I'm 51 female, just got my first tattoo last week. It's a small piece on my inner forearm (3" x 2"). I got it thinking it would be my only tat, but I already feel like it looks "lonely" so I want more. Plus I actually enjoyed the experience getting it, as well as the finished result, so I'm seriously considering a half sleeve from my wrist to my elbow from the same artist. Up until a few months ago I was a "I'll never get a tattoo" person. But I started noticing the overall look of them on people, and the endless variety, and myriad forms of creativity, and now I'm totally captivated. Even though the dress code in my career doesn't allow tattoos to be visible while working, I'm retiring in about a year and it won't be a big deal for me to keep them covered in the meantime.

Working on a traditional Japanese hikae full sleeve. Just one thing, the harsh lines you mentioned on Japanese sleeves are meant to be able to be added onto! Typically, the Japanese would start at a location and expand after so long. By having that line, you’re able to create a definitive stopping point or expand on it. Think of a skull, if you add a skull to the sleeve you could have the top of the head start at the bottom of the wind/water bar and then continue to other water/wind bars down to meet up with the skull easily and keep the flow. Also, I agree NO SLEEVE if you aren’t wrapped around! That one makes me mad and I don’t even have a completed sleeve! Lol

I personally think it depends on the person for if they look good with sleeves or not but for being fully tatted out, I wouldn't let anyone sway you on choosing if you want your tattoo or not, who cares what the society thinks and if someone doesn't hire you for tattoos, then they didn't deserve you nor did you need to be there anyway. I work at walmart and I get tattoos all the time, goal is to be covered and so is my wife... and at walmart they accept everyone and however they look, thats how the world should be, its your body, your decision

My favorite style is black and gray. I started off my sleeve with strategic placement on my pieces with the intentions on finishing the sleeve as soon as possible. My final appointment is going to be this coming Friday. I guess some people would say it looked a little patchy until we started filling in all the negative space with background and shadowing. I think half sleeves are more popular. But people that have half sleeves eventually make them a full sleeves I find. Just my personal opinion :)

Hi again..my full sleeves were done by the same tattoo artist..he was of an old school sort...many years of experience and very talented..I gave him my thoughts..old school biker theme with original art..he was not interested in copying artist..he would add his own style and would look original in style..looking back giving him the opportunity to run with it..I would come in with idea's but he had the final word. He would listen and explain and kinda give the reasoning behind his goal..I would then really respect his decisions. Because now looking at my sleeves and the endless comments I get from everyone..its "wow great tattoos. It's amazing how it all comes together.."to be honest I never really realized that until a a year or so later..how much important impact this had giving the tattoo artist control..and how his true talent was given to me...I still am really realizing this fact everyday lately..watching your blog..I unwittingly did a huge thing..talented people can do alot when given the opportunity..granted I had the funds for this...every Wednesday 3.5 hours upto 5..depending on my body able to endure each week...I think I went for at least four months..each Wednesday..I know I repeated this but I think it's very important that the artist is given the opportunity to show his talent..and if going full sleeves don't rush it..I think if you can set aside 325...to 475 each week and pick a day....and once a week for I think a minimum of 8 weeks you will have a decent sleeve..I invested I think 15 or 18 Wednesday's..average 4.5 hours a week .but if you're designing something different could be less time..

On the half sleeve rule, I don't necessarily believe you HAVE to have the the inner and outter done, it just depends on how much it does wrap around. If you have 3/4 wrap around, that's enough for me to call a sleeve but I do feel sorta the same way as you on that. I've just seen some sleeves that don't fully wrap around but it works
@MizzouRah78 Жыл бұрын
I know this is old, but... I was just wondering if anyone would say something like this, so I had to comment lol. Think about WHY it's called a sleeve. Just like a shirt, jacket, or coat, it wraps all the way around. To me, this is simple and straightforward. There's no need for semantics. If it doesn't wrap around like an actual sleeve, then you don't get to call it a sleeve. Period.

So my tattoos are much more patchwork. I have always gotten more excited about tattoos that feel like they stand on their own. For me, getting tattoos is how I connect to my parents. They are the only ones on both sides of my family with full sleeves, full back, chest, belly, ect. I started on my chest and the worked my way down my arms. I have pieces all up my arms but I also have a lot of negative space (non tattooed skin). I really like it this way. I'm definitely not done getting my arms tattooed but I personally don't like sleeves that cover every inch of skin. A lot of the times when I see someone with a full sleeve, the images eventually blend together and become muddled. This may just be the way my brain works but I love curating the space in between my tattoos.

Would you not consinder a bunch of small single tattos all over the arm a sleeve? Thats what i like the most even tho it looks like a beat up school table

I would as long it has a background like clouds, waves, stars, dots, etc. Where it fills any big gaps

In cali I see a ton of people with half sleeves on the wrist and forearm. It’s a quick and easy way to have a lot of work done in a highly visible part of your body.

I got my full tribal sleeve (filipino tribal) because I am from Pillippines, and right now Im working on my japanese realism sleeve, because I lived in Tokyo for a few years and I absolutely love their culture, then I plan on an anime leg sleeve tattoo in the future with a few of my favorite animes that I grew up with and I currently watch.

I’ll tell you this Justin. I want my arms covered. My left arm that will be filled with tattoos of my creative ideas. What mean by that, is tattoos that represent me and my life. My right arm will be dedicated to my family. I am a family man. Now I got 2 tattoos on my left arm. Upper between the shoulder to bicep. Unfortunately I don’t think my left arm be considered a sleeve given the placement and design that I have on it . But my right arm when I start my family sleeve would be more coherent.

That’s crazy cause I have the exact same concept for my arms.

I LOVE a full sleeve. I’m working on getting one now. I have a nautical half sleeve (a giant pirate ship, compass, lighthouse and a globe aesthetic as the background) and for the lower part I’m thinking of getting Poseidon kind of like your Zeus one and maybe some kind of topography for the back of my forearm. That last part is still up in the air. If anyone has any ideas let me know!!

I am about to finish my first sleeve with gap tatts and then fillers to complete it. Then while having a break think about a full chest piece. :D Will also get hand tattoos one day.

I love full sleeves. My husband has both arms done and I’m working on my left arm right now. I have a bottom half sleeve on my left arm. It’s floral/black and white. My right arm I plan making it a full sleeve for my kids once we are done having kids.

My plan is the left side of my body is for the random tattoos (getting my 2nd tattoo on the 11th on my calf) I want to get, the right side I actually would like to do a full sleeve but I am still figuring out exactly what theme I would like to go for.

This is what I’m going for too but reversed;) I have a few kind of random ones on my right arm and a full sleeve scheduled for my left arm because I didn’t want to look like a walking sticker anymore😂 I wonder if I’ll ever go for my legs

So im from Romania, I was born there, got adopted into Duin Ireland so grew up here but still am from Romania. I been working on getting a half sleeve. A friend of mine have designed the first part of the half sleeve from the back of the forearm ( where the vein wrist is) All the characters are Romanian. And then eventually it'll turn into a sleeve

I love the look of both sometimes I wish I'd have done a whole sleeve 1 piece but I prefer the patchwork sleeve for me personally. I love meeting old school dudes with patchwork sleeves and torsos how they can tell a story and look to a specific area on their skin it just brings the stories to life. Plus when you go to bring it all together with filler I think a lot of artists thrive on that creative drive a request like that brings. Looking at your pieces definitely makes me wish I went the other way sometimes but I'm happy with the story my work tells right now. Do I hear a Canadian accent? Or is that just really north US?

I want 2 full patchwork sleeves (still debating if I want the hand too or not lol) My left arm is gonna be imagery from where I’m from and childhood memories, and my right arm is gonna be memories from different places I’ve travelled to.

I have a sleeve where I originally had a couple words on my forearm, then I built clouds around them with a gates of heaven to make it into a forearm half sleeve, which I then built into a full sleeve on my upper arm with a clock and roses

I am working on a full full sleeve. Right now I have a thick forearm band with Indigenous designs (similar to the tribal example shown) but with my peoples designs that tell a story. Luckily my workplace acknowledges that it is a legit cultural thing.
