in my highschool we had chemistry labs with old tables and me and my partner sat in the back. One day while mixing potentially life-threatening liquids without a care in the world we realized one of the tiles in the table was removable, and left a message. Then, next monday we got an answer, and it went like this for a few weeks until this ritual was rudely interrupted by a worldwide pandemic. Now I'll never go back to highschool. I wish we'd finally get to know who we were talking to.

I see it that he is a transgender male. We see him admiring the other girl in his class at the beginning and assume he has a crush on her but it is because he wants her hair. That's why they both have the same surname and that's why at the end everyone gives a dirty look/smirks at the new girl. The desk is the device in which he discovers himself. I'm not completely sure on that but if you watch it again with this theory it seems to make a lot more sense. Good film, I like the music.
