Oh man, you go to the point directly... We maintain two C4FM nodes with direct DMR connection via YSF2DMR and the cost is many many times down and with the use of Raspberry Pi their down time is near zero... We are connected to Brandmeister DMR with Yaesu gear and use Digital APRS at the same time with a special version of YSF2DMR..

Hey Manuel, I would love to pick your brain on this. I am working on linking DMR and YSF myself. I am running an YSF Reflector and we have a BrandMeister TG. Right now I have an RF link between the two, but, would like to eliminate that if possible. If you are willing, shoot me an email, I am good on qrz.com (KE7DUX).
@ya837
@ya837 5 жыл бұрын
Ethan, to link DMR and YSF you only need a PI-STAR image and a HotSpot. I improve the code to use Digital APRS and other functionality... So you only need a Raspberry Pi, a cheap chinese modem from Aliexpress and a microSD card with PI-STAR image. You can follow several tutorials. You can get the image here: www.pistar.uk/ Good Luck!!! 73s Manuel EA7EE

Sorry Ethan, but I misunderstand your question. YSF2DMR allows you to access DMR TG with Yaesu gear and a Hotspot, but It don't link an YSF room to a DMR TG. You need a special plug-in software to install into the master DMR server, you only need software and permission of your local Master Server maintenance people.
@pnwgeek
@pnwgeek 5 жыл бұрын
@@ya837 thank you for your reply. No, I think I misunderstood your first post, it is not your fault. I was thinking you were using the Pi-Star software to do the linking yourself, and not the master server. Right now, I have a link, but it is a physical RF link which introduces delay. We have submitted a linking request to the US Brandmeister team, but it has been over a month for response, so, we have been experimenting with our own solutions.

I've always been confused between the relationship of WiresX and Fusion. I was finally told activating WiresX is nothing more that being handed the remote control to a TV whereas Fusion is the TV. WiresX is only the control system to the sub menu and for changing rooms, it's not not a mode. What do you think of this analogy?
@K6UDA
@K6UDA 5 жыл бұрын
I love the analogy. Yes, the mode is C4FM. The Fusion component makes it possible for digital and analog radios to play nice together and WiresX is the internet component that lets us connect over greater distance than a local repeater.

No matter how many “introduction” or “beginner” videos I watch on wires x/ fusion/dstar/dmr, nobody can explain what it is, and what it’s for. Chat room? Do I need internet? Or more importantly, if I do need internet to get it set up....will it still work when the Gov shuts down the inter webs?

@@EnuffsEnuff318 Good point. I have been researching DMR, Wires X (which is kinda the same thing as System Fusion I think, but maybe not??), Dstar, C4FM (maybe the same as fusion/wires X??) and all I can find is how people send messages, pictures, voicemails, texts, and talk....kinda like a cell phone, except with radios. This would be pretty cool as a backup to cell phones except for one thing....you need the internet to connect to a "node" or "hotspot"....even if you tap into a digital repeater, that repeater is hooked into the internet. So.....if SHTF and society had a collapse, which is why a lot of us got into ham radio, and ATT, Spectrum, Comcast...etc...aren't cranking out internet anymore because of zombies/libs...whatever, digital shit will be just radio to radio to repeater maybe? Sounds a lot like U/VHF. I honestly think it's just an old school chatroom for people into ham, and they use their radios, so they feel like it's different than an AOL chatroom in 1995. What am I missing?? Ham is vast, and lots of people are bored with certain aspects. Some QRP guys think 50 watts is lame....so, what do I know?

I'm glad that you explained the Round Room - I saw the term used somewhere in the Wires-X software menus and it was not explained. Also, if you have repeater with a Wires-X room, how does the repeater owner make their Wires-X repeater room available for connections? Many of the repeater rooms (room xxx-RPT as a generic example) don't answer and connect (displays a no answer message in Wires-X) when I try to connect within Wires-X; however, I finally connected to 1 repeater room and talked on it. At least I know that my side of the connection is working.

So I have both, wiresx with Hri200 and several hot spots for ysf. For two weeks i placed both wiresx and YSF onto a large number of nodes each. After two weeks what I came up with is there are a lot of nodes on both systems but 98% of these nodes has ZERO activity. For Yaesu it seems there are like 5 channels that has some action everyday and both WiresX and YSF are connected on these 5 nodes. For me, wiresx was a very expensive mistake and a nice hotspot will give you a ton more usable options and save you a ton of money. One more thing I found funny is a lot of Yaesu users are cross-mode to DMR or D-Star and use these modes on hotspot where they told me they almost never use ysf as no one is on any nodes except for America-Link. I wonder if there will be more activity when the FT-3DR ever gets released. I have and use FT2DR but the one I grab most the time is the FT 70DR.

Can a 'Node' be created using the HRI-200 bridged thru the internet AND without a FT-100 (Or other dedicated Yaesu Radio.) radio? I am able to connect to Wires X on a local repeater with my FT-991A. However, many repeaters lock out rooms. I can use my Pi-Star HotSpot to connect to other rooms of my choice by switching the host/reflector. Nice video! Maybe I didn't listen close enough, if so sorry. For Wires-X node you also need to dedicate a Windows computer to run the wires-X software. Maybe you have a shack computer that can also run Wires-X, fine but don't let it go to sleep or hibernate. Make sure Wires-X is entered in the start-up list so when the system reboots after a Windows update, Wires-X is restarted, and make sure auto-login is enabled so it doesn't set there for a day or two waiting for you to log in. I guess if you are in your shack frequently that is less of an issue. Ymmv of course. Again, thanks for the video! 73, Ken W0KAH

Another good and very informative video by K6UDA, although I have to slightly disagree on the cost part. For analog setup, you really do not need a Yaesu radio for WIRES-X. It works just fine in the room where my affiliate club stations are connected.

@@K6UDA Not everyone in our group have C4FM radios. That is why our repeater is still in AMS mode and our node stations here in Calgary are still in analog configuration. But in terms of WIRES-X I haven't encountered any restrictions going to any WIRES-X rooms. Also being analog did not stop us from communicating with other digital WIRES-X stations (at least in the room we are using).

@@K6UDA I would also like to add that since we are still in analog, our WIRES-X stations currently have no remote room management using C4FM radios. Thanks for posting. ( good video) your use of the terme"gateway" is confusing in the wires-x context. - Yaesu have suggested for wires-x the nameing protocol that a gateway is a "high powered node with good antenna and coverage" as opposed to the 20mw setup. This is helpfull in knowing if the "node" is got good general coverage in an area or is more for personal use around ones house I run a high power Wires-x node (Gateway) + room ( been running for some 4 years 24/7/365 now) and have yet to get my head around the interconnect into other networks. - I would like my room to be able accept D-Star cpable networks and analogue ( eg allstar and the like) as well as the native C4FM System Fusion connections and associated networks.

Alexa is missing the point that you made that with a 300 FTM100 and an HRI-200 you can make a node that has the coverage of a repeater. $295.00 Radio and $125 for the HRI-200. Not 7-8 hundred. And you can drive all over the county and use it. Or if you are content to be tied to that same radio then yes with the new firmware (without the need for the HRI-200) you can make a node, talk on that same radio at the same time etc etc. All without port forwarding that the HRI-200 requires. The video on youtube under "Yaesu official" explains all that. All in all you did a pretty fair and honest evaluation.

I wouldnt really compare it to a repeater. The internet goes down and the entire setup is useless. Not just that it looks interesting to setup but what's really the purpose? When you have cellular hotspot in your vehicle or even the internet at your QTH you'll still have access to the same stuff with an MMDVM hotspot but even better because with that hotspot I can cross modes and also use different digital radios besides fusion with it. Personally I feel it's useless and a waste of money. Another guy had mentioned the same thing Ive been thinking. Most of the nodes/rooms out there are completely idle with zero activity. Please explain to me what I'd have to gain by buying a wiresx HRI box vs just using a hotspot? Unless you have a Fusion repeater site I really dont understand what the purpose is.

That is still a little confusing! It sounds like WiresX is tied to YSF systems that are physically connected to a radio and a WiresX box, not YSF network nodes that havd no physical connection to a radio and a WiresX box. For example, an XLX Reflector could be built with only a Linux computer running Debian that is connected to the Internet, not physically connected to a WiresX box and not physically connected to a radio. If I'm understanding it correctly, if you're using a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro, then the WiresX button on a Yaesu FT5DR will work with the YSF network modes that has no physical connection to a WiresX box and no physical connection to a radio, because the WiresX functionality on the Yaesu FT5DR radio is coming from the Sharkrf OpenSpot4 Pro hotspot. So, the functionality of the WiresX button on the Yeasu FT5DR then depends on if the YSF reflector is physically connected to a WiresX box and physically connected to a radio, OR if the Yeasu FT5DR is connected to a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro through a Wifi network connection. If that is true, then the WiresX button on the Yeasu FT5DR will get a more complete list of YSF Reflectors if you are using a SharkRF OpenSpot4 Pro with your Yaesu FT5DR radio.

Will the radio connect to my cell phone being used as a hotspot (just like my laptop does) or do I need something in between? If I need something in between, What do I need? Can I just use my laptop to connect to the repeater via voip, and just leave the radio out altogether when I'm out of town?
@K6UDA
@K6UDA 5 жыл бұрын
Provided the repeater has a wiresX room and a gateway to either a YSF or FCS reflector, you'll need some sort of spot (openspot, zumspot, rugged spot) connected to your iPhone or hotspot.

I understand from a hotspot you can access ysf only not wires x unless a ref is bridged to YSF. So, if you are on wires x can you access ysf or is that only possible if the wires x room is bridged to YSF?
@K6UDA

If I'm on WiresX, I can access YSF reflectors that have a gateway hook into Wires. If I'm on my hotspot, I can access YSF reflectors. All of them. Some of them are gateways to wiresX.

Thanks for the video. I have several Yaesu with wires. I just bought a 991 and have been looking for a good way to get on digital voice. I guess I’ll will use a hotspot for a while and switch out some radios to go with a new ftm-400xdr. Is there any word of maybe a software upgrade for the 991/991A to hook straight to computer to run your own node?

I was led to believe that there will never be a way to use the 991A as a digital device that can connect to the HRI-200. Crazy, I know, but that was from Yaesu technical support. Remember, you also need a PC.

Bonjour, I have two questions : - What increases the cost from 140€ + 300€ (the cost of the piece plus a FTM 100) to 700 or 800$, the fees for the inscription to Yaesu network ? - are the non HAM able to connect via btw Brandmeister system in France, and thus would we find such 14FRSxxx accessing via PMR frequencies ? Sincerly yours
@K6UDA
@K6UDA 5 жыл бұрын
I'm going to use US dollars for this. Let's assume you want to run an HRI-200 based node. HRI-200 cost $125.00, FTM-100 as a node control radio. $300.00, Then you need a radio to talk to your repeater. Let's add an FT2DR for another $300.00. Thats a grand total of $725.00. Swap that FT2DR out for an FTM-400 and you just spent a little over $800 USD I don't know anything about non hams from France accessing the system.

Wow, you did more in 15 mins to put into English than Yaesu did in their 3 hour presentation and volumes of online description , which was basically confuse their customers and potential customers. Also I have yet to find a forum or KZbin , other than yours , that does nothing more leave you with a blank stare. I have my general Lic, an avid VHF/UHF, a degree in Computer Science and mathematics ... lived through the process of using D-Star and getting my TGIF Hotspot to work. After that I was convinced that if Digital remains this company specific proprietary and god for bid make it more complex , confusing and more costly it’s going to die. Thank you Yaesu for making that world more complex , confusing and costly. I was really wanting to expand into more digital and not going to DMR too confusing and difficult to program for me. Heck , DMR looking good compared to this. Maybe I am totally wrong , maybe Yaesu and most descriptions on the internet can’t explain a logical description and need for Wires-X. Wires-X, C4FM, Fusion , nodes , PC (I own a Mac), extra radio, more money...going backwards here like the internet before HTTP. I heard someone call Fusion ‘ConFusion’. Now I understand that statement . Great channel love your work and thank you for taking on this challenging topic.

Thank you! Excellent video. I'm still a bit confused about the differences between the Node box and the Wires X cable. Do you still need 2 radios (one for the 'wire' Wires X node, and one for the client)? Or does the 'wire' Wires X node radio have access to the Wires X network directly? Also, can you access the Wires X network directly from the software running on the computer?

I just recently bought a FT3D and I'm thinking about getting the WiresX cable. Any thoughts on that? When I push the WiresX button it starts transmitting right away. I think its because I don't have that cable and doesn't know what to do. I love the radio so far.

Pushing the wires button tells the radio to push out a digital signal to the fusion repeater or wiresX node in the area. If your in range, it'll give back a list of places you can go from there.
