I know the reveal from natural to supernatural halfway through the movie was amazing. l love when they do that.
@TheBigBlueBugofJustice Жыл бұрын
@@SomeoneIsAlwaysMovingOnTheSurf And it works especially well considering that, for a good while even after the reveal, it's still left kind of ambiguous as to whether something supernatural is actually going on, or whether the things Marianne was seeing were just in her head as a combination of extreme anxiety from being all alone all day in an apartment way too big for just herself in a new city where she doesn't have any real friends, and her strong, unfulfilled desire to have a baby. It's only really until much later in the film when we are finally, truly shown that, yes, there ABSOLUTELY ARE supernatural occurrences going on with Milton as the epicenter. And I think all of that just makes the film's pacing and atmosphere work SOOOO well, and it's definitely one of those movies that's even better the second time around, watching through again with all the knowledge gained from the first viewing helping to catch things you didn't/couldn't the first time. (Angel Heart is a fairly similar film in that regard, featuring the equally legendary Robert De Niro as the man revealed to be Satan himself at the end just like Pacino in The Devil's Advocate. Definitely give that a watch too!)

"Vanity is definitely my favorite sin". I still remember this line. This movie is excellent.
@gmb8583 жыл бұрын
I've watched the Devil's Advocate a dozen times; each time I found a different aspect to a character or their line of thinking that has subtext that isn't readily apparent. Every actor and actress in this movie is excellent and believable for the role. It is well photographed; it's pacing is constant- the climactic scene of Pacino as John Milton is a tour de force. Pacino makes the case for Satan, a sophistry of unmitigated gall and self aggrandizement that exemplifies the mendacity of Pride. So vain, so self congratulatory, he punches every button of human ambition and excess. Believe it or not, as a Christian, I became more aware of the trickery of the Devil in Milton's speech. Understanding that level of cunning has given me ideas on how to safeguard myself from the rationalized temptations of our world. The Devil's Advocate is a singular film, there is nothing quite like it. It is smart, it is emotional in way that most people can understand. The opening gives no hint of the ride the viewer is about to take, a ride that once they finish, they will never forget.
@alanaronald2443 жыл бұрын
Same, except I'm not a Christian & have watched it about half a dozen times. Still, lots to discover.
@riseagainstthemachine60792 жыл бұрын
I hardly disagree to be honest. I love Al Pacino in the movie. At the same time I think it is one of many examples about Keanu Reeves being a "just good enough" actor, instead of a good actor. I would need to research the name of the main cast female actor, I actually think she did very well. The plot is not complex at all. It tries to surprise you, still no one ever gets surprised by this movie. Its hard to get invested in the main character, because he developes so fast and never really does anything good to annother person. (Oh and the final is just straight up trash, time travel is a complex thing and way too complex for the makers of this movie) The wordplay with things that are connected to the old testament and spirituality is sometimes good. Most of the times it's not only far away from modern christianity, but it's also just too much and too forced. The good parts would have a way better effects, if they didnt feel like common but still forced speech. The way they represent sins and how humans can embrace those is actually not bad. Definitely not masterclass, but its fitting and often entertaining. So all in all I would call it a bad movie. Everything that is good gets boring and meaningless by pushing it too far. Everything that is bad is not bad enough to feel like entertaining trash. Still I'll recommend it to anyone. Al Pacino with one of his best performances is always watchable.

I did the same EXACT thing.. I went to go see Mr. BEAN at a Santa Cruz movie theater. I wasnt disappointed though. The scene where he screwed up the famous painting was hilarious. The only head scratcher to me was "I know What You Did Last Summer"...

Atkinson is one of the best physical actors of all time, I can't blame anyone for going to see Bean. I still watch old episodes here on the official YT channel, and it's still as funny as it was when I saw it back in the early 90s.

I saw this working at a mom and pop video store my senior year of high school. It flipped me out for a long time.

I always passed on this movie, but as usual, you have gotten my interest.

The opening scene is so riveting. You feel compassion for the girl who’s clearly been molested, yet are somehow able to root for Keanu Reeves’ character, Kevin, get a pedophile off.

Making Al Pacino and Keanu reeves play father and son in this movie was so convincing. They look like they could be father and son. It reminds me of the John wick movies with John wick and Winston having the same kind of father son relationship as Kevin Lomax and John Milton.

That scene with Connie Nielsen, you know... that one, very educational for 12yo me.

oh, i saw this in the theaters *before* Bean. it's a great movie. not a horror but definitely gave chills. i have it in my collection. Reeves and Theron reunited in Sweet November (2001) but couldn't recreate the onscreen chemistry that they had in The Devil's Advocate.

I have seen this movie a few times and it’s well done, but creepy as well. Al Pacino is an icon and has been in a lot of great movies.

Throughout most of this movie, Al Pacino was sucking on sieves of licorice. When he wasn't, he would occasionally flick his tongue like a 'serpent'.

Great movie. One of Pacino's best over the top performances. New York City is proper creepy. Excellent film.
