As far as ballistics go, weight affects the disc as you described. However, the low-density plastic that is used in these discs may also affect the molding a lot. I have seen a lot of 150 class discs that have a very different wing height compared to their max weight counterparts, both much flippier AND much beefier. Sometimes the added exit velocity negates the difference in aerodynamics, sometimes not. Also, sometimes you see microbubble discs where the biggest bubbles are in the rim - this makes the disc even more flexy.

@@IceBergTV we got him to throw lots of super light weight stuff but his go to was the lightest G star mamba we could find. I remember seeing a blue flight team mamba that he used alot.

Those things fly like that because they flip more at the start because they have less rotational inertia and they fade more at the end because they slow down quicker because they have less momentum at a given speed

I Dm'd Innova when Don passed away. Asked them to do a special last run for the Don Shinn Mamba. Guess it never happened . He played at Waller park in Santa Maria California. I have played there twice it's really nice. They have a sign on one of the holes for him. RIP Don. DG legend.

I have a 160g Star Mamba that I throw on a low-ceiling 310' hole. I hyzer-flip it and if I hit the line, it just turns to straight and rides all the way to the basket. One of the most satisfying lines to hit for me. It only takes about 80% power and just stays up under all of the trees.

I have 6-8 Star Mambas ranging from 149 to 175 grams and I find the 158-163 range is the most workable and often the longest in calm air.

One thing that probably seems a little pedantic, but i do actually care about: i dont like describing slow arm speeds as "weak" or any other synonym that has to do with strength because i think it can give some people the wrong idea about the disc golf throw. I for so long tried to just throw harder before i understood it was timing and finesse that make the disc go. Like, i just tried to muscle on discs for years before i actually atarted creating a whip and a real swing. I dont know that it was the language used around throwing that made me think "you gotta throw it harder" but im sure it didnt help. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos. All I throw now are lightweight disc, at 68yo , I don’t like throwing the heavy disc. Some of my favorite disc are dx Innova in the 130-140 gram range. I also have a light opto diamond that I love.

Watched the vid, bought a 138g GStar Mamba, and broke 300’ for the first time. Previous best was 265ish. Thx for this vid!! Oddly, the mamba turned and burned on me until I put what felt like extreme hyzer on it, then it got a decent fight. Must be something off with my form.

I have a couple of "Broken" discs in my collection... One is a Starlite Boss, round the 156g area... Got it from my 'Disc Bank' mate because it floats and I have a lake crossing in an upcoming Tournament (Henly Lake Masterton NZ). Its "Numbers" are 13, 5, -1, 3 but in reality it's like a 5, 8, -4, 1. It puts my Diamond to shame in its turn, It puts my glitch to shame in glide and if you throw it FH overhead verticle... even I can get a 360deg barrel roll out of it. I can back of to 80% and get 300ft out of it... but if I give it the beef (ok I'm only a 330ft max) I can hyzer it OVER 45deg and it still lands 45deg roller. (One of my other broken discs is a 1R RPM Kotare that I can throw 40deg Anhyzer into 50kph headwind.. and it flips flat near immediately and beefs out.)

I am urgently trying to find a 130+ or 140+ one and definitely want to avoid getting one with the children-scaring snake stamp on it (Innova's online store only sells 170+ weights, and no luck yet with the other online shops I have searched).

Heyo, I'm the source of these discs! These two came from the Innova Factory Store, however the stock of all their lightweight Mambas plummeted after this video dropped lol. A few months ago I did find a couple stock stamp GStar Mambas (I think 137g) from Infinite Discs. So they're out there in multiple formats, just come and go kinda quickly now that the word is out how far they go.

I bag three lightweight, Gstar Mambas. If you typically throw around 200-250', the Gstar mamba is a great disc. With the lighter weight, they tend to fly pretty straight and are flexible to flex s-turns as well as hyzer and anhyzer lines. Heavier weights are more stable as is Star plastic. 90% of my drives are using Gstar Mambas. While I mostly throw RHBH, I will often throw a little heavier (155 or 165 gram) forehand. They are great for flip-up forehands though anhyzer tend to flip. I also use them as backhand rollers. Something about the rim depth is super comfortable for my hands. Please stop calling us Old Guys :)

I found a beat to heck super lightweight GStar Mamba (no ink) last month while playing out of town. I was nervous to throw it at first. That disc now has a prominent place in my bag. Flies like a dream!! I didn’t have a good turn over disc. The universe said, hold my Grip Bag, I got something for ya! ❤

140g Innova gstar mystere (super underrated disc in my opinion) will make you heavily debate which one to throw off the tee! The two of them are absolutely phenomenal! But I find myself reaching for the mystere more often. Once again just my preference but you should really, really, give the mystere a few chucks.

Consider trying out the Astronaut from Discmania, was surprised how straight a -4 could be and how much glide it has!!

That's because active line is incredibly inconsistent. The Astronaut can be anything from a stable destroyer to a total roller disc. Also I don't really like any of the active line plastics.

Funny thing about gstar: starts mildly flippy, but doesn’t “beat in” and become more under stable like other premium plastics do. You could easily have a mamba in star or champ that’s far more under stable

@@joeblow2426 gstar pros: best glide, best durability. Cons: worst torque resistance (very hard to forehand with power), worst trajectory control (very hard to throw the low ceiling stingers). Best suited for open air backhanded bombs

The reason they're not as understable as you expect is probably because you're throwing them rather nose up. Notice how much they're rising out of your hand? You're not throwing them as "up" as it appears. They're lifting. Also, notice the excessive lift at the top of the trajectory, and then how it sort of stalls and falls off left rather then penetrating forward? Notice the shot at 2:28 does not exhibit these behaviors. It doesn't rise, it just kicks over and holds anhyzer all the way to the ground. That's because you got the nose (more) down on that one. I'm not trying to give you a hard time or be super-critical, just explaining what I'm seeing.

As the saying goes under stable under rated. Under weight also under rated. Give a L64 opto Diamond a try sometime.The L64 Jade is pretty cool also. I have a dx mamba and sidewinder as well. They are 👍

I have found that the Jade flies great but not that far, its made for S-shapes and a slower speed, but don't really want to fly as nice longer than 270-300'. The Diamond on a hyzerflip line in the correct wind @ 30-40% is really nice.
