I am 61 years old and just started 2 years ago, I found the latitude 64 River + Maul fairway drivers...they have 7 Glide...so you can get an extra 30-50 feet of distance with those bad boys. Get a 150+ gram and then a heavier 175 gram for the windy conditions. Just beware...whatever line you throw them on, it will follow that line. DO NOT be afraid to go play a local tournament...

Finally, a video on disc golf that I can relate to. I don't think younger guys realize that if I could get my body to move the way theirs does to throw the way they do, I would be throwing the same way they do. But I can't. While I enjoy watching those channels, Robbie C's included, they are talking about things I just can't do anymore. Would love to see some instructional videos for people over 65, who throw like old fogies because we are. A lot of good discs for our group have been mentioned and I've tried a lot of them. The Diamond and Jade are two that I like, but the one disc that would absolutely ruin my day if I lost is an Opto Air River. I can throw it just as far as any other disc I own on a straight line. The only problem I have with it is a crosswind and unfortunately, I live in a windy place. So, the disc stays in the bag more than I would prefer. It is also hard to throw on a fore hand for me. Recently obtained a Viking Cosmos in storm plastic, that is almost as good as the River, but does better in the wind.

Thanks so much for your comments. I had an Octo River and I never could get it to "flatten out" when I threw it. I gave it to my friend and his son is really making it fly the way it should. I am just getting back into the sport after several years at a job that kept me away from home a lot. As I was going through my stash of old discs, I came across a Discraft Heat in base plastic. It flies pretty well for my slower arm speed. I liked it so much that I just one in ESP FLX plastic. This one is real nice! You are so right about the different plastics all flying differently. To me, it seems like the more flexible plastics (Innova G-star, Discraft ESP FLX) are a bit less overstable and go farther for slower release speeds. My other favorite disc is the Innova Mamba which I opted for in G-star plastic. Thanks for the video.

Nice to see something for the lower arm speed guys. I just started about 2 weeks ago and found out really quick that I like the medium weight discs for everything but my putters as I like them in the 175 gram weight but most everything else in the mid 160's. I'm 54 and not very flexible so even with correct technique I'm not sure I will ever have fast arm speed so the little lighter weights are nice.

Welcome to disc golf! You'll find what you like. I would suggest trying something under 160 if you can to see how it goes. A Diamond is. great disc, be sure you get it under 160. A Leopard under 160 in DX plastic would also be a really good driver for starting out. I'm a big fan of the Innova starter pack...all of them are light weight and easy to throw.

Nice video. I'm an older player too (61) and I don't have great arm speed. My fav four discs are, the Diamond, Discraft ESP Meteor, Discraft SOL and my putter is the Proxy in the soft neutron plastic. My throws max at about 200-225 feet. Bought my first Innova discs in 1985, thrown Innova ever since. I took an almost 20 year absence from the game when raising a family, work, and extensive travel, then got back into it 5 years ago when I retired. Now at 70 years old I found I had lost arm speed so I concentrated on accuracy, particularly with upshots and putting. My go-to driver is an Innova DX Valkyrie, usually in max weight. I have trouble with premium plastics as they are too over-stable for me. I carry at least 5 Valkyries in varying weights and for the most part I putt with them also. I have found that in the 170+ weight class I have been just as successful with speed 7 and 8 drivers as well and I have found good application with a 142g Star Beast. I play weekly with the local club (SW Florida) and have enjoyed the courses here very much (no more playing in the snow in Boise).

I’m 46, but I’m just starting out and have a bad shoulder, so I have some thoughts on great beginner discs for slower arms. MVP Glitch - this thing is a the closest thing to chucking a frisbee in disc golf. Tons of glide and it is a one speed. It also gives great feedback on release angles. Latitude 64 River - this thing has seven glide on a fairway driver and flies really straight without loads of arm speed. In Opto or Opto Air plastic, it will feel great and is very durable (I prefer Opto).
@NickArnette
@NickArnette 8 ай бұрын
Yes, I love the Glitch for exactly that reason, it flies like a Frisbee. If you're throwing the River well, your arm speed and form is probably pretty good. I have an Opto River. I reviewed it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goWZqGqaiZyqosUsi=eD9cduckGoOSI0YA. If you like the River. Try a Lat 64 Opto Maul (super hard to find). It's similar to the River but easier to throw. Hi, I just wanted to add a note on the blizzard plastic. It is possible to get it in weights so light, that they do actually fly easy like some of the lighter or more understable/flippy/easy turning DX plastic. In particular, I recently found in a used bin for $5 a blizzard champion Destroyer at a mere 131 grams of weight. That’s so light that it actually floats very well in water, even when fully submerged by hand. It takes almost zero effort to throw, but goes as far for me as much heavier discs which require more effort. The trade-off is that it’s more susceptible to the influence of the wind, be it positive or negative. The advantage over baseline/DX plastic is that it’s more sturdy, and so will not get chewed up on the edges so quickly and so badly, and therefore it will retain consistent flight characteristics for longer. It also floats, as mentioned. Finally, in my experience, having such a high speed and ordinarily over-stable (hard fade) disc in such a light weight seems to provide a really nice and straight flight over a surpassingly long distance, whereas my beloved mambas have a far more curvy path to get there. Now, your mileage may vary, and innova is known for having a lot of variance in their runs of the same disc products. However, if you can find a destroyer that weighs less than 140g, maybe consider giving it a shot, especially the closer you get to 130g. It really does feel like a bit of magic throwing it, like throwing a hard puff of air, and watching it soar. I parked and birdied a 340ft par 3 hole today with it that I’ve never birdied before in the 14 months I’ve been playing, having played this course many dozens of times.
@NickArnette
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
Wow, didn't know they made Destroyers so light. That's awesome. A friend of mine throws Mambas in the 130s and gets a lot of distance out of them. I might try flicking my Blizzard Beast and see if I can get a good flight out it...especially if it might float!! I've been working on my forehand. It seems to be making up for my low arm speed. At this point, I'm getting about the same distance with my forehand and backhand. Nice chatting!! Appreciate your comments!

Im very new too, Im 62. For a while I was buying the premium plastic discs the pros are using and getting along... But then I tried some other discs in lighter weight and now Im making better progress. Discs like the FD, the Wraith, and the Stag and Bear. As far as the short game stuff everyone is using like the Buzz, Zone, ect you need power to get them to go 200', so I tried a Fuse and its a great short game disc for me even as a 6 speed. If I had to pick 3 discs, Fuse, FD and Wraith ( and a putter ) If I had to play a round with just 1 disc its the Fuse

Couple tips: - Always warm up and stretch for 5 min! 5-10 gentle bends for the hips and legs, then 5-10 easy twists at the hip, easy rotate your arms, and your neck during stretches. Good for any age but at 58 I need to stretch before anything. - Always get bright color discs. It will save you so much time and headaches finding them in the trees or grass. Most of my discs are white or pink. - Work on throwing flat releases from a deep reach back then pulling across the chest, with out turning your wrist or moving your arm up or down at the release. Don’t try to stop your arm when you release. Let it follow through and across, this will help you not hurt yourself and make your disc go farther. These will really help you get consistent flat controlled throws. Great channel I look forward to your other videos!

THANK YOU, NICK! Different bodies need different discs. People who can rapidly coil and uncoil their torso to throw with more speed often don't understand that older players, (as well as anyone not able to throw fast for a number of different reasons) need different discs and different advice to throw them well. I am 77, and the only joint I have without arthritis is my artificial hip. Westside underworld seems to be a great beginner driver for my newbie friends. I think a lightweight Crave could be a good first step into fairways too, as its in between a traditional mid and fairway. The light-weight Blizzard plastic stuff works well as long as the wind isn't blowing hard. I'm primarily a TeeBird / TL3 guy, but I've found the Blizzard Beast to fly with kind of an S shaped path and the Blizzard Wraith to fly straight with a little fade at the end. So good to see a video aimed at seniors. I'm 65 and have a course across the street from my house so I get out quite a bit. Shipping fees into Canada makes it too costly to order from the US. Nick, thanks for putting this out. I'm upper 50s and started playing a few years ago to get out during Covid. I have since fallen in love with the game. My arm speed is "ok" and, like all of us, I continue to work on form. My early on "go to" discs were Diamond, Buzzz and Dagger all three of which I still have in my bag (in slightly heavier weights). Your advice about light discs is spot on. Remember the physics ... you can get faster arm speed with lighter discs so it's easier to throw higher speeds and get discs to fly as intended. From the Diamond I wanted a Jade but the store was out so I bought a Sapphire and have never looked back. My most used drivers/fairway drivers are all under 170g. THAT'S THE LESSON!
@NickArnette

Mike!! Great point!!! You get faster arm speed because the disc is lighter!! So simple. Thanks for sharing. Well said, my friend!! Makes perfect sense!! The Sapphire is awesome but I'm a little too slow to throw it right.

Glad I found your channel! I messed up my shoulder last summer feeling much better now but I am starting out with a slower arm speed until I can throw with more confidence. I am going on 67 this year and my absolute favourite disc is my Zone where I am deadly accurate using my forehand at about the 180ft range. My compliments on your selections the Buzz and the Glitch I bag both, I am currently working with discs under the 11 speed, mostly 9 and 8 speed. It's nice hearing from somebody our age talk discs! Keep it up!

Hey Richard!! Thanks for your comment!! I'm learning to throw a forehand. Do you find it's a little easier on the arms and shoulders than a backhand? I can throw almost as far with a forehand now but my throws are very inconsistent. There are some discs that I can throw better backhanded than forehand. I'm keeping most of my discs at 9-speed and under with just a couple exceptions. I need to try the Zone!!

@@NickArnette Before I pulled the ligaments in my shoulder I was always throwing forehand, I had great distance and used my backhand for shorter throws (I guess it was a baseball thing with me). Now that my shoulder is a lot better I am using my forehand for shots at the basket with my zone and relying more on my backhand (until I can bring my distance back up with my forehand). Right now I am about even throwing either way. Hopefully I can build them up at the same time.

@@richardcarloni8937 Richard, did you pull the ligaments in your shoulder throwing forehand in DG? I have no pain when I throw my forehands properly but afterward, I have soreness in the upper chest area near the clavicle. I'm hoping is just a muscle that needs to build up. I don't throw forehands hard to avoid injury.

@@NickArnette It started by throwing forehand with me trying to increase my distance and throwing wrong in the process. I went to my backhand so I was able to continue throwing last summer but then it started to affect me there too. Took off for the winter, took it easy on the old arm but it didn't help. With some physical therapy and three shots later, now I am able to play again.

Great recommendation on the Latitude Easy To Throw Line; The Diamond and Jade are both excellent discs for slower arms. One of my favorite discs is the Discraft Glide, which is a bit of a mix between mid and a fairway driver and is a very straight, point and shoot disc for those without a lot of power, with the Discraft Sting the next step up in stability.

Hey Nick good stuff from the heart. Don’t forget the impact that the wind can have on your discs. A lot of the discs you like when it’s windy are higher speed discs. You may be throwing into a headwind which is typically a time when you want to disc up to a faster disc. If it’s a tail wind you typically want to disc down. What a great ambassador to the sport. Well done sir!

Good stuff, Nick. 60 year old guy here, been playing disc golf since the 80's. I find the Axiom line works really well for my noodle arm. Axiom is owned by MVP Discs, and some of the discs can be found in both lines (example: Crave), but the Axiom discs are for mortal arms. I play with a younger friend who has a cannon, and he throws a lot of MVP, they fly really well for him, but my arm cannot get them to turn over and glide. I love the Crave, the Hex, the Rhythm, the Insanity, the Virus, the Inspire, and the Paradox, all great for older arms or anyone without a cannon who still wants to be able to toss a straight line for 150-250 feet. I also use the Axiom Envy putter right now, but I'm considering a switch to the Proxy, since it turns easier and fades less, which is good in a putter.

Great video! I totally agree; not enough good info out there for us "Grandmasters". I've been playing for 10 years and am turning 65. Had both knees replaced but absolutely love playing and get out there as often as I can. You gave a good choice for discs. What I would say is also look at and understand exactly what the flight mean. Use them as a guide; I go for a bit understable, high glide and a little fade at the end. Weight is a factor as well. The young guys can throw max weight but I'll leave it up t them to do it. After years of trial and error I came up with a decent combo for myself and they are all over the map. Drivers/fairways are Blizzard Beast 136g, Mamba 148g, Mamba 139g, Jade at 152g, Sidewinder at 153g, Envy at 154g. Mids are Mako 3, Foxbat and Buzz...all right around 160g. Putters are the Glitch for long putts, Ion for inside the circle. Some of my discs may overlap a little but all behave differently in the wind so I can adjust if need be.

Thanks for putting the content out there, Nick. I am 54 and play in the 50+AM group with my local club. I was a pandemic player so still relatively new. I definitely fall into the Low Arm Speed club as well. Some great discs you shared here! One thing I'll add about the base plastics. Yes, they are less expensive. In my experience, they beat in quite easily and the flight of some base plastics can change noticeably from one round to the next, possibly even within the same round. I was throwing Innova Valkyries in base (DX) plastic for a while. Those discs worked great for me but they'd all reach a point where it became a challenge to NOT have them turn over on me with every drive. Therefore I only used each disc for a relatively brief time before retiring it. Eventually I picked up a couple light weight Valkyries in Star or GStar plastic. I've had those around for a while now.

I had a Leopard in my starter pack. Loved it, and then someone told me to get a 165g Leopard in G-Star plastic. It was a completely different disc for me. I could not throw it well at all. Finally, after four years I can throw it. It's pretty good in the wind and it also flicks well. Whatever Leopard your son is throwing, if he's throwing it well, he should stick with it. Recently, I've been throwing a 149g Mamba a lot, and a 165g Crave as a mid-range. The Crave is really fast and it's great in the wind. The main thing is to have fun out there and throw what you can throw without too much effort to avoid injuries. I had a bad case of tennis elbow it took over two years to get rid of so I don't try to throw too hard or too much, anymore.

Hi Nick, You throw well, backhand and forehand,considering your age and you’ve only played for a couple of years. Yes, you are right about slower, more understable discs. But what older players need to concentrate on is fitness and flexibility. It is important to hit the gym twice a week, and probably more important to warm up before and stretch afterward. Before a round, dynamic stretching is essential to warm up. Do not static stretch before a round (unless, perhaps, you take Yoga). Static stretching does not generally warm muscles. Warm muscles, tendons, and ligaments are what you need to stretch, and this is what dynamic stretching does. The Disc Golf Strong site has good dynamic routines. Afterward don’t do dynamic stretching. This is the time for static stretching to stretch out those warm tired muscles, but don’t wait more than 10 minutes after you play, you’ll tighten up as you cool down! Another way to improve flexibility is to practice Yoga. Yoga helps with muscle tone and the improved flexibility is more important than weight lifting alone.

Thanks Nick, great content! I am a 65-year old as well playing for 2 years. Drivers: Innova Mamba and Innova Tern (12-speed). Fairways: Lattitude 64 Diamond and Westside Underworld (7-speed, I used to throw the Discmania Genius, it is also good for slow arm speeds). Midranges: Gateway Element (the Gateway Mystic is also good) and RPM Piwakawaka (this disc flies dead straight, but you can't get it in low weight). Three other comments; for a particular mold, you can get different plastics to get variations in stability. For instance, I have champion, star, and g-star mambas, all the same weight (around 160 grams) but they fly with more or less stability (tendency to fade left). The primary reason this is a good thing is because wind affects the flight of the discs and you can change discs for different wind and throw the disc the same way. Second, if you aren't sure what discs you can make fly, get a 3-speed, a 4-speed, a 5-speed, a 6-speed, etc. with the same weight and last 3 flight numbers (glide, turn, fade) and then throw them to see which you can make fly with your arm speed. When I first did this, I discovered I could throw a 4-speed fast enough to make it fly, but not a 5-speed. As my arm speed improved, I started throwing 5, 6, 7,..., all the way to 12 speed discs. Even so, everything 6 and over still needs to be understable (negative turn flight number, more negative as disc speed increases) for me to avoid a hyzer dump shot shape. Lastly, when you find what speed disc you are able to throw and make it fly, PRACTICE THROWING FLAT shots. Throwing flat is the beginning to understanding how discs fly and what discs you can throw.

Great video. I am 66 years old. Started playing 3 months ago. I throw Underworld and insanity drivers, claymore and mustang midranges, and I love the Ohm, nomad, and harp putters. Glad to see other old guys getting into the sport. 3 months in and I’m loving it.

I have an Insanity that's too heavy for me. I'm gonna' get one in fission plastic and see what I can do! Thanks for the putter recommendations!

Wow awesome video, I wish this was around years ago when I started. A friend got me started and handed me a Destroyer so I cracked up when I saw you show the same disc. Lightweight and type of plastic are the key for us seniors! I got to where I could throw over a couple hundred feet and tried Champion plastic and it was just a waste of money. The disc I seem to throw best is probably the Diamond and I have two that weigh in at 133g but unfortunately I cant seem to find them anymore. I have also found a few Innova DX discs that weighed under 120g which really helped my game. Those ultra lightweight discs are great for learning but now I throw too hard for that weight and they just crash. I have most of the discs that you mentioned but unfortunately I didn't have a guide like this when I started so I wasted hundreds of dollars on discs I couldn't throw and still cant. Thanks!

Thanks so much for your message. Yes, I too have wasted hundreds on discs I can't throw. Champion is one of the worst for me, but even worse than that is Blizzard Champion. Lightweight, but super overstable!! Lots of lightweight discs seem to be sold out, so the demand is there. The main thing for me is why work so hard to throw a heavier driver when a lighter one will do the same thing with less effort and strain on the body? Right?

Great video! I'm 65...been playing for about 8-9 years now... keeping in mind I am a fair weather golfer so I have played 1-2 times a month on average and sit out the full winter that really sets me back a bit. Still love the cheaper plastic...just seems like a better grip...keepin em light as well...go to discs are my 150 dx Wraith and Beast...always have a Mamba in my bag and do like my Valkyrie as well my Discraft X Heat...the Tern is also a decent choice for slower arms... usually putt with whatever's in my hand but do have Aviar and an old Birdie...wish there were more of us senior players...play by myself unless my son drops over...young guns are just too hard to keep up with 😎 Keep em flyin !!!

Glad you're still out there. There are some cool young guns out there that I'm sure would enjoy having you play with them! One of the things about disc golf is you can step away from it for a while and be back to where you were pretty quickly. I've played with guys who were actually even better when they came back after a long break,. Yeah, I heard about a guy who putts with his driver upside down!

I’m 56 and have been playing for about a year. My go to disc is the Innova tee bird. It’s a fairway driver but can definitely be used as a distance driver and midrange.

I think it's a great disc. I bought one but couldn't throw it very well. It was in Champion plastic, so maybe that's why...at least for me.

Your advice is spot on. I would also recommend a Hatchet (Westside Discs) very similar to the Jade with even more glide. You can get them in lower weights too.

I am 50 started playing bout year and a half ago. MVP has discs with fission microbubble technology. I have a 12 speed octane that only weighs 158 grams. They make a lot of different speeds with that teck. great discs

Absolutely great video Nick. I was playing with some friends yesterday and it was amazing watching this older couple who were in their 60's, maybe 70's even, play a round and they were doing amazing. I hope to be able to do the same when I get to that age. I would also like to say the Innova Valkyrie, West Side Discs Hatchet, and the Latitude 64 River have all been amazing discs for someone who can't get a ton of speed. Highly recommend them.

THANK YOU!!! I have been teaching mostly Seniors and Ams for 8 years and am shocked at how many have spent money on discs that just won't fly for them. Note that starting out with 'stable to understable' discs is almost as important as weight. Here are a few under-stable discs that will hold a line longer at slower speeds. Putters: Swan, Deputy, Ruby, Magic. Short Mids: Sol, Comet, Tangent, Panther, Theory. Fairway Drivers: Glide, Stratus, F7. Thanks again.

Great video for this 61 year-old beginner. Just a few ideas to toss out there. I experimented with a few different weights and found the heavier disks worked better for me, stopping me from over-throwing and saving me some frustration in the wind by staying a bit more true. I picked up the starter pack, but it included a Destroyer which was definitely too much disc for me. Looking forward to watching the rest of the videos and seeing more in the future.

Hello Nick, thanx for sharing ... I am 69, started playing, in 2020 ... then began to play tournaments, the following year 2021 ... really did well... rated 827 ... had one round rated at 924 ... but last year I had 6 surgerys, the last surgery was a cardiac surgery to plugva hole, in the wall of my heart ... unfortunately I had a DVT ( blood clot) that had formed during a vascular surgery on my leg, and the surgeon did not catch it in time (should have had me on anticoagulants) but did not because I look like I am in my 40s or 50s ... so had a stroke(part of the clot passed thru the hole in the heart wall) now DG has become part of my rehab ... really looking forward to competing again soon ... u put out some great info for beginning older players ... keep up the good work ... and enjoy this wonderful sport ... have fun

I played there today. I was the only one on the entire course. Probably because of the heat. I have played KH many many times and still do't have holes 2 and 4 dialed in. I have three pars in a row on 4 one time but then could never get the same throw from the same disc. Birdied hole 2 one time when I hadn't been playing that long, using a DX Sidewinder, I've never been close to a birdie on that hole ever since. I can usually par hole 2 but almost always bogie hole 4.
