Welcome! Anyone else tired of product reformulations? Today we're looking at the real reason behind the recent trend of popular products being reformulated...

*Correction!* The conditioner formulas should say 90% not 80% for Water. Sorry about that guys I should have caught that in the edit - I must be a little rusty 😊
@feli-moore6 ай бұрын
I was actually wondering cos with 80% the batch sum was 90% instead of 100%

Thank you so much for your content. I just started making my own product at home based on some of your videos. Do you take requests for copycat recipes? The company I’ve been buying hair products from has paused production (no time limit 😢) and I wanted to try to make the shampoo, deep conditioner and hair cream at home. I will say the product ingredients are really good and my hair has been very healthy over the past 3 years. If you are open to it let me know and I can share a picture of the product labels with ingredients. Please please say yes 😊

Companies are "reformulating" products because they are cheapening the products to maximize products. Food companies are doing it.

I agree as a cosmetic formulator. This is true. Major brands love to cut costs. I was working with a major brand that stocked my products and they asked me to reformulate it to cut cost but instead, I cut ties with them and decided to stay true to what I found it my brand on.

I knew i wasnt losing my mind! From hair products to lipsticks not staying as long, color adjustment on the shades, maybe even from the ingredients. This makes too much sense

the fact that they don't just launch a new product, label that its be reforumlated or change the label colors/ designs tells me they're hoping we just wont notice and that more often than not, we know its for the worse not the better. its not all things made for all people

I stopped using Shea moisture years ago. Their products were reformulated to cater to "white hair" and it worked like trash in my hair. At the time i was so upset because that brand was so good for our hair. Now there's so many to choose from, as well as the knowledge of how to make my own! Thank God

So glad you are back love your videos, you have really encouraged me to make some of my own products which I now do and I love making and using them ❤ sending love your way ❤ x

Shea Moisture is a brand that went down this route, and there was some customers who were alienated as you say. Rather than extend the brand to incorporate new formulas for the new market segments they wished to attract, they reformulated their existing products instead, which alienated some in their existing customer Base. They did so because of the additional marketing and production costs in creating new targeted products. Brand extension - where new product lines are added to an existing and estalished brand - are inherently more expensive and more risky. From the beginning Shea Moisture, beyond the name, took the approach to make the packaging demographically neutral. Other than being initially launched in outlets used by the Black Community, the packaging and advertising did wear its heart on its sleeve. It would not have looked out of place in a supermarket in a non-ethnic haircare aisle. So perhaps, this was the plan all along. But as the original customer base was one less well catered for in this market, they did not take well to the reformulation. And it's understandable why they were upset, because these customers can't easily substitute a product that no. Longer works as well as it did. This why your work here on YT is a blessing, and any knowledge you can share with us, will help us to better care for our own needs.

Very informative and intelligent video. Hopefully the folks making these "subtle" changes to the products see this. And yes, they do hope we won't notice these changes but that goes to show that they really don't know their product and why it is beloved by its original customers. Also, with them changing a product so late in the game it most likely will not pick up the new customer base they are hoping for since they already know that product didn't originally work for them and wouldn't want to pay that much money to try it again. I definitely will not be buying Shea Moisture Smoothie again because it no longer works for me and was a waste of money sadly. I had been using it for years.
@majestadnegra82476 ай бұрын
I guess they never think their customers who have been there since the beginning wouldn't notice. I respect Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross. She chose to raise her prices $4-5, maybe more, because of the rising costs to make her products. She and her company were very open about the price hike and why. I would much rather pay a few dollars more for a good product rather than buy the watered down version to keep the price stable.

So informative! Thank you for this video!😮😍 Because I always had the feeling some tiny tweaks in product formulations are the ones responsible for why my hair acts the way it acts. Especially finding good conditioners & leave-ins was always a task, because many formulations don’t contain enough ingredients that cling or add grip to my hair. Oftentimes they would just stick on my hair with a white film and won’t add anything to my curl pattern. I’ve been learning so much about formulating my own beauty products at home, and your videos have been helping a lot! I’m glad you’re back!

You are so correct on the disappointment of reformulations. I have thick curly hair and have been constantly disappointed in products I once loved. I always come back to the products you've formulated and tweaked them ever so slightly with an oil, butter, or fragrance. Never touching the bottom line. So happy you're back. You have no idea.

Jergens is a company that reformulates too often. I tend to like their lotions, especially the original scent. They're constantly playing with their offerings, adding and dropping things, which is fine. But they also reformulate their classics every few years, which isn't.

You’re so right we mostly see this in black owned brands who want to appeal to white audiences which is why i’m looking to make my own.
