Welcome to episode #64 of "On the Job." In this video, Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Dr. Energy Saver takes us to a home in Connecticut, where Dr. Energy Saver was called in right after the house was audited and sealed through a state sponsored energy conservation program: the Connecticut Home Energy Solutions (HES) Program. The purpose of this video is to show the differences between the work performed by these state-hired contractors and the work executed by Dr. Energy Saver technicians.
Many states offer similar energy conservation programs, where contractors are hired by the state to perform home energy audits and improve energy efficiency through air sealing and insulation procedures at little to no cost to the homeowner. The contractors will usually spend a few hours in the house, measure air leakage by performing a blower door test, air seal the most accessible leakages, and issue a report. The state will pay them based on the reported rate of air leakage reduction.
In most cases, no further test is ever performed, so it is quite common to find reports with overestimated reduction rates, as this particular case shows. When Dr. Energy Saver performed the blower door test, they found a much higher air leakage rate than the report stated.
In this episode of "On the Job," Larry walks us through all the important and significant details that were overlooked by the program contractor, including things like bathroom and drier vents venting straight into the attic -- where they not only create an energy problem but also a mold and moisture problem.
Other grossly overlooked details included poorly sealed and insulated ducts running through the attic, no air sealing around can lights, insufficient attic insulation, and many architectural features that demanded special attention in terms of air sealing and insulation.
While this specific attic was especially challenging due to the way it was built, the vast majority of homes have similar details that tend to be overlooked in state-sponsored programs because a thorough energy efficient retrofit can never be performed in a few hours. It usually takes days of hard work and attention to detail.
When homeowners call for an energy audit, they are usually trying to make their homes more comfortable, save money on utilities, or both. Unfortunately, in many cases, the state-sponsored work accomplishes neither because it is just not thorough enough. You are not paying for the audit or the work, but you will still be overpaying for heating and cooling, because the energy problem isn't fixed.
By having a Dr. Energy Saver technician perform a thorough home energy audit and a complete home energy efficiency retrofit, you will be making a one-time investment on effective solutions that will pay for itself in energy savings alone in about 6 years, and after that you will still have extra money in your pocket for as long as your house stands -- all while living in a comfortable, healthy and energy efficient home!

All it takes is one lazy employee that doesn't feel like crawling close to the eave to give you a lousy job.

What your not telling them is the contractor is limited to what the audit tells him to do from the energy company they are only gonna do what theyre told if they go further none of them will stay in buissness due to taking so many loss's on material n cost smh im sure theres plenty of shotty contractors as there is any feild but not all state funded cintractors are bad what a clown

Preach it, Larry! A great example of why utility audit programs don't actually save money or energy, let alone solve problems. We work the same way.

you're basing your claim off one example of one house and one contractor who obviously cut corners. I do state funded weatherization work and I can tell you the post follow up inspections are strict and they do check blower door numbers pre and post so you can't make up numbers. you guys probably charge a lot of money for the work to be done while the state is virtually free. I would agree there are bad contractors out there but there are good ones as well funded by the state. homeowners just need to do research and find a good one. I also have enough experience to know that there is no way you got the post blower door to the exact cfm of the house in question. I have done thousands of blower doors and sealed everything in the attic and basement and sometimes you can never get close to the bas. I don't question the quality of your work but it's wrong to assume state funded contractors are bad and the auditing is bad. believe it or not we do good work as well and charge less...

Why charge less and leave money on the table? You don't want to retire and plan on working at 90 years old. You should at least be at the average price.

If you have a vapor barrier on the attic floor , can you still air seal using spray foam?

So I emailed trying to Dr. Energy saver to come out. They said there were no dealers in the area. There’s a Dr. Energy Saver less then 10 miles from my house. It’s literally in the next Town over. What gives? If you guys don’t want the work. Give me a price for the foam block for decking or to attach to the bottom of the joists. I’ll do the install I just need the product.

By sealing the can lights in the ceiling...do you not cause a "over-heating" issue by not allowing the heat from light to dissipate somewhere.

DigitalRaider1 That's why they use rockwool covers that are fireproof, there's also an air gap between the cans and the covers. As for excessive heat, I have personally switched all of my lighting to LED, mind you LED does get warm but not like incandescent or halogen lighting.

How would I get in touch with this company. I went through a state program. I’m suffering from nose bleeds, allergies and constant stuffy noses. Excessive amount of gray dust on a daily bases. I have to thoroughly clean my home twice a week from so much dust accumulation. I’m exhausted and depressed from this ordeal. I believe it’s coming from the attic and chimney. My floors seem to always be dirty. I can’t figure this out. No one walks on the floor with shoes. Always bare or sock feet. My kitchen stove and fridge has dust for days. Even tho I just cleaned it the day before. Please help!!

@Chelsea Gallo, I 've had some of the medical issues you describe--plus red, irritated, swollen eyes, itchy skin and trouble breathing. There was cellulose insulation in the attic and the areas around the plumbing, electrical penetrations and chases were not sealed. The cellulose insulation was coming into the living quarters through these unsealed spaces. I would be reading in bed and my glasses would fog up and there was always a strong smell like floor outgassing. I just had a company, IES, vacuum out all the cellulose insulation, seal around all the penetrations and then blow in JM fiberglass, non-formaldehyde insulation. I can definitely see and feel a big difference. I think that company, IES, left the state utility program as they didn't want to take short cuts on their work. They were very thorough and conscientious. I was able to watch them work and at conclusion, I was supplied with before and after pictures. I think I got my money's worth though they didn't come cheap, but my health and well being is paramount. I feel your pain, and suggest you get in touch with a company in your area that deals with indoor environmental issues. Perhaps, Google is your friend (GIYF).

Larry this video is offensive. You are praying on customers. There are many contractors which provide full service retrofits. The state program requires a DOE home energy score, post inspections, and verification of proper install. The visit is 4 to 6 hours and the insulation and windows are not installed the same day. Full home energy retrofits take days as you state here. Your video however is very misleading.
