The true difference between the 2 is the Eaton has an actual manual transmission that clutches and shifts by itself depending on RPM and road speed, the Allison is a true automatic transmission like in your car or suv. Great video by the way, very informative! 👍

One thing to take a look at with the Allison pulling when “stopped” is their RELS system with the FuelSense setup. It will put the transmission in a partial neutral as long as the brake is applied and then once you release the brake it goes back into driving gear. That may be a setting they can turn on for you.

Regarding the allison that wants to keep driving at idle...the fix to that problem is to lower your engine idle rpm...down to about 600 is what we found seems to work the best...looks like it was idling at 700 in the video...give that a try you will be much happier

The hot thing in Tri-Axles up here in Upstate NY is the Allison 4700 RDS, which has 7-speeds and supposedly a deep reverse, where you actually have to give it throttle to go in reverse.

Allison is the only true automatic transmission (Torque Converter) just until now because ZF Transmissions will bring their Powerline 8 automatic transmission to the market soon. All the automated-manuals are just your typical multi-gear manual transmissions just now controlled by computers, electronics and solenoids...

I have an Allison AT545 in my '92 4700. When I stop at traffic lights she wants to go too. All the loose plastic inside the truck rattles. I only have 4 speeds, no overdrive, and I get around 9 mpg in a 24k GVW truck. Being the last generation, or possibly two generations ago my truck likes to be around 2200 rpm. I can't believe you were doing 70 mph at 1500 rpm. That's crazy! My truck is underpowered with a DT360 but it gets the job done every day with few breakdowns compared to a k3500 or F350 cab and chassis. Big hills take me down to 15-20 mph fully loaded but she makes it EVERY time with no complaints. I've never driven a heavy truck like yours and that Eaton sounds interesting. My truck is up to 265k and the Allison has never given a hassle, besides a leak where the shifter cable goes into the transmission. I love the fact that driving my medium-duty truck is like driving a car even if she is a bit of a dog. I couldn't imagine dealing with shifting all day. That would suck. It might be fun for an hour or two but not all day. The Allison I have is built like a tank, like my I4700 truck, and is very faithful. I'd have a hard time jumping ship on Allison because they're idiotproof. Simpler is better in my book. I get so much of what you're saying about the Eaton, especially watching how many speeds you have available and that option for when the truck is loaded or light. That's going to save money and make the ride more comfortable/fun. It would be a hoot to drive either of those trucks for an hour or two. That's about as heavy-duty as you can get with cold ac and a quiet comfortable cab. I hope your drivers appreciate how nice they have it.

Well, ya gotta compare apples to apples. The Eaton is basically an automated Roadranger. The equivalent in Allison would be the TC10 (available in 18 speed), which they generally don't stuff into a dump truck. You probably have a 4000 series WT. That being said, we run Transynd in all of our Allisons (WT1000, 2000, 3000) and see zero issues, and our service intervals are at about 160,000km (filter and fluid change).
@chiefkeyes5359

Indeed, Allison TC10 would definitely outperform and eaton imo and it's definitely more comparable to the 18 speed automated

There are other options for oil. As long as you use an allison approved oil the warranty will be fine. They have a list of approved oils from other manufacturers on there site. We run fleetrite brand in ours. It's a little cheaper than the trans snyd and won't void the warranty.

I don't understand why they haven't put power shift transmissions in big trucks like they have in tractors. Obviously they can handle the torque same with an ivt transmission. You'd also still have a clutch pedal like we do in big tractors. And you could have a shifting lever with a power shifter just like the tractors have. The way some have described the Easton ultrashift it sounds like a power shift

Or better yet, a 13 or 18. IMO automatics have no business being in a big truck. If you can't drive a manual, you don't belong behind the wheel and are nothing but a steering wheel holder, not a driver. Unless you've been driving a manual all your life and lost a limb and can no longer drive one, then an auto would be ok for that reason. The Allison sucks, I don't care what anyone says. My truck has been in the shop to get my tarp fixed and I've had the displeasure of driving one for 2 days and can't stand it .... what a major POS trans it is .... constantly shifts up/down when not needed and no way to stop it.

@@brianzaborowski2724 exactly, I wouldn't even consider buying a truck with a automatic transmission, I want to make the decision which gear to use in any situation not the truck. If you can't drive a stick... then learn!!

Justin, you didn't talk about the cost of the Eaton, or anything regarding its cost of upkeep. Did Eaton charge you anything for the regional service tech. to reprogram the Ultra? How soon did the tech get to you after you called? How much is the clutch replacement? You also didn't talk about how each tranny handles starting on a grade. Depending on your location, do you have difficult winters & do you use your trucks in the winter?

Good job explaining the difference of the 2 transmissions from an owner and drivers point of view. You are right about the 8LL trans. It’s fine off-road or on a site truck but the wide gaps in ratios suck for highway driving. I never understood why some many dump trucks run them. 18 sp is the most versatile.

Great video! I almost got the Allison when I ordered my Pete 7 axle. But the upfront cost and repair cost compared to Eaton Autoshift (Was the only Eaton automated manual at the time) Vs 18 speed manual made my choice easy. From watching your video the Eaton Ultrashift is so far advanced of the Eaton Autoshift it is without a doubt much better transmission. Good Luck and Keep On Truckin

I’m thinking of buying a International 7600 dump truck with a C10 cat engine and a Eaton Ultra Shift transmission. Can you tell me how well does the Ultra shift transmissions perform off road? A lot of times when getting loaded in these dirt pits the ground is very soft and these transmissions have to be strong enough to get that dump truck out of the way after getting loaded. I see a lot of drivers bogg down in the dirt pits and going uphill. Can the ultra shift perform in that kind of situation? This will be my first truck and I would greatly appreciate your thoughts?

nice vid. the allison does have a neutral. you have to shift it into neutral. otherwise the clutches will want to grab when in gear. they are way more aggro than those of a car so the pull is strong yes. if they come up with 8 or 9 gear model, i bet you these will be the new hotness for OTR

manuals are best for adverse situations. autos just cant do it. autos make drivers lazy and stupid in the same way smart phones make you forget phone numbers if they are all on auto dial. ive driven them both. i like my auto car but prefer my manual truck. auto trucks dont shift when i want to and i can control the power range its to be in. auto trucks seem to be slower and take longer to shift. maybe its just me, i got 20 plus years at it. i can skip gears much easier, i can shift faster and slower when i want to. plus it costs so much more in buying the auto and maintaining it than you can ever save on fuel. if you know how to drive and enjoy it, you prefer manual. just like most people who drive cars for sport, on or off road, want manual. if you want to cruise, auto is the way to go. shouldnt be cruising at work. but its more than that, its knowing the job to get it done better. i couldnt believe how much slower a brand new auto semi was compared to the old manuals i was driving. the autos are ok at best and even then i still had to hit the shift down button when i wanted to pass. i didnt see that on yours, the mack ive been driving has it on the dash. dont like having to reach up there to shift. would prefer is like yous if it had shifting on it still. ive driven both and i still prefer manual even in stop and go traffic cuz thats just a small part of the job. if you need to be aggressive, auto is just going to slow you down. i can change gears faster, safer and more efficiently than any auto, so far. if the tech catches up, maybe. but even in 2020 now, they still dont have what it takes. but then i get in my auto car and go home. one other thing about manual on the stick is i dont have to look at my dash when im in the yard and wiggling into a tight spot. a stick shift is like brail, i dont need to look and i can keep my eyes on where im going and what im doing. i see a big problem is just like cars. my wife cant drive my manual transmission car but i can drive her auto car. if you ever have to jump into a manual truck, you are out of luck. when it comes to hiring and you can drive manual, of course you can drive auto also. but if you only drive auto, can you drive that manual if you needed to or is it going to grind work to a halt until someone can do it for you?

Great video. At a set of lights Allison are just itching to get going. You're right, They are hard on brakes if not driven correctly. Allison do have a 10sp called the tc10 . But are uncommon atm

The auto shifts and the automatics are made for "Today's steering wheel holders". If you have someone that knows what they are doing a manual is better but finding people that know what they are doing is the hard part.

People need to undestrand that Automated Manual transmissions are not the same as Automatic transmissions. Automated Manual Transmissions are basically the same as a typical manual transmission just that cluctch actuation and gear selection is done by computers, electronics and solenoids. Allison Transmissions are the only true automatic transmissions just up until the new ZF Transmissions POWERLINE 8 arrives to the medium duty truck market soon.

cool vid. I want to know how dose it do loaded uphill? like following a bus with 20 yards on and you have to stop cuz they are letting a kid off. They take off and you are there taking off from a dead stop, will it shift gears like you would in your manual 18speed trans? or dose it hold the gear your in till you make the top of the hill? Thank you

Such as Transmissions, engines, diff's, gearing, and the list goes on. Just wondering is all. thanks for the video's your a real kick in the pants!!

great video, information and opinion is bang on. allison are great but youre exactly right they need to be 8 speed and less expensive and the service cost is too high. 13, 15, or 18 speed manual i still dont think can be beat, just way more simple, proven, less headache and theres no programming them.... as long as you have a competent driver youre set.

this is a Eaton endurant trans the ultra shift still has a clutch and both are automated! Automatic transmissions have a torque converter which will put more torque to the ground at idle, nice for soft soil!

@B we have a mack granite triaxle with the allison. We used it for plowing, normal dump operations, paving/milling as well as pulling a tag trailer with our dozer or excavators and it worked perfectly. We didn't pull the weight you put in, but was 80k. It always worked flawlessly. Only problem we ever had was a cooler line ruptured.
