Hope it goes well! Just thought I would say there is no shame in googling how to do/access the secrets, because many of them are hidden to the point of flaw in design. I just wanted to say this because there is so much cool stuff in this game that you could potentially miss out on unless you look it up. Have fun buddy, this game is fantastic :)

The only way to beat the dragon is with an insane amount of damage or melee immunity. Last time I beat him I used the runestone of light to turn him into paste by firing luminous drills at him, killing him in seconds Still easier than the connoisseur, though.
