I prefer cold pressed…. On another note, almost 2 years into watercolour painting, I still cannot do a circle with a brush like you can. Impressive. 👍👍

Thank you so much for this. It's super helpful! I didn't know what the differences were when I started painting again this year and just went for cold pressed. I love it as I love playing with pigment, moving and lifting and love the blooms I get . Now I know why! I'll get some hot pressed too and have a play with that.

This will help alot. Although I have cold pressed paper, it seems to be acting like it is hot pressed. i will try another brand and see if that improves my experience! Thanks so much Harriet!

Thanks for that really interesting comparison. I've always gone for cold pressed because of the textured surface but never given any thought as to why the lovely blending happens. I love the crisp edges to the circles on the CP paper whilst the variations of the centres add perspective to them......if you get my drift! 🤪 xx

Thanks for the insight, I had been wondering about this. I am very new to watercolor and thought I just needed to just jump in and start painting. I bought both hot press and cold press a few months back. I started painting with the hot press paper, well some of the paper was coming off - not pretty and I wondered what I had done wrong. I now realize I must have used too much water. Thank you.

Thanks for the comparison, however, it would be nice to see a sample of what the paint does well on hot pressed compared to cold press. I understand why you use the two for different outcomes but have yet to see what does work on hot and not as well on cold. Maybe you would consider doing it that way at some time.

that’s why I showed some pre painted examples but thanks for your comment

I have seen botanical paintings from instructors who prefer hot pressed paper and what they end up painting is a life-size, beautiful flower. They actually prefer hot pressed. I have tried both types in botanical painting and prefer the cold pressed simply because water (or paint) does not sit on top the paper. Is it since the paint sits on top of the paper, it does not dry out as quick and you can wait a few seconds before continuing onto the petal to add another color on same layer and wanting paint to meld in with other color but want soft edges where the two colors meet and then the middle of second color on same layer remains pure. This is a wet on dry instance.

I avoid using hot pressed most of the time but it is all about experimenting with what works for you.

I just pre-ordered your new book and I can’t wait for it to arrive in a few weeks since I absolutely love your other book! I do have a question about water color paper….Do you stretch your water color paper and, if you do, what method works best for you?
@deWintonPaperCo3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tracie, I'm afraid I dont and i'm not really an authority on this subject.

Then which paper is best for water colour hot pressed or cold pressed
@deWintonPaperCo3 жыл бұрын
As I say in my video they are both good for different types of watercolour painting but cold pressed is better for classic wash watercolour painting
