Will never forget how defenders rather clear the ball to the corner because they were absolutely terrified of Rory Delaps long throw ins. That was some aura back then.

Stoke fan here… we’ve got a mute board who are so disconnected with the fans. It’s divided between fans, but they make disastrous decisions from player spendings to having their mates in board positions. We make no turnaround on players, no profit from talent, everyone who’s a success elsewhere becomes a flop at Stoke and vice versa. On top of this, they’ve already chosen Norwich’s head coach (not their manager) with no managerial experience at all as the manager favourite within an hour of sacking Schumacher. The club is in the bin. They’ve shat on their fans. I genuinely am starting to dislike our club.

As someone who grew up in Stoke during the Premier League era it needs to be said that so many fans were never satisfied with finishing in the top half/comfortable mid table of the Premier League after the initial few Pulis years. He was forced out for his style of play despite his overachievements year after year. Then they were never satisfied with Hughes for not taking them to the next level. Greed is a toxic thing in football and this big section of the fanbase are getting exactly what they deserve

Good points......and it reminds me of Charlton Athletic.....who 16-17 years ago finished 8th in the PL ( !!!!!!!!!) and their Manager was dismissed. Relegated the next season and have mainly been in Division 3 ever since. Talk about delusional Owners !!

Stoke fan here! We’ve been stuck in this cycle for ages. It’s basically because different managers want different squads and they never seem to gel. Because of a culmination of young inexperienced players, old players past their peak & bang average players that we overpay for its meant we are where we are. Now it’s looking as if we are focusing on utilising youth and we are supposedly acquiring a coach to help the above. To put us into a nutshell, we’ve lost our identity and we are a sinking ship without a captain… Ps. Loving the essay videos!

It's mad to think as you go by decades, the PL looks so much different every time. Kids these days don't remember when likes of Portsmouth, Charlton, Bolton, Coventry, were PL main stays. Years later, you got likes of Reading, QPR, Sunderland, Swansea, Stoke. Who knows, by time we reach 2030, some teams in league two right now, would be PL mainstays, While one of the current PL clubs could fall down like how teams like Stoke basically have.
@rjw4762
@rjw4762 3 ай бұрын
Right now, you wouldn't rule out Wrexham making it. Afterall, are they any smaller as a club than Luton ? I guess the difference is that Luton were an established top division club from 1982 to 1993, where as Wrexham never have been in the top league - yet.
@RW-nr6bh

Bournemouth and Brentford have probably assumed that role of relatively small clubs rising to become part of the PL furniture for a generation of fans. When I was at school it was Coventry and Wimbledon that seemed like they'd been there forever and always would be, even though in Wimbledon's case they'd only joined the League in the 1970s.

As a fan of 60 years, I think my team have been drifting since relegation from the top flight. The team was more fun to watch in League One under Gudjon Thordasson. I was shocked when the owner was interviewed at the start of the season and in response to the question what is your hope for the season, he said “a good season.” It lacked any vision or ambition. I can’t see things changing without these attributes and the loyalty of a very passionate fan base, is being tested to destruction.

It sound weird, but Stoke to me almost feel like they need to get relegated to League One for a reset, ideally with Port Vale there for the derby matches. Kind of a footballing tactically retreat I guess.

Daniel Storey wrote a piece about QPR and he said, I am paraphrasing, that a monied, benign ownership is not leadership. Many of these clubs don't have leadership because they employ people in the boardroom of no real worth and then create a structure that doesn't allow a manager to bring that leadership. If the Coates family are serious, one of them needs to dedicate their time full-time to the club.

I’m a Stoke fan. I was absolutely gutted that Schumacher got sacked/left (really not sure what actually happened there). He had the highest win % of any our 7 managers since we got relegated. The fans liked him. We started off this season well then we sack him after the first 5 or so games into the season. Crazy. I have lost all hopes of any progress season as we have YET ANOTHER season of letting the manager settle in and build the team he wants. Our current teams fullback situation is horrendous, we have no ball winning midfielder but our attack looks okay. This means we’re playing relatively well against worse teams (we have had some high scoring games this season) but we get absolutely dominated by any stronger team. Really don’t know what to expect of the new manager, however he has my full support, as usual. We will see a return to the top flight. We are a big club (one of the founding clubs in the English league) with owners who have the funds to bring in big talent. Let’s see what happens but I will always remain hopeful for the long term.

I went to my first Stoke game in 1961...supporting them has ALWAYS been a roller coaster with highs, lows, doldrums and party times...the down times have to be endured because they then make the good times all the sweeter. If you're a genuine fan, you know you're going to have to put up with some dross and keep faith with the club, because really great things WILL roll round again. Not to mention that even in rubbish periods, there's always the odd random entertaining performance/result. However, the club really should get behind one manager, believe in him and give him a longer time to build a consistent side. Maybe Pelach (welcome to the Potteries) might be that man...

Noticing that Swansea City got relegated that same season. A video on them would be brill (my team, no bias here… obvs)! You can track Swansea’s slow rot at the top level when the local businessmen that ran the club sold the club to distant, millionaire Americans. But despite being relegated to the Championship, there have been a series of near-misses in promotion pushes and academy success stories at the level too.

Being a Southampton fan, I always remember that game at the Liberty Stadium between us two clubs when Gabbadini got the winning goal, I can only assume you’ve got a bit of a grudge against us now after taking Russell Martin, Flynn Downes, Nathan Wood, and Ryan Manning

I think the closest thing we have to Stoke City today is Brentford. They are that mid table Premier League club. Who are just trying to stay in the top division. But Stoke are the Championship equivalent. I grew up watching Stoke thrive in the Premier League. To see them struggling is really quite sad for almost 10 years now.

Just to point out, Schumacher didn't buy any players. He was just a coach at Stoke City and not the manager, he had no decision-making power with regards to transfers.

Stoke fan here, no idea why we sacked Schumacher. He didn’t do a bad job. The fans loved him and yet, according to the board, he wasn’t the right fit for the club. And we’re replacing him with unknown assistant at Norwich, well done Stoke. Do I think we’ll be back in the prem in five years. No, I don’t think we will scrape playoffs. We’ll be languishing in mid table or relegation battles.

Schumacher was sacked beacuse he didnt get on with JW who we appointed with 0 experience last year.. some interesting decisions but the recent signings/appointments are at least players that have potential and aren't on the downhill of their career.. if we're still down there in 2 years we will be for the next 20

We seem to form a protective bubble around the Coates family as they are local and have pumped resources into us in the past, however they shouldn’t be immune to criticism, ever since John Coates took the majority of the club, it’s been bad decisions

Stoke fan here, it's been an incredibly tough few years. We get so hopeful every year. I feel like we have such a good squad like Jun-ho, Burger, etc. Just feels like bad decisions at the top. We accept mediocrity.

Arhan is a strange player, he didn't really get much game time when he was at Tokyo Verdy in J2 and only got the occassional cameo appearance. He seems to have settled in well with Suwon in the K League. Hope he has a future here in Europe. Warra throw-in.

Reminds me of how Birmingham City made a traitorous decision by sacking John Eustace while the club was in playoff spot and replaced with Wayne Rooney, who led this team to the relegation zone and never recovered back.

The only thing about schumachers sacking that surprised me was that it didn't happen at the end of last season. Stoke never give a manager time to get things sorted, sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and accept a rough season or two so the manager can get things exactly as he wants it. Players get used to how a manager wants them to play then the board sack him and things have to start all over again with a new gaffer who wants things done a different way.... But stoke will be stoke. They will poach another manager with the offer of big money, spend some dosh on some players and then 6 months down the line sack him claiming the club isn't going in the direction they want and then start the cycle all over again....

Sometimes it's nice to have a local billionaire family owning your club, other times they need to realise they either took them as far as they can, or they need to appoint better people in the boardroom who have a bold vision. They might have hit the right formula with Pelach, it might be another cycle of Stoke nonsense again. Who knows?
