it helps when you write something that is close to reality, most shows are just unrealistic, ie slowhorses, the show is good but you know it just way too unrealistic

Not really that clever. More cliche. They overdid it with the angry tough woman who the men need more than she needs them. I keep watching hoping it gets better but they keep hammering on the same schtick. Pretty predictable dialogue, especially when people keep saying the same kind of thing over and over.

This show is not just the best, smartest show I’ve ever seen on Netflix, it’s the best, smartest show I’ve ever seen on any platform. Superb writing, stellar acting (there’s not a single character that’s not believable), a perfect musical score for the show, a thoughtful variety of camera work to tell the story, credible lighting for every set, and every other fine detail come together to make an expertly directed series. The dialogue is unforced but still sophisticated. The pacing feels normal but still exciting. The contrast among characters makes each one jump off the screen-even the minor characters. This show is itching for more awards than the industry currently offers. They might need to make a new one: “And the winner of Gestalt Perfection goes to . . .”

I think Women between 20 and 30 who majored in political science might love it but not realize that this show isn’t really original and it isn’t clever. It’s just a way for women to relish the idea of a female political action hero who is smarter than all the men

@@DOW9925 I guess if I watched just the first little bit, I might come away with the same idea. But for me, by the middle of the first season, I realized that there is some built-in ambiguity to the title of the series itself: is "The Diplomat" Kate Wyler or Hal Wyler? I say this because it is Hal, not Kate, who is pulling all the strings. We also see Hal being the storyteller, the schmoozer, the politician. If he were writing a story about what happened, it would look like this series. Kate, meanwhile, has no interest in telling this story. She wants to get through this chapter of her life and on to something that feels more meaningful to her. The ambiguity of the title is a large part of what makes the series so interesting. Viewers spend time trying to figure out just exactly who the title character is. All that is to say, I didn't get the feeling the series was pushing a hardcore feminist agenda. It shows Kate fumbling and muddling through a lot-to the point of angering even her allies-especially in the second season. Like you, my wife does not care for the series, but her reasoning is different: she thinks it's too complicated! She's a thermal power engineer, but politics has never been her thing. I'm a math guy, so I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to it. Maybe if I'd majored in poli-sci, I might be bored, as you suggest.

I don’t see Hal as pulling all the strings but he seems to be someone who could be a valuable asset but she’s a bit neurotic control freak with a rage problem who goes from being somewhat interesting to very unlikable every 2nd or 3rd episode. Anyway, I’m on season 1 episode 8, still watching…we’ll see.

@@DOW9925 I don't know if this will help or not, but I wasn't completely in love the first time through season 1. I was smitten, for sure-I mean, enough to rewatch all of season 1-but that second time helped me pick up on all the nuances that make the storytelling great. A lot of it is NOT in the dialogue. It's in the looks, subtle movements, background. I don't think I've ever missed so much in a first watch. Well, maybe it's just my senses dulling. Oh, and yes, Hal is a control freak with a rage problem. But he hides it from the public well. He's a charming snake. I love the way his character is written. I'll put it this way: without Hal, no significant part of the story arc actually happens, other than the initial bombing. He's the key to the whole plot.

I realize it would have been impossible to cut a trailer that teases the entire second season without outright letting the audience know that both Hal and Stuart survived the explosion in the season 1 finale (RIP Ronnie), but it would have been nice to have been in a dark just a little. This is a minor complaint. The Diplomat is the best series I've seen in years and I can't wait for more!

Apparently because Debora Cahn was worried she wouldn't have time for more than 6 episodes... But it turned out she had a lot more time than originally feared. Even 8 episodes per season for this is not nearly enough I think; should be 12+. The West Wing was 20+ episodes per season...
