 hrs in I really couldn't stop playing it. There were several moments story wise that were truly surprising and to this day I have nothing but high praise for this game. In fact it could have been longer and yet length was a large downside considered by many. This game is every bit underrated. The game deserves more praise if you are an alien fan in any way

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting to see new footage from the third person build of the game! 9:34 is a space/scripted event that's in the final game, and I think I hear Andrea Deck's voice - they must've gotten a lot further than I'd expected in the third person version.

Thank God it was not the 3rd person. Try re2 remake in first person. Amazing though much more linear experience (in comparison).
@michaelmonstar42764 жыл бұрын
@@10secondsrule I think it would've been cool to have an option. Perhaps not like an option at the start but like an unlockable mode or something. - But if it was always in 3rd person, I think it would've been compared to Dead Space a lot more. I mean, as soon as this video showed it to me my mind went to Dead Space. When it went back to first person view, it just became its own thing again. - It's a very console-esque thing, the third person view in a videogame, which is fine. But that sort of immersive personal experience you get in the first person perspective turned out to be important and I think it also made games like 'Resident Evil 7' all the better and more unique for it.

It 100% saddens me that we will never get a proper sequel to Isolation. It was the Alien game that I have always wanted to play as a fan of the franchise. They captured the atmosphere and feeling of that world perfectly, because you could tell they were passionate fans of Alien. They honestly made me scared of the xenomorph again, and that is something I thought would never happen. As much as I'd love a sequel to this game and buy it in a heartbeat, I am skeptical as to what more they could do with the franchise without it feeling same-y. I think Creative Assembly's greatest achievement in this game was the environments and ambience, so much so that even without the alien I could still see myself playing it just to explore. As long as that experience and that vision carries over to whatever they make next, I couldn't care less what IP it is.

A fantastic game. I loved "playing chess" with the alien. That's what it felt like sometimes. The AI was that good. I didn't much care for the synthetics though and I actually felt the game was too long. But it doesn't detract from my overall feeling about the game. It's almost a masterpiece.
@TheSGBrown4 жыл бұрын
Lots of folks; both players and reviewers had felt the story was too long. Actually, the game wasn't any longer than other titles of its time; it's just that it was such a tense experience, player-fatigue had impacted the 'personal experience' more than, say, a racing game or a shooter. -it 'felt' long due to its player-immersion and wtf plotline.
@larsmuldjord99074 жыл бұрын
@@TheSGBrown No, it was too long in my opinion. I don't see how "what other games did" makes that any less true. If you end up just wanting a game to end, the game is too long, simple as that. The game simply didn't have enough diversity beyond 10 hours to keep me interested. I did finish it, but I ended up downloading some sort of cheat to just get through the last 6 hours of it as quickly as possible, so I could see how it ended. The synthetics passages especially grew old on me very, very quickly. But as I said, it doesn't really detract from my overall opinion of the game. It is extremely well-made and the xenomorph itself especially.

I'm glad it ended up as first person, i'm sure it would've been good 3rd person, but the fear is so core that being thrid person would've created too much distance between you and the alien to really feel the fear.
@michaelmonstar42764 жыл бұрын
Yea, and even a distance between you and the character you play. - Something that amplifies the "scare/fear" factor to me is when it's in first person perspective, it always has. Despite me having been an advocate of the first-person perspective, being really excited about games like 'Mirror's Edge' (which, ironically, in hindsight I actually think should've been in third person for the sake of the experience, despite making it unique in first person). As a kid and even teen I had trouble ever even starting first person games, even if they weren't horror, because it's so in-your-face. Even 'Minecraft' startles me and occasionally creeps me out to this day... - And I'm not saying that games in third-person a not-scary, I mean there's 'Dead Space' and even parts like in "Uncharted" or "Tomb Raider" could be creepy. - But still, you're literally more detached from the character, rather controlling the character than "being the character" as if it's you in that situation.

Out of all the Horror games I have played, I have never truely been more terrified to continue playing a game before. I had to take so many breaks from this game. I remember the first time I encountered the alien in a vent. I had just started playing it again after a few days break and about 5 mins in was crawling through a vent and turned a corner and it was there crawling towards me. Instantly paused and closed the game and didn’t touch it for like a week. Hands down scariest Horror survival game. Also never knew the game was first developed in 3rd person. @michaelmonstar42764 жыл бұрын
@@michelottens6083 It's so weird that they first give them a chance with all conviction and then when there isn't enough money it's like garbage to them. (Though, I don't know if the same people made both decisions.) - I know that they probably expected it to sell like a movie or something. But if it made ANY money, I would be like "Can you make another one?... I want more money. But you do your thing and make it for me.". - That's basically how it works. The boss should be up front about business and then just put the employees to work. Not fire them, which doesn't generate money and only save some money temporarily. - I see now that they went all-out on "Total War", making it their annual release, though. - How long until that will incorporate "surprise mechanics"?...
