Bansuri Q & A Episode 23:
Western Classical Versus North Indian Classical Music
Some of the primary differences between Western and north Indian classical music are:
- Indian classical music focuses on melody (one instrument at a time), whereas Western music often has harmony (multiple instruments at once).
- Indian classical music has no key change
- Indian classical music has a wider variety of scales and rhythms
- Indian classical music has a drone in the background.
- Indian classical music has a consistent and unique structure while also allowing for significant amounts of improvisation.

Rather than struggle with your bansuri playing, consider becoming a Bansuri Bliss Member and gaining access to the most detailed bansuri tutorials available anywhere online, as well as twice monthly online lessons with Dr. Kerry Kriger.
Bansuri Bliss Membership gets you an array of courses in various ragas, complete with audio, video and downloadable PDF compositions. The compositions are written in clear, precise notation of a higher quality than any you will find elsewhere online (as virtually all compositions online are written in degraded notation that was altered in order to be typed, losing much of the nuance of truly correct Indian musical notation). Dr. Kriger's musical notation maintains the traditional style to the finest detail, and is visually easy on the eyes, facilitating a successful practice session.
Bansuri Bliss Membership also gets you direct access to Dr. Kriger through a free introductory private lesson upon signing up, and two online group lessons every month (group size is small enough that you can always ask your questions and get replies).
Membership is only about fifty cents per day. Is your bansuri playing and musical future worth fifty cents per day? If it is, you will not find any better place online to learn bansuri.

Dr. Kerry Kriger studied with one of India's greatest flute masters (Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao) from 1999-2008 and has been studying, performing, recording and teaching bansuri since 1996.
##############################
Pitch:
Dr. Kriger's flute is Sa (three holes closed) = F (+8 cents). Listen to the video, then play it on your flute regardless of what size or pitch flute you have. Just tune your tanpura to three holes closed on your flute and use the same fingering as shown in this video.
################################
Private Lessons:
Indian classical music has been passed down through the guru-shishya parampara (teacher-student tradition) for thousands of years. KZbin videos are great for getting information to you, but only a real teacher can give you the feedback you need to ensure you are actually playing correctly. And it is assured that without a guru, you are NOT playing correctly; that is simply an inherent universal musical truth. None of your favorite Indian classical musicians learned exclusively through KZbin. ALL of your favorite Indian classical musicians had gurus who gave them in-depth personal training.
Email contact@bansuribliss.com if you are interested in private online lessons with Dr. Kerry Kriger.

How do you differentiate carnatic n Hindustani
@bansuribliss
@bansuribliss 2 ай бұрын
Great question! There is plenty of overlap. Carnatic flutes have Sa at two holes closed and bansuri has Sa at three holes closed. Hindustani Sangeet has more improvisation and Carnatic more composition. There are lots of other differences...

Cool! Indian classical music works in a modal system structure and western classical music uses a tonal and post-tonal structure with a tempered scale.
