The direct route through Flores, Indonesia: RTW Ep19 🇮🇩

The DR650s made it through the ferry crossing without falling over, and we're now onto our next Indonesia Island - beautiful Flores.
We know the ferry schedule ahead gets a bit sparse and we now need to make the Labuan Bajo - Bira connection, so we head straight West; but the most direct route isn't usually the fastest when it comes to Indonesia.
We are also celebrating Liss's birthday, so we have a couple of days in Labuan Bajo to enjoy ourselves before we have to psyche ourselves up for a gruelling 24-hour ferry ride.

I don’t envy your ferry experiences at the moment. Can’t imagine their version of Carnival Cruising themes maybe on the lines of : Indonesian Tribulation Experience. If you have tried the best we suggest you come along on an adventure that promises to be unorganised and chaotic with no creature comforts shared intimately with strangers and the odd farm animal. Liss: That mantra was at the end of a pretty strong drift dive. It's so funny while you are kicking hard to stay in one spot, or clinging onto bottom hooks, the mantra is just gracefully heading into the drift.

I have travelled many times in Indonesia when taking transport you should always ask if they are on keret jam which means rubber your they never keep schedule they leave when the boats full or the captain has finished his lunch always the way

Liss: Our current say nav is so good for us. Unlike Google, which will take you the quickest route, this seems to have no idea how long a row will take, so it just seems you on the most direct road no matter how difficult 😅. It's led to some interesting pathways

What an ordeal, nicely summed up by Harry and probably exactly how I would have felt. While Harry was contemplating his life choices, and perhaps whether or not to jump ship and fly home, you seemed to be enjoying yourself! Out of curiosity, how would you describe the condition of the sanitary facilities on board said ferry?

Liss: There were 4 bathrooms on the ferry. Each of them were squat toilets with mandi bucket for washing/flushing. So pretty basic, but there was always water in the Mandi, an open porthole and everyone washes the floors and loo so it stays clean enough. One of the bathrooms had soap and I have alcohol gel. That ferry was pretty grim, especially compared to the last one. The bed area was super hot and everyone was constantly smoking around you whereas there had been no smoking in the sleeping room on the previous ferry. Plus, an extra 8 hours compared with the last one, so it felt like forever. But the people were friendly, and we were lucky to be allowed to sit in the captain's area for a few hours through the day as the sun made it impossible to sit elsewhere on deck. Our friend ended up sleeping on that deck for the whole trip as he struggled with the beds.

The ferry is not my cup of tea, but I have always been a creature of comfort I suppose! I do admire your gung-ho spirit and just embarking on such a long journey is a testament to your bravery if you ask me! Excellent video! Just my 2 cents' worth: if finances and schedules allow it, I would not try and keep to any timeline, because delays and breakdowns mean you miss out on seeing many attractions!

Liss: it is subsidised. They just raised the prices and there have been protests about it. Standard fuel is now 10000IDR and premium is 15000IDR per litre. That's about 1USD
