You can learn so much from animal behaviour if you don't rush to intervene. Growing up my dad was always rushing to prevent some type of interaction or other and I was pretty much the same but the other day I said to the big tortoise "Flash, move out of the way" and Chief my Rottweiler Mastiff rushed at him... back in the day I would be screaming at Chief, grabbing for his collar, afraid to let Flash walk about henceforth but I realised that he was trying to herd him out of the way by pushing him with his nose. I learned 3 things about Chief that day. He knows Flash by name. He understood me. And maybe he might make a good herding dog. Maybe.

Years ago my dad's border collie chased my indoor only cat outside. Flour had just gotten outside the door & I guess we yelled a her. Because Lady chased her clear around the yard, straight back inside & stopped smack dab on the door will. That dog never herded a day in her life. But she could tell that particular cat was indoor only from all the others around & that I was upset she got out. So she brought the cat back inside. Smart dog.

My first encounter with geese was when I was about 5. Upon arriving at my grandparents farm, as soon as the car door opened I was like a bolt of lightning headed for one of the barns - which upon entering my mom and grandmother put it best - as fast as I entered I exited about 5 times faster with two geese (who did not know me) hot on my tail! Literally! My grandmother had intended to warn me - had I taken a moment to say hi before running for the barn...but alas.... Geese - the Only animal I ever truly respected (other than the HOGS - which we were NOT allowed to go near without adult supervision..). Bulls paled in comparison to the geese and hogs... Ah, those were the days.... ;-)

I got to know geese on walks with my grandparents and in the small animal shelter pen that my riding teacher had. They were pretty devilish. Think I had at least one long discussion with one of them how I was allowed to enter the pen and feed the rabbits and guinea pigs. He wasn't a fan.

There where geese at the temple of Juno in Rome. During a siege of the city, there where Gauls trying to climb the capitol hill. While the guard dogs kept sleeping, the geese made such a ruckus that the soldiers where on time to stop the Gaulish invaders. From then on the geese of Juno where celebrated as heroes every year. Water fowl look quite entertaining to keep. A few years ago my the 8 year old nephew found out just how aggressive geese can be. We were at a park here in Auckland that's famous for its bird life and he went to feed some geese. Unfortunately he freaked out, and tried to run away from them whilst still holding the bread they had seen him with. The chase went on for a while, mainly because I couldn't remember how to say "Drop the bread." in Japanese. (The little dude hadn't picked up much English yet.)

When I was a kid we had a huge organic farm. On this farm we had geese, no gander apparently. My dad built the geese some A-Frame huts to nest in. I'm not sure why they did this. I don't remember eating them though occasionally we used goose eggs for baking. At one point though the goose eggs were piling up and they went rotten. Dad told us boys to go and clean out the nests and put glass eggs in the nests. So three boys and a couple of dozen rotten goose eggs... .what could go wrong? Dad was usually more cognizant of pending disaster, I'm surprised he missed this. The rotten goose egg fight, which became known as the great stench of '67, started innocently enough but soon we were throwing the putrid projectiles everywhere! It was awful in retrospect! The yellow gaseous cloud drifted over to our neighbors and apparently they wasted no time in phoning our parents to inquire about the source of the stench. Mom couldn't get close enough to use her wooden spoon and only a fool comes when a mother is weilding one! Thus this went down in history as the great retribution, but that is another story! 😁
