When I was younger (before the Lion King was put into the vault), my parents didnt want me to see it because they thought I would get nightmares. A few years later, they decided I could see it, only to discover the vault system. As a result, after 12 years of waiting... I saw the Lion King for the first time a few days ago. I'm obsessed.
@staggmovie6 жыл бұрын
Your parents might have been right not letting you see the movie until you were older, even though the movie is rated G, when you think about it, Simba's uncle Scar arranges a stampede to happen, and in the mist of the stampede happening, he kills Simba's dad, and then frames him for it, and tricks Simba into thinking he killed his own father. It is hard to say if it would have given you nightmares when you were younger, but it might have.

@scaper86 жыл бұрын
It's lost some of its power, but not totally. You can't buy _legal, new_ copies (even digital copies) of vaulted films. Yes, piracy and resale will always be an option, but A) some people never buy used nor pirate, and B) it will be a long time before either of those is a larger market than legal and new.
@grayson46146 жыл бұрын
The vault was more effective then because not only was internet not a thing but they used VHS tapes which meant that the more people used it the more it got torn up and stop working so they would have to buy another copy when it came back on sale

When I was a kid I never got to see The Lion King because of the Disney Vault. I only knew the sequel and I loved it so much that every year when Christmas came I hoped that it would be my present from Santa. When I was old enough to understand the Vault system (and that there is no Santa) it then sparked a huge passion for collecting all Disney films on DVD and every year for Christmas I would get whatever film was out of the vault and we would watch it on Christmas Eve. And when the Lion King finally was out of the vault, my parents remember that it was my most wanted film and got me the special edition in a wooden box with all 3 films. The tradition of watching one Disney film on Christmas stuck by the way, even though now it is not limited to vault films anymore. I am 22 now and still my mother and I watch a Disney film every year on Christmas. So in hindsight I am not sure whether I like or hate the Disney Vault :D

I think its more about supply at this point. Since they have have re-releases instead of constantly producing them, it keeps the market from not being over flooded with unsold copies. I assume that this strategy works in this day an age because while they may produce the move for 6 months, it may take 7-10 years for that stock to be depleted. And thus bringing it it of the vault again, getting people hype to get their hands on the movie, and sell that without having to keep production running constantly. (You also have to think about all the editions that are being sold but not every edition is available, like Snow White for example, its my mother's fave princess, so she gets the newest edition each time it comes out because she collects them all. Many of the editions she has they do not sell anymore, its typically the latest unvaulting of it that is in-stock, not the years prior.) Sorry this was a long comment. haha
@anthonydove86467 жыл бұрын
That is true but you have to be careful depending on where you live. I live in the Southeastern US and I wanted Lady and the Tramp last year. I bought it off Amazon but when it arrived it wouldn't play on any of my video players (PS3, DVD player, etc.). The reason for that was because it was a region 2 DVD but the US is in region 1. I had to send it back and I immediately knew it had something to do with the vault.

+Farayd www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=disney+platinum+edition There are an ass load available in platinum edition as well. And the new fancy shit is Disney Diamond edition. And those are mostly for sale too. +Anthony Dove The region system is worldwide and up the studios to utilize, it is not Disney specific. Perhaps consider buying a multi region DVD player, and try to avoid imported DVD's.

The vault is also something that will probably end up falling apart completely. A lot of the vaulted movies were still relatively easy to acquire at used video/dvd sales and now the vault movies are also being used by people who buy them up and scalp people on eBay with them

In retrospect it makes total sense why I never watched any classic Disney movies at home growing up. Neither of my parents would have put up with this release strategy just to get movies I never showed interest in.

I partially agree with this, but that's really not the whole picture on the vault. You have to go way back to the days where Disney was running its own channels - not these crappy kids channels, but channels that featured their movies, their shows, their documentaries and their made-for-TV movies. The vault isn't just the top movies being hidden and brought back. In fact, that's barely the whole picture. Those movies aren't really lost to the vault like many other awesome old shows and movies are. While the vault is nowadays used to keep some big titles hidden to score on cash, it also did something else: it hid from the public years and years of much older shows and movies, things like "A Light in the Forest". Many of these old shows and movies will never be released again, which is why you'll see them on online marketplaces running at such high prices. If you were lucky enough to have a parent who recorded many of these videos onto tapes off of the TV channels in which they ran, you're one of the few. Many vault movies are simply vaulted because nobody other than superfans would watch them these days. It wouldn't make Disney all that much money and would not be worth making the copies. The vault might be a "place" for Disney to hide their famous titles a few years to score on cash, but it's really just a graveyard for hundreds and hundreds of different shows and movies that new Disney knows won't make money by their target mass audience. I was lucky enough to have a dad who is a huge fan of Disney and used to record many of these movies and shows and buy them when they came out during his younger years. From what I've seen, most people never even learn about all of these abandoned, locked away movies, which is quite a shame because while some are about what you'd expect from made-for-TV movies, some are true gems. If you're a superfan of older Disney works, I seriously recommend joining their movie club. It costs money but if you're looking for some of their vaulted movies it's the only place you can get quite a few of them cheap. People also tend to upload some of the vaulted shows and movies on KZbin under weird names, so be sure to check around for them and download the ones you find! Ebay is more of a last resort area, as the prices are insane, but if there's a movie you just can't find that's far too deep in the vault, you may want to check there. Some movies are entirely gone to the vault, but it's always good to poke around! Have fun vaulting! :-D

It really is underrated isn't it? I love the Mad Hatter, my favorite character in the movie. Peter Pan is great as well, I used to have the book of Peter Pan. Don't think I have the book any more unfortunately. I remember that I would dream of going into Alice in Wonderland movie and Peter Pan movie, lol.

Even as far as physical copies go, I just checked, the Lion King is on Amazon in Blu Ray and DVD. I think retailers smooth out the spikes between two releases, in such a way that yes, you can buy any movie at any time, only the rarest movies can't be found on the internet.

I had an obsession a few years ago with buying all of the movies on DVD. They had al little number on the spine so I wanted a complete collection. I got most of them over the next year but I think I gave up before they re-released sleeping beauty. Also there's some that I really wasn't fussed about. lots of early 2000's ones that are kinda rubbish, and a few obscure ones. I do however have a complete Pixar collection and all the Disney movies I ever want to watch. X

I don't think that 'the vault' applies to my nation, at this very moment I could go to ASDA (a British super-market chain owned by Walmart) and purchase around 20 Disney classics - including Snow White and the Lion King - at about £7 each - or $9.05.

I remember my grandma saying that she bought the VHS tapes for us when they came out so that we (her grandchildren) could watch them one day, since DVD’s were unheard of back then. She was surprised when we told here how much they could be worth. I know she had Snow White and The Little Mermaid, and I think she had the Lion King too.
