CBC Marketplace went undercover to investigate food safety protocols in some of Canada’s biggest supermarket chains. Based on seven years of inspection records provided by Toronto Public Health, producers took hidden cameras into some Toronto supermarkets with high rates of serious infractions. They spotted flies in the meat department, employees not wearing masks and empty soap dispensers in a public washroom. With the help of a retired health inspector, Marketplace also tested the internal temperature of some foods and found that some pose a high risk of causing food poisoning.

I’m a cashier at grocery store. What people don’t understand is we are doing everything we can to sanitize everything to keep customers safe but it doesn’t help when customers don’t want to sanitize there hands or wear a mask when they come in. It just makes all of our efforts pointless. I’m sorry that the sanitizer drys out your hands or if it smells bad for like 2 seconds or that you don’t like wearing your mask for 10 minutes you come in to pick up groceries. I have to wear my mask for 8 hours, you think I like it? I wear it to keep you safe, and my fellow employees safe and myself safe. It’s the least you can do when I’m putting my own health at risk to help you. Also the pin pads are really difficult to clean. I know my store had to replace like 4 machines because we were cleaning them so much that they got water damaged. It’s just a lot easier if people sanitize when the come in the store and when they leave. It can’t be left all up to the stores, you guys gotta do your part too.

The problem is that so many employees literally half*ss things that even if they have cleaner in their hands at the time, there is no guarantees that (a) they've used it or (b) they've used it properly. I worked in a hospital for years and as you stated about the deli you worked in...when supervisors knew the state was coming to inspect facilities...everyone got overtime because they worked them like dogs...to make management 'look good'. Yes common at McDonalds too, they generally know when the health inspector is coming in and do a top notch job of spiffing the joint up. I suppose though you could look at this from their perspective, the place is at least getting cleaned once in a while because if there were no inspections it would never get cleaned! My wife worked in several McDonald’s for years, if you were sick with anything you were not supposed to work but they would not send anyone home and if they called in sick they were given a hard time about it and then had to face shorter hours in the following weeks as management retaliated. They would have employees working with fevers, the runs, coughing, runny noses, management and owner didn’t care whether it was a health rule or not. I never eat there and rarely eat at any chain fast food joints.

I understand everyone's concern with the sanitizer pump germs but the thing is your hands are dirty, the pump is dirty, you squeeze out disinfectant and rub all areas and then your hands are miraculously cleaned. It doesn't matter if the pump is dirty because as soon as you do a proper disinfection of your hands, the germs go away. People worry about the wrong things and then immediately do piles of careless things right after. I carry my own pocket size disinfection liquid and use a lot just inside the grocery store door and just after leaving shopping (because people need to see a show of people disinfecting). That handles all the germs inside the store (pump, trolleys, baskets, doors, card keypad, counter, products)... JUST DO NOT TOUCH YOUR MASK, FACE, ETC. Do another good hand disinfection after you have gone out the door. The distancing is because most masks do not work well enough. It really is not brain surgery! I worked in the medical field with sterilization and disinfection as part of my job, so often still see people doing silly things thinking they are protecting themselves! By the way... those stores really are not doing much good in disinfecting anything. They are basically just moving the germs round. You need to be responsible for yourself.

They're happy to schedule you to work 11 hours after your previous shift because the Ontario government allows it. Too many sick calls and you get grilled about it despite telling employees to stay home if not feeling well. Actually you'll never be sure since the chain from slaughter to retailer might be too big to track with simple questions and a thermometer. The transportation cars and storage houses must keep the meat cold and never let it warm up. If one of these fails, one might be eating some undesired bacteria in the end. :/ So if you eat meat and fish cook them properly, no rare/medium rare. Treat yourself like a pregnant woman XD

CBC your methodology is FLAWED and your CONCLUSIONS ARE UNFAIR. You can’t take a reading of the food temperature after you’ve taken the food off of a refrigerated shelf and allowed it to sit in direct sunlight and in uncontrolled ambient temperatures(outdoors). Small items with low thermal mass like sushi will quickly acclimate to the new thermal environment. In other words, they will heat up quickly. Anybody who has ever defrosted a food item in their kitchen or a microwave knows that bigger items take longer while smaller items thaw more quickly. This is why the ribs and the chicken were at proper temperature while the sushi was not. Besides the fact that food might be at a higher temp than recommended, it doesn’t matter if it is consumed within a short period of time. Bacteria cultures take time to grow and reach quantities that can make you sick. Warm sushi for 10 minutes sitting on a plate in a warm room is not going to make you sick unless it was already heavily contaminated with a growing culture of bacteria before you received it. This piece is nothing more than a hit job on supermarkets and more COVID-19 scare mongering. I’m very disappointed. The board of directors and/or CEO should be made aware of how you are deceiving your viewers and if they already are aware and it is part of a political agenda, then double shame on you.
@aerofart
@aerofart 3 жыл бұрын
@Tournel Henry it only takes one pinhole to explode a balloon. Besides, if we’re talking about food safety, the only thing that really matters is how much bacteria is on the food when it reaches the hand of the consumer, and they didn’t measure that at all. I’m not even going to get into a debate about COVID-19 because I don’t have forever to argue about that.

We know you can become re-infected with COVID, so why was COVID dude and his wife not masked, especially seeing as she's in an at risk group? What else do you object with? I never asked for clean room level testing, but could they aim for high school grade 9 lab?

@@eginteractive Except people have caught it twice, at least according to reports from several different health agencies, and while that could be wrong it's what been reported. Ignoring that as it doesn't matter to my original post, what part did I get wrong or what part do you disagree with? The testing was sloppy at best, the hygiene / sanitation practices were bad and the overall approach to the content was poor / not thought out.

Here in the U.S., some major retailers and supermarket chains are not allowed to sanitize the pin pad and its screen due to the damage it does to the machines. Some resolved it by placing clear tape over the entire unit; however, its still not 100% safe and clean. If I am to use the pin pad, I use my middle knuckle to enter in the pin. They are a good number of retailers (including Walmart) that still does not allow NFC communications for contactless payment processing.

13:37 getting really desperate to get employees with masks down even when one Is clearly drinking. Yet every shift I've got customers getting close to me to ask me questions and lowering their mask to speak, or always standing just past the barriers and leaning into the till.

Are they employees tho? I don't think so, one is carrying a dollarama bag and a reusable, yet in a grocery store with a ice cap in tow. They clearly don't work there, or if they do they have been off shift for a while or about to start maybe and looking around the store? No offense to you specifically, I rather self checkouts where I live, as I've had nothing but issues dealing with cashiers, they either can't hear me with my mask on or they don't care.

So…2 flies, some terrible thermometer work where they don’t specify how long the food was outside refrigerator, a store ran out of soap and they immediately filled it, guy with phone puts on fresh gloves but they make it seem like he’s wearing old gloves, some masks off when talking( I’ve literally seen this in everywhere, maybe they have exemptions?) and the store had *gasp* bacteria (that stuff that is on everything)on debt machines. Pretty weak sauce. Also the reason we have more and longer lines is because of COVID measures.

@@worldtour4142 you have no clue what your talking about. Vaccines make our immune system stronger. Pesticides have nothing to do with our immune system. The only reason why people get sick more often today than in the past is because the world is far more dense than in the past and international travel is a thing. So your being exposed to far more viruses than ever before in history. It's also worth mentioning that today vs the past most people are not living active, fit lives with a nutrient rich diet which effects your immune system more than anything else.

I worked in a Sobey store for a long time, the only time we got it properly cleaned was when inspectors came by because the majority of the time they want to hire cheap employees who don’t know how to clean (or understand English), bother to enforce social distancing, not enforcing the masks to appeal to customers who don’t want to wear a mask, mice going under pallets in the back room and not even trying to get rid of them and becoming more reliant on self checkout hence why there are barely any tills open.
