Sam, a high school student asked me several questions for an independent study project on misinformation and propaganda. The questions are:
1. What are some common examples of misinformation/deception/propaganda online?
2. Can misinformation be categorized based on intent, content type, medium, subject matter, and source? If so, how can one identify them and their differences?
3. Deception and propaganda seem to be distinct from other types of misinformation. Please help me understand the differences, if they are different, past being intentionally manipulative.
4. What techniques and strategies are necessary/essential to create and disseminate misleading information?
5. What are some of the psychological and social factors that make individuals more susceptible to misinformation?
6. How and why is it difficult to change somebody’s mind after they have been exposed to misinformation?
7. How does repetition and distraction play a big role when it comes to people believing misinformation?
8. What is the easiest way to detect misinformation?
9. To combat misinformation, what strategies can be implemented for developing countermeasures to promote critical thinking?
10. What are some other resources or materials that could help my research?
The MAGIC Disinformation Kill Chain stands for:
MAKE the goal
ACQUIRE the target
GENERATE the disinformation
INFILTRATE the target (or INITIATE the operation)
CASCADE the amplification

Mis-information - false information shared with no intention of causing harm Dis-information - false information shared intentionally to cause harm Mal-information - true information shared intentionally to cause harm. Propaganda - information shared intentionally in misleading way to promote a specific point of view.

I don't think propaganda has to be misleading. In fact, the most effective propaganda is just truthful... if the truth is on your side. Anyways, I remember the VoA from back in the day making a big deal about being honest (most of the time at least) but also definitely being propaganda. Long term, becoming an actually trust-worthy source of news/info was great branding for the USA.

@@travcollier Just recently I 'discussed' how some Finnish Defence Forces educational films are propaganda. You'd be hard-pressed to find a single straight lie in them, but they aren't exactly the Nordic rendition of All Quiet on the Western Front. Basically, remember that we got the best weapons and training, forget that war is hard. On the other hand, there are other films that talk about war being hard. Propaganda is one part of military training, while education is still the main point.

I've found it easy to spot both everywhere. Good example, I'm a gun owner, thus I like to watch my firearms related content sometimes then the algorithm puts up some Firearms News channel video with a headline "The government is coming to take away your______ turning regular owners into felons!" And that's all they talk about how some law was passed to ban _________ put whatever firearm related in the blank, could be slings or magazines. And then I watch the intro minute or two and I go "that doesn't sound right" and look it up. And it's about a bill at a state level somewhere i don't live. The point of the video is to make you emotional and to support *insert lobbyist group here* to fight back. A lot of stuff out there to make you lock step with a group.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin 7 күн бұрын
I usually think of gun owners in segments. In my country the hunter segment is pretty big. Their idea of firearms is a tool you use situationally. They might not like people taking a firearm to the pub or keeping one in the car. The few collectors I know might own a lot of firearms, but they are closer to people who own a huge amount of mechanical watches or Barbie dolls or guitars. They think of historical importance of uniqueness or interesting engineering. Of course all these overlap, too.
@alexanderrobins7497

That is something I was hoping Ryan would bring up. If a source is telling you how to feel or they made their entire purpose "to own the _____", then they are likely complete trash. Even if I agree with someone's political view, tribalism and/or sniffing their own posh farts will drive me away. Granted, there is some value in understanding different polarizing view points on an issue to attempt to find some common ground or understand how to counter their propaganda effectively.

I agree with you and the singer campaign on the internet are out of control in both directions. So I tend to ask myself that something sounds like it's two out there to reality. That being said the second amendment is the second amendment for a reason and it's in our constitution for a reason I think any gun control at all anywhere is a chip out of the power of the people and the government being subservient to those people. A disarmed populace time and time again has proved that it leads to a government that doesn't feel like it needs to accurately reply to or explain itself to its people. So I guess be wary of the fundraiser fear campaign propaganda but remain aware of what your brothers in arms are fighting for. They wouldn't have to cherry pick manipulate and lie about the data in regards to firearms being such a threat if they were really that dangerous and made everybody murderers and psychopaths. Ensure there might be a hyperbolic campaign to raise funds for gun owners of America in response to some sledgehammer swing add our Wright's granite to Us by a higher power and reaffirmed in our constitution as a condition of allowing our government to exist but it's not always the first Hammer swing that causes the sidewalk to crumble but by the second third fourth swing it doesn't just crack it shatters. So although I agree with you that the fear campaigns are Non-Stop and there's nothing worse than having somebody tell you about some attack on your constitutional rights that may not affect you at this time an attack on one citizens

Though, I'd be happy to be proven wrong in that regard. McBeth's strength is having a pulpit to talk from and time to script, develop, and discuss the topic. That would reduce that amount of time candidates have to discuss their views, which is why you have the debate in the first place. The rampant narcissism of one candidate would not find Ryan's coolheaded debunking acceptable. Which would result in incessant complaining about how that candidate was treated unfairly.

Vlad Vexler tried to explain his ideas of current Russian propaganda. The goal is not necessarily to change what people believe, just make them flip out. There's eight different narratives being pushed out at the same time. Ukraine started the war, there was no war, USA started the war, Russia started the war but for good reason etc. People who do not believe in the democratic conversation itself want to flood the selected space until we are numb.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin 7 күн бұрын
I think current Russian depolitization play on that. You should be saturated and numb questioning the validity of all things until everything might as well be true. Russians can believe the state lies to their face, but also that every other alternative would do the same. So the only reasonable thing is apathy, inaction and hustle.

Think whatever you want. Just do it critically and with genuine intellectual honesty. The 5 Steps to Critical Thinking: What is critical thinking? In general, critical thinking refers to actively questioning statements rather than blindly accepting them. Critical thinking results in radical free will. 1. The critical thinker is flexible yet maintains an attitude of healthy skepticism. Critical thinkers are open to new information, ideas, and claims. They genuinely consider alternative explanations and possibilities. However, this open-mindedness is tempered by a healthy sense of skepticism (Hyman, 2007). The critical thinker consistently asks, “What evidence supports this claim?” 2. The critical thinker scrutinizes the evidence before drawing conclusions. Critical thinkers strive to weigh all the available evidence before arriving at conclusions. In evaluating evidence, critical thinkers distinguish between empirical evidence versus opinions based on feelings or personal experience. 3. The critical thinker can assume other perspectives. Critical thinkers are not imprisoned by their own points of view. Nor are they limited in their capacity to imagine life experiences and perspectives that are fundamentally different from their own. Rather, the critical thinker strives to understand and evaluate issues from many different angles. 4. The critical thinker is aware of biases and assumptions. In evaluating evidence and ideas, critical thinkers strive to identify the biases and assumptions that are inherent in any argument (Riggio & Halpern, 2006). Critical thinkers also try to identify and minimize the influence of their own biases. 5. The critical thinker engages in reflective thinking. Critical thinkers avoid knee-jerk responses. Instead, critical thinkers are reflective. Most complex issues are unlikely to have a simple solution. Therefore, critical thinkers resist the temptation to sidestep complexity by boiling an issue down to an either/or, yes/no kind of proposition. Instead, the critical thinker expects and accepts complexity (Halpern, 2007). Critical thinking is not a single skill, but rather a set of attitudes and thinking skills. As is true with any set of skills, you can get better at these skills with practice. In a nut shell, critical thinking is the active process of minimizing preconceptions and biases while evaluating evidence, determining the conclusions that can reasonably be drawn from evidence, and considering alternative explanations for research findings or other phenomena. CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS >Why might other people want to discourage you from critical thinking? >In what situations is it probably most difficult or challenging for you to exercise critical thinking skills? Why? > What can you do or say to encourage others to use critical thinking in evaluating questionable claims or assertions?
@TapOnX
@TapOnX 6 күн бұрын
That's nonsense. Everyone knows that to become a "critical thinker" you need to follow these steps: - Identify a "mainstream" belief. There may be multiple competing mainstream beliefs, so just pick one you dislike the most. Decide that it is fake because corporations government elites money. That's called skepticism - Now, browse through "alternate" sources. Pick one that validates some of your preexisting beliefs or just sounds exciting, or maybe it is being propagated by this cool, funny guy. Believe it - it is not mainstream, and since we have established that mainstream=lies this one must be true - be very careful about that part, since doubting the "alternate" take makes you mainstream shill sheeple npc soyjack. Though feel free to put your own little twist on it if you're feeling creative - after all, skepticism is all about you, and how you feel. Anyway, this part is called "doing your own research", and it makes you smarter than all those people who listen to "the experts", maybe even smarter than "the experts" themselves. - Since we have already established that the "alternate" take is the truth, make sure to defend yourself from the lies. Isolate yourself from all that may contradict your true belief. Remember - since it is all about you, your belief is part of your identity, and trying to disprove it is equivalent to stripping you from your agency, subjugating you to the dreaded "mainstream". So make it the hill you will die on. Congratulations. You are now a free-thinking skeptic.

I made a brief, (long for a KZbin comment) general list of several things I’ve started doing in the last few years to help sort through the various types of information. 1) Any information I hear that I’m unfamiliar with or unlearned on, I do some quick research on it before I repeat it or get set on maintaining as true or false. More so if the information triggers an emotional response from me, whether it be of disgust or jubilation. Sometimes there’s only so much information you can learn on a topic - especially if it’s fringe topics that often birth and flame mis/disinformation - but a lot of times, it’s not hard to quickly spot the inaccuracies or accuracies between what you’ve heard and what is reported. 2) In general, it’s good practice to get comfortable with being wrong and understanding the feelings that come with that. It’s often those emotions that come with realizing you’re wrong that prevent people - including myself in the past - to reevaluate prior beliefs. I say beliefs plural because sometimes it’s not uncommon for incorrect information to be multifaceted and layered in a way that means I have to deal with multiple things I was wrong about. 3) Being honest with myself about my biases and preferences is key also. Recognizing what I prefer to believe or what is more comfortable to believe has helped me preventatively spot how willing I am to accept or deny certain claims, which then allows me to better deal with reality if it doesn’t agree with my prior preferences. 4) Trying to understand the preferences of those I hear things from. Trying to recognize the biases of who/what I’m getting information from. There’s often nefarious actors doing work out of the public eye so they can be hard to spot or even impossible to trace without being in the intelligence industry, but essentially just doing a little bit of investigative tracing of the bread crumb trail can point you in the direction of what motivations might be behind certain claims. At the very least, assessing how a person or entity has portrayed specific topics in the past can highlight their a priori worldview, which helps you determine why they might be portraying information a specific way. 5) One of the biggest things that’s really helped me work through everything is the old saying “don’t attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance.” Once you recognize that most people are working from ignorance - at least in the general public - it gives you a level of patience and empathy that isn’t possible when you’re in the thick of emotions. 6) The patience part especially helps you navigate things beyond the immediate future; it helps in a social and traditional media climate that emphasizes being first over accuracy, a society that celebrates those that are first to be outraged over those that aren’t willing to inaccurately or misleadingly vilify. It’ll lead to you not holding “popular” beliefs as often but you’ll have a better grasp on reality. If you want accuracy more than popularity, it’s key to not fall into internet outrage circlejerks. If they end up being correct, then you can be outraged as well and you’ll have the proper information to help evaluate future scenarios. If they’re wrong, you won’t have to sort through the inaccurate information to determine what you need to correct, or worse, bury your head in the sand for the sake of maintaining an incorrect belief. It goes a long ways in preventing you from looking and feeling like a jackass. There’s more to be said about it but that’s just a few general things that have helped me navigate the climate of the world.

Love the ‘don’t give a shit I got chili on me’ shirt situation. As a middle-aged single Swiss man, I wholeheartedly concur! I’m a burnout from the mechanical engineering world after my PTSD finally caught up with me-along with a case of drug-induced hepatitis. Turns out, being a full-time working student with chronic pain wasn’t the best plan. Add to that smoking 4 to 6 pipes a day, drinking about eight espressos daily, and getting less than five hours of sleep for almost five years straight, all while working from 8 AM and finishing university at midnight. Long story short, I didn’t address my PTSD, and it wrecked me. Now, at 45, I’m back home in Switzerland, trying to reinvent myself after becoming officially disabled. I’ve been passionate about psychology since I was 16, and more recently, I’ve discovered the fascinating world of social psychology. I'm attending classes at the local university and I absolutely love it! Channels like yours offer great insight into how social psychology shapes our world in general and moreover, how disinformation works and interferes with our hearts and minds, and I really appreciate that. I think his point in the video is that people often make tribally motivated assumptions that aren't based in a clear understanding of actual history, but rather tribal politics. Like a lot of contemporary Democrats work under an assumption that the Democrat Party is somehow annointed to be the arbiters of racial equality because they currently embrace a social justice platform without understanding that historically, Democrats were the party of slavery, the KKK and Jim Crow. It also ignores the fact that a significant subset of Republicans still view the GOP as the party of Lincoln and continue to have major qualms with Democrats' history of oppression. My guess is that most of the Republican "Never Trumpers" who see him as a fundamentally terrible candidate and human being, and who are either going to vote for Harris or a third party candidate, would fall into the "party of Lincoln" camp. They have the hindsight of history to know that Trump is not who they want to represent their party on the national stage.

At some point around the time that I finished high school and before I got drafted I realized I was impressed by people that knew at least a little about wider variety of topics than people are experts on one subject. And I think it serve me well. And I’m always surprised by people seem quite satisfied to completely ignorant about fixing things around their house, car, or computer. Many baby boomers LIKE to say I don’t know anything about computers. I worked hard to hang onto things I’ve learned that never get used anymore. Like taking down an M-14 or M-16. Keep your mind open to new info. You never know where you might need it again.

Critical question, if you discredit a political attack with a literal factcheck without mentioning similar behavior by the same group, could that be Propaganda? Example: you could say: Project 2025 does not say: stop teaching about slavery. Or you could follow it up with: there are certain conservative groups who are fighting against CRT being thought in school, these points in P2025 could make that easier, but that is a far cry from the statement made.

The average US schools curriculum doesn't teach critical thinking skills. Not until you get up into the college level humanities. Not public schools, not a bunch of religious private schools. In a democracy it seemed crazy that we don't teach people how to identify scams, grifts, misleading rhetoric. But then I realized, the marketplace needs millions of suckers and marks. The politicians, the churches, the corporations, love magical thinkers, emotional thinkers. I was on one side of the aisle. I started studying rhetoric, logic, propaganda history and techniques to make persuasive arguments for what I believed in my bones. Then I realized my political party and all the channels i was following were the most egregious offenders. Nothing but mirroring, strings of logical fallacies, half truths and statistics laid out on a board, a red string woven through to invent a narrative out of whole cloth. Then searching any point, for actual data, because facts not feelings, I found myself slowly changing my vote. 20+ years on one side and then the circus came to town.

The only way to get someone to leave their "team" is to trick them into reading/watching material from "the other side" and eventually start to question who is telling the truth. Step two is to get them to actually go find the truth (i.e. read the actual bill that was submitted, read the court transcripts, etc). Boy that's a lot of "air quotes" I'm typing. A note on cluster munitions, they are often used in areas that are already heavily mined, meaning that even though they might not all explode, there is still going to be far fewer mines remaining in that patch where the cluster munition was used than there were before hand, even if a handful of the cluster munitions fail to explode. Like I'd personally prefer exploding far more mines than I replace them with, and regardless to the cluster munition being used a demining program is going to be needed for that area either way. This is war people, not a game of tag.

Gustavl3107 is correct. The Dixiecrat Republicans on the State Board of Education and the Texas Schools Curriculum Committee, not to mention the Texas Textbook Committee are steadily trying to just sorta smear out the egregiousness of slavery. It may be true that most slave owners were not like the Hollywood film makers horror stories, but the owned could not get away if they were mistreated, and there is the sin. Can we construct a different name for these latter-day "republicans?" Like maybe Fascisto-Republicans, or Twenty-first Century Republicans. Or maybe Repugnicans. How does he miss that? This is like middle school level American history. You only need to look up Lincoln's quotes about labor -- he believed that there would not be businessmen (or "capital" in his words) without labor. So Abraham Lincoln believed that the needs of the laborers precede the needs of the business people. Abraham Lincoln was the prototypical RINO, if we're gonna use modern terms. It should also be noted that the Republican Party was 5 years old when Lincoln ran for President. If was younger than Trump's political career today. This was a major oversight of misleading information, to say that Republicans, as in the GOP of today, are of the same ideology as the Republicans of Lincoln's time.

I know a lot of stuff, but it's not possible to know everything or remember all things and keep up with the exponential advances in the evidence or knowledge since I learned it as little as a year ago. The older I get, the more I'm very confident, stating :"I don't know" and have become less certain about what I think I know. We have so many tools now (google, AI expert websites) that literally anyone can quickly fact-check or do research from multiple independent sources on any given topic in seconds. Knowing how to ask good questions is the first step. It amazes me that there is still so much misinformation out there. I think it's important to call people out on misinformation, but give the party the opportunity to set the record straight publically so we can clearly see their misinformation is a genuine error versus a deliberate act.

So, we have "misinformation" where people get things wrong by accident. And "disinformation" where people intentionally deceive people to reach a wrong conclusion. However, I think there is a third concept - where people selectively cherry pick accurate information, but missing counterpoints and the wider context, to influence people towards a particular opinion. Is there a particular term for this?

That is still a form of disinformation, because it is intentional misuse of data meant to persuade others toward your intended viewpoint.

Wouldn’t that be disinformation…you’re purposely omitting details to lead to a particular narrative in order to sway opinion.

i wanna watch this in the train, but feel kinda ashmed when someone sees me watch you rambling for half an hour when you're ...dressed like that. Alcohol and cigar don't help. Still thanks for free video

Why would any care that you are watching him regardless of what he is wearing, drinking, or smoking? Strange thing to be worried about imo

Australia/ Spot on Ryan ! I have always followed the 'rule' of learn everything you can about everything, as being born into a fundamentalist cult, escaping at 18- I knew I had to learn a lot and fast. So- I think my beginning was actually a benefit-as I went for everything I could and grew to be a very strong (& free) and successful person. And I can spot BS a mile away. I love your work. 😘🙃

It's hard to take you credibly when you spew the same propaganda that the modern GOP does about being the "Party of Lincoln." As if the party ideologies didn't flip in the 60's. JFC Ryan...

Ryan routinely gets facts like this wrong in his videos. It really casts doubt on his credibility.
