Wow this is really good. Always wondered why some do their stuff in 3d then take it into photoshop for further tweaking. Very insightful.

Any tips for organizing digital assets so it's easy to find 3d models or a photo of a perfect sky that you took? I'm on the lookout for a good DAM or even just a thoughtful workflow to search and sort different media types.

So for 3d I actually wrote my own called SAL, it's part of the soulburnscripts package. www.neilblevins.com/art_assets/scripts/soulburnscripts_for_3dsmax.htm Although I stopped updating it when max went rental only. But I still use it fr all my current stuff. For images, I still just use ACDsee and a really well organized directory structure. I have librarian tendencies :)

Yes, a very handy, fast and satisfying technique. Unless the client says: "Can you change the angle of the shot." But I guess in that's not an issue in concept art so much.

Ya, that’s more for final shots. Although if it’s likely you’ll need multiple angles, even in concept, you can always use mostly 3D with just minimal photo plus hand paint so it’s fast to do the multiple versions.
