I agree with the result of each situation (artists wants to do more while workers want to do less), but the difference to me, is that the artist does it for themselves, it is their own vision and decisions (and consequences), so there is low friction when making those decisions, which translates to a very enjoyable process, while a worker does it for someone else, and there is a lot of friction there, especially when those decisions go against his core values that motivated them to do what they do in the first place.

What motivated them to work isn’t some arbitrary and spiritual bullshit. It’s money. how many people do you think would work their jobs if they didn’t have to? They work because they need to survive. We are so miserable not because we don’t like taking orders, (that our nature to a degree. Weak follow the strong… that’s how our biology operates.) but simply because we aren’t made for society. Our biological bodies are made for hunting and gathering in packs of 20-30. Not for back breaking work or engineering alongside 2000 different people. We are good at adapting, but evolution doesn’t occur quickly enough to get us used to this… we evolve generations by generations and that simply doesn’t work when every generation leads a completely different life from the previous one. And each evolution to a single state of working conditions requires hundreds and even thousands of years. We are miserable because we are bored of the same bullshit over and over again. Because this isn’t what our biological bodies were made to do. People don’t hold back because the boss is gonna ask more, but because they don’t want to work in the first place. So why work harder when you aren’t even gonna get paid for it? Artist are the same. They afford more freedom, but in the end unless they can make money they won’t do their art. They get intoxicated by that freedom and get addicted to it. Reason they struggle more then other more normals jobs isn’t because they are dedicated, but because they don’t want to work their normal jobs and give up their freedom.

Wow, I'm electrical-craftsman-artist ! I absolutely love working with my hands and tools, and I'm totally absorbed in whatever I'm working on. I was incredibly fortunate to have a boss/friend for over 30 years. He (Wendell Murphy RIP, and his son Reggie) almost never gave estimates on my projects unless it was higher than he expected. I'm 72 now & still operate the same way; "it's not finished or done till it's perfect". Do what you do as if it's your own. Perfection or nothing.

Then I must be doing something wrong smh matter of fact, I know I’m doing something wrong. I cannot just clock in and coast for the day! I just can’t. I find myself adding work to my day I wasn’t even asked to do and learning things about other departments I don’t even work in. I’m a shortcuts guy, I believe if a short cut does not exist, then I must create one. I don’t use shortcuts to do less and look like I’m doing more, I use them to do more and make it look like I’m doing less. I detest lazy co workers with a passion. I detest non common sense having managers even more.

That's very broad strokes, in my opinion. I'm sure that many people give it their all, in their work. That doesn't make them an artist. The true difference between an artist and, well, a craftsman, is that an artist (in theory) has to make zero concessions. His/her/their expressions or work simply is. Period. A craftsman, a designer for example, has budgets, clients, deadlines, and more. All of these constraints are imposed.
@Magus_Union
@Magus_Union 3 жыл бұрын
Very much agree. It misses the conversation of the value of labor and the need to respect the labor as presented. Why does the worker supposedly "do less"? Because the boss doesn't respect their labor (by constantly asking for more, assuming said labor is infinite in nature). Why, then, should the worker have to sacrifice more of their time for the labor for said boss?
@gc8972b
@gc8972b 3 жыл бұрын
You have defined an artist as one who makes zero concessions, theoretical indeed, broad strokes as well and that's not a problem. Don't think Seth was trying to come up with the "true difference, period" about anything, it's just an invitation for thinking about your own place in-between two broad definitions. Aren't most people in the creative industry an hybrid of artist-worker?
@bartderuyck
@bartderuyck 3 жыл бұрын
@@gc8972b Indeed they are. It's just a strange criterion to put forth, doing "more" or "less". Since some artists even deliberately did less, notably in modernist and postmodernist art. I just don't think that the amount of effort one puts in is the defining difference. I do appreciate his point that it is limiting, in many ways, to be a "worker".
@ArtyMars
@ArtyMars 3 жыл бұрын
Tthose kinds of “designers or craftsmen” are still just employees to their clients, seth’s speaking to self employed artists or authors or youtubers or those with complete freedom to change their budget, or those who have clients that allow complete control over the project. Because they trust the person they’ve hired will deliver results that are extraordinary or remarkable, they won’t just deliver what’s expected, they’ll deliver something unique, because they aren’t a zombie like the rest of the worker bees 🐝

I think that regarding artists not holding back, i dont think that's always the case. 1. For writers it's more common to find books split into chapters having a grand total of 200-400ish pages rather than having 2, 3 or x parts within the same book (1200, 800ish pages) since they can sell the same format for a simmilar price and earn much more money , it's also a more effective format to appeal wider audiences (making it less dense). 2. Also happens in the show/cartoon industry, where specials can take up to 40 minutes to fit all the content of multiple-could-be episodes like with SouthPark's pandemic and vaccination specials which boast 40+min of content compared to the normal format of 20+minutes. Yet the episode count has steadily diminished. In conclusion, art is not based off of the amount of work intensity put into it... but off of the creative potential of the maker. Slack labor is a fact from our decisions as a society and itself a consequence of modern work load balance and outdated yet "proven" Business Administration practices

In 3rd grade, I noticed my teacher liked an illustration of a student in this book we were studying. I mirrored that character and held my hand up exactly like he did, made eye contact like I imagined he did, and put on the same smirk. She called on me every time I raised my hand. I used to raise my hand ALL THE WAY UP, until I saw a model of the behavior expected.

I think people hold back when they know their company is going to constantly ask for more with no regard for them or their wellbeing. Most people don't want to work as little as possible unless they truly hate their job. People just want to feel valued, like someone has their back and like they are a success in their role (links heavily to being valued). The failure is in the boss in that situation treating their employee like a machine.

I agree. I think that while yes there are people who give their all to a job. An artist has to give more than an employee. going the extra mile in a traditional work setting makes you look like an idiot to your peers because that Karrot you are chasing will always stay just out of reach, and causes conflict with the people who are there for just a paycheck because they become obstacles to the team giving 100%. Of course, there's nuance to each situation but this is my interpretation of what he is saying. I think he's right especially when it comes to art. It's a subjective experience to view someone else's art and determine the monetary value. It needs to be "good" to the artist if they are going to get anywhere trying to sell it to someone else, but again that's subjective even to the artist. If you know there's something you can do to make your art project better you would do that. People want "good" art and artists want fair prices for their work but exploring that subjective area is where an artist's expertise and experience come in.

Interesting doesn't sound like I've ever worked a day in my life. Understand the sensation though of trying to do as little as possible, I avoid this as much as possible. Though my job is interesting, being in software I am always asking how can i do less work but make the computer do more. And I can tell you from experience Effort in != Machine effort out. It just doesn't. You can make the computer do just as many useless things as excuses for why you didn't deliver what the boss asked for on time.

I don’t think people hold back because they think the boss is going to ask for more. It’s usually pretty easy to track employees’ performance and know if they are slacking. If I see someone underperforming, I would fire him instead of asking for more. I think this stuff is made up. Some of the self help people are wishful thinkers. They don’t have enough experience in the field as someone lets say runs a manufacturing company hiring and managing lots of workers. This guy writes books -what does he know about hiring and managing people. I don’t think he has the elbow grease to talk shop. Maybe young people would still listen to him.
