As much as I agree with your assessment of this clip and of Discovery in general, I believe this was not meant to be mean spirited, but to be comedic. It failed, due to how the situation was handled. I watched it a few times to be sure, and the situation presented seems to be one of an inexperienced captain dealing with a serious discipline problem back before Kirk's time. He went over her head and people were basically not enlightened yet. The problem is that they portrayed the guy as somewhat picked on and misunderstood with the captain being impulsive and short tempered. I think for this to work as comedy the captain needed to be more of a role model, with the scientist just being a loose cannon.

@Han Lockhart Because SJW characters don't need to demonstrate competency or exhibit the traits that would earn them their positions. They are just snarky cunts who somehow got to a high position. Just like the captain in Discovery, and just like Holdo in The Last Jedi. Kirk and Picard demonstrated just how competent they were every episode whether they dealt with crazy threats like the Romulans and Metron. Or whether they dealt with lighthearted issues like the Tribbles and their inter-crew relations. Roddenberry and the show runners of TNG actually knew what they were doing, these modern ideologically obsessed writers are rubbish. I mean look at the casting of the STD chick. She looks like a 26 year old blogger, not someone who would have reached the fucking rank of Captain in Starfleet. Granted Kirk started a little young in the original series, but both Shatner and Stewart excuded the maturity of journeymen naval officers. The Discovery captain looks like someone fresh out of the academy. The new producers and writers couldn't give a damn about Star Trek. Even the look of the new series is hideous. The green screen is shit, and the colors are so flat and shallow. The original shows had a grittiness to the visuals that was still very colorful. It perfectly fit the adventurous, wild west of the stars look that the series exuded. Star Trek died a long time ago, its corpse is just being paraded around by incompetent assholes now.

Man, that whole Discovery thing really reminded me of the command of the submarine I served on, belittling people, never listening while just talking down to them, and generally just passing off the blame to the lower ranked instead of the leaders. As a Captain, it's your job to ensure people are developing and being engaged with properly across your entire ship, either through direct leadership on a submarine or small ship, or through several high ranking officers on a larger ship. If you have multiple failures, sailors who commit crimes, or more people leaving than staying in, then that is a direct reflection of the Captain and the way they run a ship.

Ramadi, 2006-2008. I was an infantry team leader (weapons squad). I was essentially the squad leader, though, as well as both team leaders, as the other team leader and the squad leader were both lazy, and frankly, a lot like the "captain" from Discovery. I quite literally took cues from Picard. Before the deployment, I got to know the men I had, figured out what they were good at, and set them loose to accomplish the tasks they could handle on their own, then worked with them so they could improve in the areas they were weak in. We gained a reputation within the battalion for our proficiency. Over time, much of my squad was broken up, and I was given "newer" "lower quality" soldiers (actually veterans who'd had shitty leadership the entire time). I repeated the process. The squad retained its reputation despite getting the "shitbags". One of them had a particularly atrocious reputation, and within two weeks of being assigned to me, was recognized for his skill by the theater sergeant major. I wasn't an amazing NCO on my own. I had an amazing squad. But they were amazing because I took cues from Picard in this scene (naturally, not the broccoli one later), used them where they were useful, and trained them where they were not. Incidentally, we were significantly less toxic as a unit than the majority of our peers. We did have a few rivals. Incidentally, those rivals had leadership that was very similar in thought and action to me. Several of those I know watched TNG. What Picard said works, even in a very difficult combat environment. Incidentally, what Captain Gender Studies said typically ends up the way it did for H. Jon Benjamin, but for more people.

One of the big differences between Old Trek (pre-2000s) and New Trek (post-09) is the quality of writing. Back then, characters were written as mature, disciplined human beings who knew how to do their jobs, while the immature were written as inexperienced and naive but given arcs to improve and develop. While the characters being written now are just children in adult bodies, whining and complaining about their situations and feelings, and then being rewarded for it. But another issue is how New Trek uses political agendas as well. Men are portrayed as idiots and immature, either weak or toxic for being strong, while women are portrayed as strong and independent, yet also expressing how oppressed they are, even though they have high positions of power. While Old Trek did have politics in its shows and characters, it was done so with great writing that never pointed at the audience and told them that they are the bad guys and should feel terrible about themselves. But the biggest difference above all between Old and New Trek is how they portray humanity in the far distant future. Old Trek was trying to showcase the best of humanity and of what we COULD be. New Trek is just about taking humanity as it is now and putting it in the far future, showcasing the worst.

It is established that a Starfleet Captain is an exceptional individual only chosen if they reach a certain standard. I agree these would be fine traits to posses in a parody or some satirical comedy. I didn't like Discovery much, but I still remember that basically everyone outside the Enterprise, Starfleet or not, was multiple levels below the quality of skill and character than what was normal on the Enterprise.
