Its a start, but we're not getting there yet since most of these games are getting incredibly low budget, cuz square still wanna play safe. Diofield is unfinished product, valkyrie has nothing to offer except linear combat, star ocean looks pretty ambitious but graphics quality cant take it there

except the issue with square is they forgot they are famous for final fantasy. projects like avengers and forspoken almost killed the studio, not final fantasy tard.

Im loving these "smaller" Square titles more and more. They feel like the golden age of Square; lots of ideas, new gameplay from traditional genres and not huge 100+ hour titles. Hoping to pick this one up when it releases.

Also not spending the majority of their resources on graphical fidelity and aspects of the game that don't actually affect the gameplay itself. Who cares if a game looks cutting-edge-amazing if its gameplay is mediocre? Cut the fat, take risks, be creative. Small games can still be very successful, relative to their budget.

Thanks. I appreciate your reviews. This looks like a decent game. The opening cinematics didnt look too bad to me. But Id rather titles not go over the top with cinematics and deliver more on gameplay, anyway. As interesting as this looks, there are a bunch of titles coming up that I am excited for, so I dont know when I'll get to this. I will keep an eye on it though.

Combat feels very similar to Destruction mode in 13 Sentinels but in a fantasy setting and not defending your base. Looking forward to this.

Look at Dungeon Seige battle. It's back to the 2000 era. The only difference is the summon part and Dungeon Seige is darker theme.

I've played some games in the past with what some would consider sub par graphics/visuals, and they've been awesome games gameplay/story, music wise. And I've also played "AAA" titles that were totally lacking in any of that stuff. Graphics don't make a good game. They help somewhat, but there's way more to it than that.

It's why I put 100s of hours into Fallout 3/NV; those games don't exactly look nice but the gameplay and characters/stories etc is what kept me coming back. Way too much emphasis is put on graphics and it causes a lot of great games to be overlooked, which is a shame.

I agree but good graphics sure do help. But they don't make a good game. I have played smaller titles and AAA games and it is hit and miss. Some are great and some eh. But the AAA titles hurt more because they usually cost the full price.

Just played the demo when it came out, at first I agree that it’s a modern take of what a ff tactics would be like. The summons nailed it. Then I remember a series that popped up into my head, Growlanser. Diofields gameplay like a much more faster paced less and smoother version of the Growlanser series, super hard games with 5 being the easiest.

Had a similar concern when starting it (PC the resolution settings don't seem to work) but swapped over on my Switch to play it and was enjoying it more than I expected. Will keep an eye on this one for sure.

You didnt mention positioning is really important, too. You make bonus damage from behind etc. So maybe grab the attention of the enemy with a shield tank and attack with dps classes from behind.

Is the game actually an RTS, because in the footage it looks like you can pause and make decisions. So it's more real time with pause, like classic crpgs? Also, how is the writing and story? Those are the biggest reasons for me to play a game like this and I hope that the game is well written with a good story.

it's not an RTS, the game actually stops every time you are pressing a button to do something (even just give directions). so, if you are in the right position and have enough points you can activate different units special skills back to back

Square-Enix are finally back to their former selves, it would seem. So much great stuff from them lately. I grew up with SRPGs (Shining Force, FFT, Jeanne D'Arc) and RTS (Warcraft, Dawn of War) so this is right up my alley. Between this, Triangle Strategy and later this year Tactics Ogre Reborn (March of the Black Queen is complete utter nostalgia for me), I'm a very happy camper!

I’m glad you did a first impressions video on this game. This was something that was shown off a while back and really interested me. As a matter fact I have a pre-ordered right now at Amazon. I was really interested in this because fire emblem three houses really turned me onto strategy RPG games and I love Final Fantasy so I figured it would be a great mixture of the two. I’m not super into the HD 2-D art style so I thought this would be perfect for me. But I haven’t seen anybody else talking about it. Either way love the video hope I enjoy the game.

What I played I liked, almost every aspect is great but I'm on the fence about the strategy/combat. It felt like all I was doing was moving characters in to position to attack, using all of the specials up, and then waiting for cool down, use summons then it's just wash, rinse and repeat. I'm really not sure this will keep my interest over an entire game. I do love the darker adult tone of this game though-
