Don't know what country you are in - Aus ? Here in the UK the pozidrive (PZ) is far more popular than phillips. They are better as the have extra flutes between the 4 main wings - similar to phillips but the extra flutes give more head-driver contact. Although the bits look similar they are not really compatible between phillips and pozi as the phillips bit will not fit in a pozi screw well. At the moment Torx (star) screws are becoming more popular. The square drive you mentioned is a 'Robertson' scew named after the inventor a Canadian engineer. Don't see them in the UK unless you buy from specialist suppliers but they are apparently pretty good.

In the UK we have PZ screws, they look like Phillips to the untrained eye, but actually have 8 contact points. most people don't know this and so they use the wrong bit on their driver and it rounds the pz head off.

I’ve been wondering what those drill attachments were for in my attachment kit. Also I find sometimes the speed of the drill and using wrong setting can have big impact on attachments.

Hi Bill, Great info. I am trying to joint a 45mm timber board with a 35mm steel square tube parallelly. Is it better to drill from the wood to the steel or the otherway around? Also what should be the length of the screws. 75 mm good enough?. I will be using the self drilling screw as you demonstrated. In general when you are pre drilling, what should be the drill size compare to the screw guage inorder to create a tight bond without splitting the timber?
@diytfnot3074 Жыл бұрын
Great video although I’m sure the self tapping screw is the pointed one with a notch in the thread and the screw shaped like a drill bit is actually a ‘self drilling’ screw. Can anyone confirm please?
@nick4leader10 ай бұрын
I believe so, the self tap is only meant for tapping threads in existing hole vs self drilling will drill the hole and tap the threads

Great video. I have a question: what will happen if I use wood screw against a steel plate? I am drilling my pull up bar. Just realized my door frame is made of steel.
@billshowto3 жыл бұрын
It won’t go through the steel. Create a pilot hole first and you should be able to get it through 👍👍

If you're trying to drill a screw in stainless steel I'm assuming you would need another stainless steel screw to use that way nothing rusts. But do you think you could tell me what type of screw I would need something short to put into a stainless steel beaker?

Use the metal self tapping screw
@jesterraj4 жыл бұрын
prefer the metal screws for roof sheets to wood rafters......the sharp tip ones tend to woble before catching.
@crazyrees234 жыл бұрын
So you use metal screws if you are screwing through metal to wood?
@jesterraj4 жыл бұрын
@@crazyrees23 yep there are the metal to wood ones and metal to metal....
@albertbatfinder52402 жыл бұрын
Might be worth pointing out that the screws with a head, like the button screw, are designed for when you want the screw to hold something down, like a sheet of metal for example.

Super helpful man. Can you confirm if I wanted to screw some plywood to that steel post you screwed into. I would use the same screw you used? I know, im an idiot lol. So steel self tap screw through the wood?
@billshowto4 жыл бұрын
We are all forever learning. Self tapping metal screw for going into wood the metal will work fine 👍
@muntee333 ай бұрын
The Phillips heads are nit one size fits all. Match the driver to the head and its night n day easier to not strip em out or slip out of em. Also, make sure its actually a Phillips head and not the other type that closely resembles it but has the other little grooves at 45° in each quadrant

The amount of times I've cut up my hands or ruined whatever I'm doing with a flat head by either the drill slipping from the screw groove is ridiculous. THOSE THINGS SHOULDN'T EXIST 🙄

You're overstating the issue with the slotted screw that you're calling a flathead screw. Incorrect terminology. It requires the proper driver and a sane person to drive it properly.
