I love your aviary. I am very impressed by how tame your quail seem. When I come close mine run away and when I do catch one, they don't sit still at all. They flap their wings and cry. It's tragic and I hope I can get them to calm down.

Great channel, thanks for the information. Why do you have the circular fence in the corner of the run?
@BrimwoodFarm7 жыл бұрын
Four Kids and Ducks no real reason. I have zebrafinches and when the babies fledge the quail peck them mercilessly. Last year I put that little plant support in and covered in conifer branches as a little refuge. this year though I've just shut the quail out of the birdhouse so the chicks can fledge and get used to flying before encountering killer quail!

Oh my I am mind blown!!!! Great channel. I can’t wait to buy my own home so I can start growing quails. Initially I wanted to grow rabbit and chicken before I saw your channel. And those small birds are super cute, it’s like a small jungle in your backyard. seems a lot easier than chickens. Hav you ever grown chickens before? Keep up the great work!!!!!

How to save quail chicks in cold weather. As i keep them outside with a 100watt bulb, 1 or 2 die each night. And when i keep them inside my room with same light in a box, they dont die. Very hard to maintain. I brought 60 ,now ony 40 are alive
@LeonardoRodriguez-ib2gm3 жыл бұрын
The chicks are very suceptible to temperature. They need 37 C. To be comfortable. The best way to do it is with a heat lamp 150 to 200 Wats. Coul be hanged above the chicks at a distance that will produce the desired temperature. Use a good thermometer. Do not let the chicks get wet !!

I am getting some quail. I was wondering, can you feed them fresh things like lettuce, carrot shavings, you know things that are left over from preparing human food?? Like you with chickens.
@BrimwoodFarm6 жыл бұрын
You can but it depends where you live. In the UK we're not allowed to feed any kind of kitchen scraps to our birds. But they will happily eat fruit and veg.
@heavenboundhomestead1266 жыл бұрын
@@BrimwoodFarm I live in the USA. Strange why can't you feed them instead of wasting food that they would like?
@BrimwoodFarm6 жыл бұрын
You should be fine then. I don't agree with the rules at all - they say it's for food hygiene reasons but I don't think it should apply for small keepers.

Wow, they are generally not very good at hatching chicks because of the way they have been farmed for hundreds of generations that instinct got mostly bred out

I have 5, the seller said all of them are female,but, 3of them even don’t lay any eggs. I can’t find the white thing from their butts.maybe the cold weather lead they to do not lay eggs.
@BrimwoodFarm4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they tend not to lay so much in cold weather. Short day length affects them too, so you should find them laying more when the daylight increases.

@Mimers2174 жыл бұрын
Once they reach an age where their old enough to they will naturally without even any incentives, I have a female I've raised by hand solo and she lays eggs almost daily
@LeonardoRodriguez-ib2gm3 жыл бұрын

Thanks for sharing this, great video. I have a question please Can you still eat the eggs that the females lay even though they are in with the males? Will the eggs be fertile and can you still eat fertile eggs, Im thinking of getting quail for the eggs but would also like a male so every now and then we can hatch some chicks. Thanks
@BrimwoodFarm6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart, yes - you can totally still eat the eggs. It makes no difference. In fact, it's better than chickens as quail hardly ever go broody so you know the eggs won't have been sat on and incubated.
@LeonardoRodriguez-ib2gm3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can eat fertile eggs. That is the natural way. But the eggs in all birds last longer if they are not fertile, at room temperature. Of course, they have a longer life when kept in a fridge.

Hi, you said you have your quails in with your finches, do they attack the finches or are the birds safe if they land near them? Thanks for sharing your info.
@BrimwoodFarm6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michele. Yes - the quail are in with the finches and are fine with them. BUT, they DO get attracted by fluttering baby things so when my finches are breeding I shut the quail out of the indoor quarters. That means the fledglings have a chance to learn how to fly first as the quail will peck a baby to death if they have the chance.

@PurpleWaffleGamer6 жыл бұрын
If you have a female coturnix they do pretty well. I heard that from a button quail expert on @backyardchickens. For safety check on them for a couple days and make sure no fighting. Then should be fine to leave them with the cots.

I have box wood shrubs in pots and then passion flower and clematis growing through from outside. The boxwood seems pretty resistant to most birds and also grows in shade which works out well.
