i can only speak for east coast US construction, but the screw on the right with the tapping head (think tap and dye) on the end is referred to a "self-tapper" or tek screw

Lots of people call fasteners different things. If you go by the book, these are technically the correct terms.

Public Service Announcement: Self Tapping Screws are the ones you don’t need to drill a hole. Self Drilling Screws are the ones with thread all the way to the tip.

Names are backwards. The screws that go straight through metal are the self tapping. Literally says it on every box of them we use at work.

Great question, there’s a lot of variables so it’s hard for us to give a 100% answer. (Weather, weight, patio material, aluminum thickness, etc) I’d consider using blind pop rivets or self tapping screws. The more fasteners used, the more secure it will be. What drill setting are you using? My self drilling screws are taking ages to make a hole. Im using the screw setting with torque at 4 on the drill. Should i use the drill option instead?

Drill option might help. Not sure where you got your screws from, issue might be with those or the material your going into. Hope that help, thank you for watching!

This is dumb, a light tap to the “self-tapping screw” would show it to drill easily. More pressure would work too but it won’t work as well
