Riding On Eggshells

Жыл бұрын

The second of episodes from my solo trip around northern Thailand. In this episode I spend time in a beautiful tea village called Ban Rak Thai, and check out a mud spa before heading out on Tatanka the DR650 to ride some of the beautiful mountain roads of northern Thailand. From Pai to Fang, Google maps gives me a bit of bad advice on which country is which, but otherwise I enjoy the cool climate and the quiet roads.
Hope you enjoy this episode, which is again a bit different to our usual. Last week I had such a good response to the first of this series, so thank you for your comments on that video, they are now in the front of my mind for all filming in the future. Once we complete the Thailand series, I hope to produce a similar style for the ongoing trip on the Indian Subcontinent.
Thank you to our patrons who support us and follow along with where we are currently on Patreon. Please check out www.patreon.com/ridingoneggshells if you would like extra content, live updates and early access to our videos, along with joining the conversation on how we can make our episodes in the future.

I watch with my partner and we're both enjoying your contributions to the channel more than the chaotic almost 'forced' conflict & drama. We appreciate that it's a challenge to ride from Australia to England, but it doesn't need to be an unpleasant journey and we'd actually stopped watching the uploads as we don't find it enjoyable to watch someone struggle and fall down, particularly when it was due to an unnecessary diversion or situation. Looking forward to you meeting back up with Harry to continue your main journey, but I hope he watches your content and reads the comments to see how to make the journey enjoyable for you both. Good luck!

I’ve been following you guys for a few years now and even though the chaos is charming (most of the times), I find this way of “presenting” the journey soo much more enjoyable. I’m not saying you can’t travel and create videos like this one as a couple, but seeing you make your own decisions and follow your own path is really nice. The focus seems to be less on the ride and the hassle of things breaking, you or Harry falling, or the banter and/or bickering. Sometimes you have to make a change to see what works better, and I think this definitely does. Travel on!

Liss. Your solo riding is much better as you're enjoying it. Nobody should be pressured into doing things they don't enjoy. The videos are much more calmer with no drama. When you lost a couple of things you just dealt with it in a calm easy manner. Keep it up you're doing great 👌

You have found your groove; riding solo is much more relaxing than trying to keep up with the chaos Harry generates. I have never understood why Harry feels the need to force situations in order to create drama. It is completely unnecessary; let the journey and the story unfold naturally. The best riding of the day is early in the morning just after first light. M preferred routine is to get up about a half hour before sunrise, pack up, have a coffee and start the day's ride around sunrise. The streets and roads are typically quieter, this part of the day is the calmest. I will stop for breakfast after I have ridden for one to two hours. I like to make my day's destination by three or four in the afternoon to give myself a little time to explore on foot before the day comes to an end. Liss, your last two videos are amazing.

I have enjoyed both of your solo uploads Liss and prefer your new style, making progress whilst giving us a feel for the places you visit. You are fortunate that you know the country well and I hope you are able to continue like this when you move on. Having watched you both from the beginning I much prefer this style rather than seeing you fall off a heavily loaded bike whilst tackling some often unnecessary and virtually impossible off road track, or getting into great detail about local political and religious issues. I am sure you are focussed on the goal, which is to travel from Australia to the UK in a reasonable time frame/budget whilst enjoying the countries you pass through. I wish you well as Christmas and Happy New Year. Paul in UK

Well, i don't like to see you fall off. OK, sometimes it's funny, but I'm always rooting for you to make that difficult, slippery track. You're a much better rider that you think you are - and you've come a long way from those early days on the Himalayan ( far better than me ) Really enjoying these gentle style videos but, also, hope everything works out with Harry.

We don't love watching you fall, we are inspired by the fact you get back up and keep going. The solo content is like watching an episode of Getaway (travel show in Aus) very.... Zzzzzz. My missus and I both are adventure riders and your couples chaos reflects our own. We would rather compromise on what we do rather then go our own way. Hope you guys find a way to continue where you both are happy with each other and see the world through each other's eyes.

Hello Harry here sorry to butt in on Liss' episode, but I think this is such an important point. I too don't like seeing her fall, what I love is watching her get better. If you watch from the beginning (as I think you have Steph!) Liss goes from falling over on totally flat ground, to falling over on very steep ground. She rides so incredibly well now. Confident, capable, and still careful. I remember getting misty-eyed when I heard @nerb1 saying he was impressed that we/she could ride in the Victorian High Country. I think people get the mistaken impression I drag Liss places she doesn't want to be and she regrets it and hates me. I may influence her, but that's only because we've talked about it so much and we often agree that the tough bits are the bits we cherish the most and get the most from. For some people, that may, understandably, seem oppressive or bother them for whatever reason. For us it's just a balance we find and enjoy. I really appreciate your comment and think it's a valuable insight that my battered ego is latching onto. Thank you! -H

Oh my this route from Pai to Wiang Heang brings back some memories. A friend and I cycled, yes on mountain bikes, from WH to Pai in 2004. I'm recalling the junction with an army post, and Pai signboard, the wooden bridge outside Muang Noi etc. in yr video. We stayed at another border patrol post here as it was getting dark at 6.00pm. They took pity on us, fed us dinner and breakfast. Back then most of the route was barely a meter or 2 wide. Definitely just a red earth foot path. No concrete roads whatsoever. The next day Pai seemed like Las Vegas. I believe the closed road you got to after Doi Ang Kang does lead to Fang city. It skirts very close to a ridge next to a Burnese machine gun post, hence no entry. I know that some mcyclists start from Fang and climb up the opposite direction but it can be washed out. Seen gaping holes in some pics. I too was turned back at that same roadblock I 2017.

So "Liss In Boot's" a subsidiary of Riding On Egg Shells. You have got this Solo gig down!!! I am getting a real Nigella vibe when you are describing things, it's a totally different you. More relaxed & whimsical. Even Mrs Wombat noticed the difference in your demeanour & how much prettier you look by having time to put into yourself. I can see that as men we really want to lead rides and probably expect our ladies to be more like us and enjoy our agenda. I am seeing that this may not be the best thing. I think you & Harry will appreciate each other after this little adventure apart, also you have just niched a new style of Motoblogging as being a couple and 2 solo's on the same journey. No one else has done that, so nice one!! You have created a 1st (as far as I know at least ) and in this blogging world it's hard to come up with something original ;) Stay safe and we're watching, Harry pull your finger out and keep up :P

Great video, Liss. I love taking off early in the morning as well, for reasons you mentioned. Yes, when traveling solo you have to be responsible for everything, but I love travelling solo, so I've gotten use to double checking the room before I leave and making sure bags are secure. BTW, I don't love seeing you fall down, I love seeing you having fun and challenging yourself. I remember the early episodes with the Himalayan and the falls, drops, etc; you've come so far as a rider and are very confident on a larger bike. Can't wait for the next one.

Congratulations on a well put together and enjoyable clip. Quite relaxing and looks like you have settled-in and enjoying your trip too. I guess many of us are wondering what is it really like and this is a window into that world, so thank you. I stumbled across the Riding on Eggshells when you were leaving Sydney and I was instantly attracted to the emphasis on "coffee, roughing-it in motels, and running a bit late”. In the context of “anti-hero” I think of you as Anti-Adventure riders. A superbly wry outlook and the subtle humour you bounce off each other is a delight to watch. Hoping the remainder of the trip is relaxing, enjoyable and rewarding.

This side of you is much easier to watch. I’m sure there will be some problems along the way on a journey like yours it would be unusual if there were not.
