Thanks Andy, great explanation on tax differences between ETF’s and Mutual Funds. I was aware ETF’s were more tax efficient, when held in a normal brokerage account, but did not fully understand why ....... now I do. 😉

Thanks Bud! It's important to know that ETFs are not completely void of passed through capital gains during the year. It's just that those passed through gains are significantly limited compared to mutual funds.

Are mutual fund capital gains distributions taxed differently based on whether the company held the capital asset for more than one year or less than one year? In other words, if a mutual fund sold a stock for a gain which it held in its portfolio for less than one year, would the distribution be taxed as a short-term capital gain at the investor's ordinary income tax rate? And conversely, if the mutual fund sold a stock for a gain which it held in its portfolio for more than one year, would the distribution be taxed as a long-term capital gain at the investor's capital gains rate?

That's why I don't understand why people still buy mutual funds. I know it was a hot think 20+ years ago.
