I love the diaries, particularly his personal day to day incidents. Having a cold.... complaining about prices etc. And the statement to his wife.... "lf that dog pisses on the house one more time.. l'll throw it out of the window ".....brilliant down to earth comment.His description of the fire is excellent... yes... great historical writings.

Yes! A diary written before people wrote them with the sole purpose of having them published and therefore, not very honest!

Ok, not literally, but to hear the voice of a human being who lived and breathed 364 years ago is Astonishing. I wonder what he would make or 2024? Probably the same as we would think of 1660.

This was so great for me. If you read his diary it fills in so much. I recall him saying he passed a carriage with 2 people sitting in it upright and dead If you love history do read the books. I am so grateful to those too old to read and allow us the pleasure ❤

A little note: at that period of history "dinner" was more or less equal to today's lunch. Supper was the evening meal. To dine was to eat a meal in the early afternoon, and to sup was to have what we would now call dinner.

Of course, Kenneth Branagh could read the tax code aloud and we would all be enthralled. Samuel Pepys is surpasses any government publication.

A great rendition. Thank you. I have the nine volumes which I read as an historian 40 years ago. Do read them from your library if you want a fuller version. This version reminds me of Covid except the plague was caused by rats. Certain blood groups were immune to the rat bites. Men shared beds in hotels back then. They were full of rats. Pepys was lucky. Do read his volumes, they are brilliant. Sadly with no criticism there is so much detail missing . I for one cannot see as well and bless this distributor.

As though a public library might stock such a thing! We can't even order in any of the books we ever want to read. I can just imagine their faces if we went to ask for this! Our brand new purpose built library that has just got rid of it's reference books. My daughter could not order a single psychology text book,not any original writing by Freud,Rogers, Maslow etc. it's all junk. I'm going to ask next time I'm in town just to see what they say!

Thank God England at least has Sir Kenneth Branagh. I bet he knows his history behind Changes of 1752 By that time, the discrepancy between a solar year and the Julian Calendar had grown by an additional day, so that the calendar used in England and its colonies was 11 days out-of-sync with the Gregorian Calendar in use in most other parts of Europe.

Why did they feel the need to change all the dates from British into American

@@Zwia. America is the only country foolish enough to change a perfectly fine date format into one which can’t be put in a sentence. Ie it was the fourth day of December in the year of 1955. We shouldn’t lower things to the level of ignorance.

@@keithphelps4764 Well sir, you are the ignorant one. First for labeling the richest and most powerful country in history "foolish". Ironically the ingenuity that allowed you to write such falsehoods was invented by Americans. As were much of the medical advancements keeping you alive. America never changed their date format. It was inherited from Great Britain during colonial times. The UK later changed format, maybe after Pepys diaries. Please don't let reality get in the way of your blind hatred though. I hope I am not so bitter when older.

@@Zwia. I have always admired and respected America until this year when I witnessed the travesty of justice/ democracy performed in the rigging of your American elections and installing a corrupt, brain-dead corpse into your Oval office. President Alzheimer's And what have ''the people'' done to remedy this? Nothing. Hence the ''foolish enough'' comment at the beginning of this thread , verily sticks!

Very nice but its an abridged version. History should never be abridged because that is a form of modern day revisionism. A diary is supposed to be detailed even if it appears mundane.
@stevepayne5965
@stevepayne5965 2 жыл бұрын
Easy to say it shouldn't be abridged, but Pepys's diary covers only nine and a half years and still runs to well over a million words and is published in eleven volumes. Great for Pepys obsessives like me, but most people probably want something a little more convenient.

For goodness sake! This is real history! Not some politically correct rewritten version where Shakespeare turns out to be a one legged black American woman! Do you really think that the poorest people came back to their hovel having worked from before sun up to after sun down,chewed their bit of bread and then sat down in the dark to write their diary 😂 they didn't have school, never mind light to see by or pen and paper to write with! The very act of writing a diary is an act of wealth and privilege 🤦

As far as I can tell, the company that produced most of C.D.s of the BBC content they no longer produced and sold themselves,has sold everything off to audible. Or they were bought up. Such a shame. A quick search might find you a good second hand set, I got one a couple of years ago. Unless you are abroad, that might be harder.
