Video has good explanation. Adding a little more information. Aaroh, Avroh, vadi, samvadi and chalan together create Raag. Unlike scale, Raag may have different scale in Aaroh and Avroh (Ex. major in Aaroh and minor in Avroh OR even a note is present in Aaroh but absent in Avroh etc.). When all these rules put together a bunch of notes get characteristic of Raag (a signature melody). The same bunch of notes can form different Raag just by changing Vadi, Samvadi, Chalan etc.

Good explanation. but raga is not just scale , is nt it ? because many ragas carry the same scale. then what is that which makes them different ??? Can u please clarify ?
@bansuribliss2 жыл бұрын
The scale is the sequence of notes used, generally spanning an octave. The raga is the melody. Your favorite song probably has a scale, but is much more than the scale. Same with raga. Ragas generally have alap, compositions, improvisation, jhala, Tihais etc…

@@bansuribliss Thanks for reply. When the sequence of notes form a melody,it can be said to flavours of raga as I understand . Thanks .

What is pakar in ragas? And how to play the pakars.?
@bansuribliss4 жыл бұрын
The pakar is the heart of the raga...a short phrase that encapsulated the raga. Play it if your guru taught it to you. Otherwise don’t think about it

Is scale equivalent to a thaat ? There are 10 thaats which encompass all or most of the ragas. If we consider thaat as scale then there could be multiple ragas coming out of it.
@bansuribliss4 жыл бұрын
My quick answer is that the thaats are an outdated system that one musicologist used to highlight what he considered the ten most scales important scales. I don’t find them any more important than any of the other 62 melakartas. The melakarta system is more meaningful.

@@bansuribliss thanks for your insight. I am relatively new to classical music and our school taught about thaats. If I remember correctly, melkartas are part of Carnatic system so don't know much about them... Will read about them
@bansuribliss4 жыл бұрын
The melakartas are simply the 72 heptatonic scales that can be produced through different combinations of SRGMPDNS, using all of those letters but mixing which are komal, shuddh or teevra. Example SRgmPDnS versus SrGmPdNS etc...

It doesn't hurt to know the ten thaats as they are famous. i just find them somewhat arbitrary.
