Sometimes, a cult is a state of mind. Families often reject and condemn opposing or questioning beliefs.

Being a atheist in South Africa is hard, because everyone around me is highly religious and literally twitch when the hear I'm a atheist. I only know 2 people that's atheists. Worst is that they tell me that I am doing my boy unjust by not baptizing him and teaching him about religion. My point of view is when he is at the age of reason, he can choose what to believe.

Hemant, my parents are fundamentalist Christians. It occurred to me to ask my mother a couple years ago whether she had any friends outside her church, and she admitted that (aside from my siblings and me) she only associates with people inside her "fellowship." Then she added they do business in her church the same way. Not that she wants to leave, but she couldn't without fear of losing almost everyone in that isolated world like her hair stylist, her accountant, and even her doctor.

It really depends on how the person lives his (or here her) Christian faith. I'm Christian in France and in my religious education, I was raised with the respect of others, the rejection of judgment (a lot of people forget that Jesus teaches not to judge each other), and benevolence. Thus, growing, I have a lot of friends, colleagues outside the church. And I do not believe because of fear. I believe because the God of the Bible really touch me. What I'm trying to say with a lot of clumsiness is that all Christians do not live their faith in the same way. I do not recognize myself in your mom's life and maybe your mom's life will not recognize herself in mine. The only consistent basis of the Christian faith is the Gospel and the Bible. How the people live the message of Jesus can vary between the 2 billion Christians.

I think that the only thing that can be surely a Christian behavior is the fact to love God by loving" your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22, 37-40) and with a real love through disinterested charity, kindness, and non-judgment. For the rest, we have to be careful to separate what really comes from the Bible and what is more the peculiarity of a community. What is, I admit, really difficult.

So what you are telling me is your mother is part of a cult. That isn't what Christianity even teaches you just saying... Your mother is a bit of an idiot. You see the fact that she goes along with that belief structure and has been for so many years the whole "But she couldn't without fear of losing almost everyone" statement is hilariously stupid. Her hair stylist? Really? Get a new one.... Accountant... oh no so rare... Doctor... hell there is only 1 Doctor in existence right? Guess the apple doesnt fall far from the tree does it.

Yes, that's an example of what cult leaders tell you to believe. Back in the time of "Jesus" there were lots of savior messiahs preaching on one hill or another. It's probably a bit harder to get your flock to believe nowadays. If a "true messiah" were to appear today, how long would it take this guy to get himself locked up in a mental ward?

Anthropologically speaking, there is no difference. It's mainly our perception of good or bad, such as sacrifice of another human is perceived as bad in modern times. I've asked my Religions professor about this because I was curious. Your definition isn't accurate because you say that only those who are in the cult know everything of their belief, but if you are an outsider you know very little. All cults are religions, but not all religions are cults you can say. Personally I don't differentiate between the two, because there are so many negative behaviors to religions, especially the monotheistic ones, that lean towards cult like behavior in the sense that they will alienate those who oppose their rule and belief.

While I can appreciate that you aren’t bigoted enough to declare all religions bad. And even know that there are polytheistic ones, I would tell you you are wrong in the sense that believing that monotheistic religions are cult like just on the assumption that your belief of a religion is organized religion when in reality religion is an individual’s beliefs. I’m quite surprised this has not picked up more in the western world considering how much we value individualism instead of group dynamics. One annoyance I’ve always had is when people try to tell Christian’s what they can and can’t do when they’re not Christian (example: some redditors telling me I can’t play dungeons and dragons because it “glorifies paganism” when it’s a role playing game. You can do whatever you want in D&D and there’s even Paladins in the game. You can scrub it of “paganism” and it’s still the same). Additionally these people will accuse us of cherry picking beliefs when in reality people are just going along with their own moral compass. What’s wrong with being part of a group and disagreeing with the group? Most people within my religious group is fine with others who believe things outside of their beliefs and are still just as welcoming. I’m not gonna force anyone into “researching” or anything but it’s good to think beyond what you know.

Anthropology is a pretty big joke of a field. I mean really if you are going to study ancient cultures you have to pick one.. Anthropology to me is the study of our genome and ancestry on a species level.... When people say its societies etc etc... its kinda hilarious as all of those things are broken up into numerous fields in modern time... why would it make sense to group them up for ancient people... That would be like saying Sociology and Biology should be combined into one field when applied to modern humans.... Than again the current educational institutions are more or less there because well capitalism and usually provide very little actual information.. as well.. we live in the information age and most of the information you can get will be available on the internet...

Every single religion is a cult. They start off as cults and acheive religions status when they have enough followers. The criteria this man lists are literally non existent and things they made up to qualify as a cult. The defenition though is going to show you that all religions started as cults Common sense also dictates they started as cults.. do you think magically everyone was christian catholic Muslim etc?? Naw lets be real you dont think that much.. many religious people do not think that much or are unable to have complex thought .. i dno.. they are literally unable to properly question things and prefer the comfort in false answers to the excitement of solving mysteries... All I can say is... Look up the evil history of the major 3 which mormons come from the same monothestic god that ruined our planet. You do understand that the monothestic god has been causing the longest ongoing wars in our planets history. Not to mention the crusades... hell do not forget the attempted genocide against pagans... Fucking dirty monotheistic slave is all I see when I look at anyone that follows an ideology based off the major three.

I don't know man, by this definition of "letting you leave" Heaven's Gate wasn't a cult. You were allowed to leave, no problem. Some people left, and they still even kept contact with those who didn't leave. There was no enforcing of anyone's presence there, you were free to join and free to leave with zero consequences. The leaders famously helped the "defectors" to book a flight and get to the airport to make sure they got back home safely. You were only there if you wanted to be and you were not cut off from the group if you left. I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't say that one was a cult. Meanwhile leaving some established religions in your community can lead to severe social shunning, whether mandated explicitly or not.

*The Differences Between Cults And Religions* Hemant Mehta, What you’ve arguing appears, in my mind, to be nothing more than distinctions without a difference. Why? Because, and speaking specifically about Christianity, the average Christian will say they only go to the location for fellowship. I.e., they are of the Body of Christ and ultimately get their marching orders from God whose word is revealed in their Holy Scriptures. Now when you examine these _orders,_ the things about cults apply-as the dictates come from On High. Examples: “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.” -2 Corinthians 6:14 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” -Matthew 10:37-39 "My personal relationship with the Lord Jesus." “Once saved always saved.” “The Bible says it; I believe it; that settles it.” Hemant Mehta, you only need ask this question: If a member of a cult, at the end, does not follow the dictates of the cult order/leader-drinking the poison, say-was it not, then, a cult? So Christianity is, at the widest and highest level, ultimately a cult. ☯ yYM ☯

It definitely at least used to be. all his points: back like (at least before) the Middle Ages people couldn’t leave the Christian church and people who didn’t believe were burned at the stakes. So immediately also no communication with people from an other believe. And nowadays some people that stop believing are still shunned. Monks live(d) in a monastery with each other, and sometimes alone and isolated. The pope has a lot of power and has some more knowledge. Back in the day people with (for example) the believes from what is now the Protestant church were also executed. And now are still judged for believing something a bit different. Also the church sold items that you needed to remove your sins called indulgences. And if you didn’t you would go to hell. So everything he says definitely applies/applied to Christianity.

It's difficult because it's *definitely a cult* , but its denominations spread so widely and it changed over time to where it almost "diluted" as most denominations abandoned the less fashionable beliefs like that and became more moderate. Just another example of ala carte" christianity. Anyone who actually followed 100% of the bible's tenants would be in prison within a day.

Most of the issues and causes for atheist is the clueless following of tradition by parents. Growing up your parents tell you to believe in this thing because they want the best for you. But even they might not know a lot about that thing. Therefore kids grow up as clueless as the parents. Question everything, question all of your traditions , cultures, beliefes, morals, because it’s all taught. Try to figure out who you are on your own. This universe is too complex for it to work off of its own. I believe in an architect, an engineer, a creator. But not because someone told me to.

I disagree with this. The word cult is useful to describe a certain type of enclosed religious group, with certain associated behaviors or tropes. However to distinguish between a religion and a cult implies mutual exclusivity, which means that religions can be excused from practices which they do engage in, and cults are not given the 'validation' of being a 'proper religion', as if that's any kind of high standard. We have to recognize that all cults with a mystical bent are religions, and many religions are cults. It's sort of like saying "what's the difference between Christian and a vegetarian, it's not a great question to begin with.

I was approached and invited by a cult for the first time a few months ago almost immediately after a death in my family, and it's easy to see how some vulnerable people can be sucked in by how friendly and idealistic cult recruiters can be. It's scary how easily cults seem to be able to gather information and money. I'm grateful for you sharing your thoughts and wish there was more education out there warning people about these parasitic organizations.

The difference is how much an ideology/set of beliefs is reigned in by secular humanism. Invariably, when someone asks about the set of beliefs a group holds, they're contrasting it with the values of secular humanism. A cult is an insular set of beliefs of a group least compatible with secular humanism. A religion has at least made some strides to be compatible with secular humanism, and continually strives to do moreso. Its why we see the Catholic Church consistently tout how they address atheism and homosexuality in their ideology, but secular humanism never touts how it tries to align with church doctrine.

A cult is a faith that is exclusivist, secretive, brainwashing, and authoritarian. What is meant by exclusivism is that they may say “We’re the only the ones who have the truth. Everyone else is wrong. If you leave, your salvation is in jeopardy.”
@ritarita9750

Do you have the strong conviction you have the truth, if not why worship at all. Do you understand what I said. Would you say I am worshipping in the lie? No you wouldn't. Jesus and his chosen disciples were worshipping in spirit and truth. Followers of Christ too are worshipping in spirit and truth. You would expect the oneness in true worship. Keep in mind everyone that God chooses are given to Jesus and will be worshipping in spirit and truth for God is looking for such like ones. If you do not believe you will not remain. The problem is not about one faith, truth......the problem is marjority do not believe there is truth anywhere.

I don't want to be an atheist though. I know now why. When I just say pls don't say that word. It's a word against God. Mostly of them will say "SHUT THE " " Up" and some will say "sorry. I didn't knew you we're that religious like God was never...". This mostly happens to me. One time one person said Christians are worst. I was offended. When I just tell them one word about God. They will say "dum dum", "liar", "st*pid" and the most bad words you'll ever imagine. I don't believe in God once I was little so I was a bit out of mind and words. I just knew him as the good guy but I realized how I am today than before. I'm mostly hurt of what atheist say to me. It never gives me depression and for some reason after I cry, it made me happy and proud of myself that I didn't go and cry. I once debated to a person here in this channel. He called me all the bad words. He recently use the word "liar" and "st*pid". I'm so hurt of other things that have been said to me. I am still proud that God is with me and I will never stop sharing for the Holy Spirit lives within me and for the miracles I have witnessed with my OWN Eyes and for his son Jesus Christ. God bless you all!

Jesus addressed this issue and we have free will to take it or leave. Luke 13:1-5 English Standard Version (ESV) Repent or Perish 13 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” In commenting on the fall of the tower of Siloam, Jesus negates four assumptions that people often make: 1) Suffering is proportional to sinfulness. 2) Tragedy is a sure sign of God’s judgment. 3) Bad things happen only to bad people. 4) We have the right to make such judgments. To each of these assumptions, Jesus says, no. When we read of a tragedy in the headlines, we should resist the temptation to assign guilt to the victims, as if they had received God’s judgment. Rather, Jesus bids us look to the sin within us and take the headline as a warning to repent. The sudden death of someone should not be an occasion for blame but for self-examination.

Recently I had a debate with a couple of Christian ladies about whether or not Christianity is a religion or not. Their take on it is that it is not a religion, but a relationship etc.,. Apparently alot of Christians/churches are taking the stance of it not being a religion.. so what I'm thinking is, that if they are so adamant on the fact that they "are not a religion", than why should their organization be able to be exempt from paying taxes? The only reason why they are exempt is because they are federally recognized as a religion, but now they are claiming that they are not.. I thought maybe you could make a video on it and help spread the word on weither or not they should be taxed..

But aren't all these differences just because of size of cults and their acceptance in society? Because they are small, one leader is able to manage all members and tell them directly what do. Because they are small, even one member leaving is a big blow to the cult, so cults have harsh rules about interacting with outside world. Etc. As more members get into cult, it becomes a moderating influence their believes would change to accommodate more people with more diverse worldview. So they become religions.

Here's how I tell. I spot them very easily. No matter what environment whether social, college, work or even if you bump into them at the market. I tell all my own people in my vids that it is very clear whether someone is a fundamentalist--they just can't leave you alone. Really, how many Episcopalians want to redirect you in your beliefs? I've never had one. But the fundamentalist will flat out tell you it is their duty to harass you "for your own good." That sort of thinking led to the Spanish Inquisition. All the fundamentalists can't even accept each other. I have heard an Evangelical say the Jehovah Witness was a cult member. As if the Evangelical isn't. It all comes down to high control religion and suppression of thought--the heartbeat of the fundamentalist. Cheers, DCF

Actually a more or less reasonable argument, I agree what would be considered a cult in the modern definition would be a closed group, inability to question or at least a philosophy that cancels any argument to 'doesnt agree with cannon equals wrong', inability to access doctrine etc. I can think of a few modern non religious movements that also fit his description. As a Scientologist I don't feel the label applies, you can access the materials in just about any library or order them, you can leave any time you want, yeah they'll certainly contact you to find out whats up but you actually just have to write a letter and ask, they want to talk with you before you go as upsets can usually be handled. The majority of my friends are not scientologists and thats normal. There is an emphasis on clearly understanding whats written but its stated in quite a few places that if its not true for you, its not true, theres no use to anybody believing in something that can't be demonstrated, shown and inspected. As far as money since people often ask, I believe most religions ask for 10% of some ones income, there is no such requirement in scientology, some donate more, some less, I'm quite happy donating as I know where it goes, it keeps the lights on, pays the rather modest staff pay, covers travel and expenses for the various human rights, literacy and disaster response initiatives. Since 9/11 there have been volunteer ministers at nearly every major world disaster.
