Using emergency family alerts for free texting is so funny
@CaptainApathetic Жыл бұрын
What's even funnier is that SMS basically uses no extra resources bc it piggybacks off other signals so limiting the number of texts was solely for profit.
@aribantala Жыл бұрын
I remember back when in my place, despite SMS texting was so cheap (if I remember correctly, it was like USD 0.1 cent per character), Network providers still sold "data plan" for Texting, which charges you, like, 10 cents per message... Not per character And I still kinda don't get it even today lol, an SMS was like, 250-300 characters max, and when we use all of that character, that's 25 cents to 30 cents per text... That's a long wall of text even for me. I use SMS to say something like "Meet me at McD by the park in 10" or something like that, which is 3 cents at most lol

I remember Disney Mobile, I went to Disneyland in 2006, it was being heavily advertised and promoted to family travelers! I thought their marketing was terrible, because they missed the opportunity of special features and themes like Pirates of the Caribbean, Lilo and Stitch, and Cars to other providers like T Mobile and Cingular at that time. They could’ve sponsored their Disney branded phones to major carriers, instead of this walled garden cell phone service!

I feel like Disney Mobile, as a concept anyway, was way ahead of its time. I think, had they launched it in this modern era, it might have fared better, due to the high degree of customizability Android provides these days. They could slap their own skin on it and even have the phone come with their own apps pre installed such as Disney+ and DisneyNow. Make it a T-Mobile MVNO (which now has Sprint spectrum as well) and they could have even offered it to unlocked third party phones, too, similar to other GSM MVNOs. Slap in a few Disney exclusive perks such as discounted Disney+ or other perks like that and it could have probably fared really well. A bestselling service? Unlikely even then, but it'd probably have done better than it did way back when by comparison lol.

"Priority" text messages weren't just a Disney mobile thing, I think they were called "urgent" messages by other providers and either hidden in the settings or not a well known feature. I couldn't find much about them online from a quick search but I believe the delivery process was actually slightly different for priority sms messages. I remember receiving "urgent" texts as late as 2010 taking advantage of that loophole
@YS_Production Жыл бұрын
Wanted to say I never heard of them up here in central europe, but then I remembered - back when online "SMS gateways" were a thing, there was an option to choose from 3 types of messages, - standard, "message on screen" and one more. I think the "message on screen" would be the priority message. I remember I tried it and it worked. Later on the options to choose the message type disappeared. These gateways were actually operated by the respective network providers (and allowed you to send messages to those providers only) - let me know if such a thing existed in other part of the world.

As a side note, both phones are based on Qualcomm's SoCs and have the same underlying system from Qualcomm. Manufacturers had a say in some security restrictions and UI. And the carrier had its say in distribution system, specific features and UI. Despite being a CDMA carrier, Sprint did not choose Qualcomm's BREW distribution system with native BREW apps, but decided to go with the rest of the world and used Java2ME. So this probably migrated to Disney Mobile. I wonder if you can side-load BREW or J2me apps, or it is completely locked in this regard. The Samsung phone featured here had a Sprint counterpart with Sprint UI - Samsung SPH-M300.

These Disney phones were *clearly* aimed at control freak helicopter parents with trust issues, because while I get sane parental controls like spending allowance limits and restricting access to certain websites, the amount of downright Orwellian BS on these phones is just ridiculous. Really, a limit on how many pictures you're allowed to take on your own device? That's like something North Korea would do. But then again this is Disney were talking about so blending together parental surveillance stalker devices with kitschy animated novelty is par for the course for them. The funny thing is that I get Disney+ for free through my mobile plan. I guess nothing really changes after all lol.

I definitely see the harm from controlling parents using these systems, but I imagine Disney was also aiming for parents who were unfamiliar with then-rapidly -changing cell phone technology. If you don’t really understand what your kid could do with a cell phone, you might hesitate to let them have one, until a brand you know like Disney comes along with something like this. But unfortunately, it seems like the combination of helicopter parents and mildly technophobic parents turned out to be too small of a market for these, lol
